  • In the present study, a searching technique for critical slip surface in two dimensional slope stability analysis is proposed. The failure surface generation and analysis has been usually limited to simple geometric shapes. However, more random surfaces need to be examined for some particular ground conditions. For this purpose, random searching technique is developed using genetic algorithm. The generalized limit equilibrium method is employed as the method of stability analysis. Using this technique, the factor of safety is compared with the result by using simplified Bishop's method. In addition, the convergent trend of fitness value is analyzed.

  • The slope stability analysis of Carsington dam is performed, considering the effects of pore water pressure, slip surface configuration, lateral stress and various shear strengths. Without yellow clay layer, the Bowles' and STABR programs were used to find the circular slip surface which has the maximum safety factor. At last using the Morgenstern-Price method, the effects of rainfall and strength of yellow clay were mainly considered in the back analyses after failure. It was found that (1) the potential slip was not predicted in the analysis based on the modified Bishop method without considering the yellow clay layer, and (2) the crllapse of dam had been occurred according to the critical shear strength of the yellow clay and pore water pressure increase.

  • The friction and wear of tire determined by frictional behavior of tire tread that translate driving force, cornering force and braking force between automobile and road as a result of frictional behavior of each tread block. The tire tread block is representative case of rubber block doing frictional behavior. In this paper, frictional behavior of rubber block under compressive force and shear force was analytically obtained by using slip starting position parameter instead of friction coefficient which is uncertain to express exact value between rubber and other surfaces yet. And local coefficients of friction were calculated as a function of compressive force, shear force, shear modulus of rubber, shape factor and slip starting position.

  • Effect of nitriding on fatigue crack initiation and growth rate has been studied in Ni-Cr-Mo steel. Specimens were nitrided at $860^{\circ}C$ for 15 hr. The fatigue limit of nitrided specimens were superior to those ofannea1ed($860^{\circ}C$, 15 hr) specimens. Based on detailed observations of slip band and micro crack initiation, it is concluded that the excellent fatigue limit of nitrided specimens is attributed to improved slip initiation resistance by nitriding. The characteristic of fatigue crack growth rate of nitrided specimens was investigated by comparing with those of annealed specimens. It was found that the crack growth rate was markedly decreased and the threshold stress intensity factor range was improved by nitriding. It is concluded that the excellent fatigue limit of nitrided specimens is also attributed to improved fatigue crack growth rate and threshold stress intensity factor range by nitriding.

  • The friction and wear behavior of short carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone was studied experimentally under dry sliding conditions against SCM440(AISI 4140) disks with a different surface roughness and hardness at the low sliding speeds and the high pressures on a pin-on-disk apparatus. Under the low disk surface roughness value the earsplitting noise and stick-slip were occurred. The increased adhesion friction and wear factor with stick-slip made the friction and wear behavior worse. Under the high disk surface hardness the break and falling-off of carbon fibers were accelerated. The carbon fibers fallen off from the matrix were ground into powder between two wear surfaces and this phenomenon caused a abrasive friction and wear factor to increase. So the friction and wear behavior became worse. With the transfer film made of wear particles formed on a disk, the carbon powder film formed on a pin lowered a friction coefficient.

  • The mean-line method using empirical models is the most practical method of predicting off-design performance. To gain insight into the empirical models, the influence of empirical models on the performance prediction results is investigated. We found that, in the two-zone model, the secondary flow mass fraction has a considerable effect at high mass flow-rates on the performance prediction curves. In the TEIS model, the first element changes the slope of the performance curves as well as the stable operating range. The second element makes the performance curves move up and down as it increases or decreases. It is also discovered that the slip factor affects pressure ratio, but it has little effect on efficiency. Finally, this study reveals that the skin friction coefficient has significant effect on both the pressure ratio curve and the efficiency curve. These results show the limitations of the present empirical models, and more resonable empirical models are reeded.

  • The hydraulic LSD which uses the principle of gear pump is packed with viscous oil in tight container. When a slip occurs on one wheel, the hydraulic LSD generates torque caused by high oil pressure in the container. In this study, two dimensional(2-D) side pinion gear model was developed for hydraulic LSD. Using that model the flow analysis was conducted to preestimate pressure distributions of the side pinion gear according to the variations in the design factors such as oil viscosity, gear gap and rpm. Then, applying the obtained pressure distributions on the side pinion gear, finite element analysis was conducted to evaluate the torque characteristics. From the analysis results, the torque characteristics according to the design factor variations were evaluated.

  • Temperature was considered to estimate the minimum detectable absorption coefficient of aerosol particles from photothermal spectroscopy. Light energy absorbed by subsequent emission from the aerosol results in the heating of the aerosol sample and consequently causes a temperature change as well as changes in thermodynamic parameters of the sample. This thermal effect is the basis of photothermal spectroscopy. Photothermal spectroscopy has several types of techniques depending on how the photothermal effects are detected. Photothermal interferometry traces the photothermal effect, refractive index, using an interferometer. Photoacoustic spectroscopy detects the photothermal effect, sound wave, using a microphone. In this study, it is suggested that the detection limit for photothermal spectroscopy can be influenced by the introduction of a slip correction factor when the light absorption is determined in a high temperature environment. The minimum detectable absorption coefficient depends on the density, the specific heat and the temperature, which are thermodynamic properties. Without considering the slip correction, when the temperature of the environment is 400 K, the minimum detectable absorption coefficient for photothermal interferometry increases approximately 0.3% compared to the case of 300 K. The minimum detectable absorption coefficient for photoacoustic spectroscopy decreases only 0.2% compared to the case of 300 K. Photothermal interferometry differs only 0.5% point from photoacoustic spectroscopy. Thus, it is believed that photothermal interferometry is reliably comparable to photoacoustic spectroscopy under 400 K.
