Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the differences of sleep quality, fatigue and depression between school lessons and clinical practicum term in nursing students. Methods: This study was conducted through a survey on 84 $4^{th}$ grade nursing students. Data collection was conducted from April to June, 2015. Participants completed a questionnaire assessing sleep quality, fatigue and depression. Data were analyzed by the SPSS/WIN 21.0 using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, ANOVAs, Pearson's correlations and multiple regression. Results: The mean scores of fatigue and depression during the school lesson were significantly high compared to those of the clinical practicum. On the contrary, the score of sleep quality did not showed difference. Sleep quality showed negative correlations with fatigue and depression respectively, and fatigue showed positive correlation with depression. Subjective health status was the influential factor predicting fatigue and depression after school lessons, and subjective health status and major satisfaction were the influential factors predicting fatigue and depression after clinical practicum term. Conclusions: Nursing students showed different characteristics between school lessons and clinical practicum term. Thus, it is essential to identify physical and psychological problems and related factors respectively, then to devise appropriate programs to improve nursing curriculums.
Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of auriculotherapy on sleep disorders in the elderly. Methods: The study was a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group pre-post post-test. The participants were 43 elderly, members of community senior centers, experimental group were 23 elderly, and control group were 20 elderly. For the experimental group, small seeds (semen vaccaria) were applied to five locations of both auricular skin surfaces: shen men, heart, anterior lobe, occiput, and spleen of posterior surface. The seeds were applied every week, and remained in surfaces for 5 days. The procedure were repeated 4 times. The control group was not treated. The collected data were statistically processed using SPSS 12.0 version and the data was analyzed for descriptive statistics and t-test. Results: The experimental group had a greater improvement in sleep scale score (t=-4.717, p<.001) and sleep satisfaction score (t=-6.095, p<.001) as compared to the control group. Conclusions: Auriculotherapy by small seeds (semen vaccaria) is effective in allaying sleep disorders in the elderly. The results may be useful to community health nurses.
This study evaluated the effects of latex mattresses on sleep quality and comfort. The participants were 11 healthy adults (five males, six females, mean age 37.7 years, mean height 167.8 cm, and mean weight 67.0 kg) without severe insomnia or other disease that could affect sleep, examined by a clinician. In their personal living space, participants slept on a spring mattress for 7 days, with their sleep registered using a wearable device (Fitbit), a sleep log, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and a satisfaction survey. The mattresses were then replaced with latex mattresses, which were used for 14 days. As a result, sleep time increased by 62.9 min on weekdays and 53.2 min on weekends after using the latex mattress, and a significant decrease, of 3.8, as seen on the ISI. As measured by the PSQI, the poor sleepers decreased from 10 to 7, but this was not statistically significant, and in the satisfaction survey, the comfort of the low back, neck, and shoulders was significantly increased. This suggests that changes to latex mattresses may positively affect objective and subjective sleep quality.
Purpose: Korean adolescents have severe nighttime sleep deprivation and daytime sleepiness because of their competitive educational environment. However, daytime sleep patterns and sleepiness have never been studied using age-specific methods, such as the pediatric daytime sleepiness scale (PDSS). We surveyed the daytime sleepiness of Korean adolescents using a Korean translation of the PDSS. Methods: We distributed the 27-item questionnaire, including the PDSS and questions related to sleep pattern, sleep satisfaction, and emotional state, to 3,370 students in grades 5-12. Results: The amount of nighttime sleep decreased significantly with increasing age. During weekday nights, $5-6^{th}$ graders slept for $7.95{\pm}1.05h$, $7-9^{th}$ graders for $7.57{\pm}1.05h$, and $10-12^{th}$ graders for $5.78{\pm}1.13h$. However, the total amounts of combined daytime and nighttime sleep during weekdays were somewhat greater, $8.15{\pm}1.12h$ for $5-6^{th}$ graders, $8.17{\pm}1.20h$ for $7-9^{th}$ graders, and $6.87{\pm}1.40h$ for $10-12^{th}$ graders. PDSS scores increased with age, $11.89{\pm}5.56$ for $5-6^{th}$ graders, $16.57{\pm}5.57$ for $7-9^{th}$ graders, and $17.71{\pm}5.24$ for $10-12^{th}$ graders. Higher PDSS scores were positively correlated with poor school performance and emotional instability. Conclusion: Korean teenagers sleep to an unusual extent during the day because of nighttime sleep deprivation. This negatively affects school performance and emotional stability. A Korean translation of the PDSS was effective in evaluating the severity of daytime sleepiness and assessing the emotional state and school performance of Korean teenagers.

Purpose : This descriptive research study aimed to investigate the relationship among academic self-efficacy, sleep quality, and quality of life(QoL) and to identify the factors that affect quality of life(QoL) in nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method : A total of 214 nursing students from three South Korean colleges were included in the study. Collected data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Independent t-test and one-way analysis of variance were used to analyze the differences in academic self-efficacy, sleep quality, and quality of life(QoL) according to general characteristics. In addition, post-hoc Scheffè test and Pearson's correlation coefficient were used to examine the relationship among the three parameters. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify influential factors on the nursing students' quality of life(QoL). Results : The average academic self-efficacy, sleep quality, and quality of life(QoL) scores were 3.15±0.27, 32.28±7.54, and 81.12±13.11, respectively. Quality of life(QoL) positively correlated with academic self-efficacy but negatively correlated with sleep quality. Academic self-efficacy negatively correlated with sleep quality. Sleep quality, satisfaction with major, sex, average income, and academic self-efficacy influenced quality of life(QoL), whose explanatory power was 34.9 %. Conclusion : Sleep quality was the most influential factor of quality of life(QoL). However, further studies to validate our findings and studies focusing on developing intervention programs to improve nursing students' sleep quality and quality of life(QoL) are warranted.
Objectives:Assessment of sleep disturbance is an essential part of the diagnostic criteria used for several psychiatric disorders. Change in sleep patterns over time may indicate response to treatment. In clinical practice, sleep is usually evaluated subjectively by patient self-report. This study was aimed to compare subjective sleep assessment with objective sleep measurement by actigraphy in psychiatric inpatients. Methods:A total of 32 psychiatric inpatients were studied. Patients were asked to wear a wrist actigraphy for three consecutive days and nights and to fill out a sleep log each morning. The severity of depression and anxiety was evaluated according to Beck Depression Inventory and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory on the first day of the study. The subjective level of satisfaction with quality of sleep was also evaluated according to visual analog scale. Nurses assessed sleep at one hour interval between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM for three consecutive nights. Results:There was statistically significant difference of sleep latency between patient's sleep log and acti-graphic measurement. Nursing reports were more consistent with actigraphic measurement than sleep log. Interestingly, subjectively poor sleepers show no significant difference in sleep parameters compared with those of good sleepers. Subjectively poor sleepers report longer sleep latency than that of actigraphic assessment. The discrepancy between subjective and objective assessment of sleep latency was significantly correlated with scores of Beck Depression Inventory and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Conclusion:These results show that there are discrepancies between subjective and objective assessment of sleep. The discrepancy of sleep assessment could be influenced by severe depression and anxiety. Especially objective sleep measurement is needed to assess sleep in psychiatric inpatients with severe depression or anxiety and the subjectively poor sleepers for more reliable measurements.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influencing factors on postpartum fatigue in the parturient women. Methods: The data were collected from July to September, 2006 using self-report questionnaires. The sample was 143 healthy parturient women who visited the outpatient clinic at 2 hospitals for a routine follow up after childbirth. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 12.0 Win program. Results: There were significant differences in the postpartum fatigue by age, religion, sleep hour, and complaint of perceived health problem. The postpartum fatigue were significantly correlated with infant care stress(p<0.001), sleep satisfaction(p<0.001), and feeding difficulty(p=0.016). The multiple regression analysis showed that the postpartum fatigue were significantly predicted by the infant care stress, sleep satisfaction and complaint of perceived health problem. These variables explained 31.8% of the variance of postpartum fatigue. The infant care stress was the main predictor of postpartum fatigue. Conclusions: It could be concluded that the nursing intervention for reducing the infant care stress should be developed to manage the postpartum fatigue for parturient women. Prospective studies are needed to be conducted to verify the causal relationship between infant care stress and postpartum fatigue.
Purpose: This study examined the influencing factors on antenatal depression among pregnant women. Methods: This was a cross sectional descriptive study with 255 pregnant women who visited a general hospital in a metropolitan city for their regularly scheduled check-up. Measurement tools employed were the Korean version of Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the food habits, and the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Socio-demographic variables and the status of high risk pregnancy were identified. Influencing factors on antenatal depression were identified using a stepwise multiple regression analysis. Results: The mean score of antenatal depression was $7.2{\pm}5.0$; 18.4% with mild depression, 5.9% had moderate depression, with 0.8% identified with severe depression on BDI scale. Influencing factors on antenatal depression accounted for 47.8% of the total variance which consisted of quality of sleep, marital satisfaction, food habits, gestation periods, sexual satisfaction, high risk pregnancy, and age. Conclusion: Findings show that antenatal depression should be monitored on a regular basis during early pregnancy and in high risk pregnancy if possible, and quality of sleep and food habits should be incorporated in the management of antenatal depression.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the sleep quality and depression, and relationship between sleep quality and depression of nursing students. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted. The subjects were 268 nursing students from a University. Data were collected on September, 2012 by using a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 19.0 program. Results: The mean score of sleep quality was 6.65, among the students, 86.6% had sleep problem. The mean score of depression was 16.89, 25.4% of the students had mild depression, and 20.5% had severe depression. Sleep quality showed no significant differences, meanwhile depression showed significant differences according to the school year, satisfaction level with nursing major and university. There was a significant relationship between sleep quality and depression. Conclusions: These results suggest that some of the nursing students have sleep problem and depression. Therefore, it is needed to develop various nursing intervention strategies to improve physical, psychological health of the nursing students.
If there are problems for us to sleep, we are faced with fatigue and dizziness in the day. Snoring and OSAS (obstructive sleep apnea syndrome) during sleeping are the main cause of sleep disorder. Treatments through surgical method and sleep splint can be performed to treat snoring and OSAS. Relapse of snoring and OSAS is common after treatment by surgical method. But, Recently sleep splint is frequently applied to treat snoring and OSAS with surgical treatment, because it is convenient and conservative. Sleep splint treat snoring and OSAS by ensuring airway through nose. As first step of fabrication occlusal bite is gained at a point that patient get feeling of increased nasal breathing in supined position, and next, the bite is transfered to sleep splint. This study surveyed the effect of sleep splint by questionnaire to the out-patients (the Dept. of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Chonbuk National University Hospital) weared sleep splint and their partners, secondarily measured airflow through nose by aerophone II after wearing sleep splint and finally evaluated the effect of treatment of snoring and OSAS by sleep splint. The obtained result were as follows; 1. Though 'sleep splint' couldn't eliminate fundamental problems of snoring, it could improve the symptoms when patients were selected could using the 'Nakagawa's respiration method'. 2. Patients who used the sleep splint could breathe stably when patients are sleeping stably. Wearing a 'sleep splint' improved airflow by expanding the upper airway. 3. Even though sleep splint can be made with variable materials, the patients expressed the most satisfaction on the splint with '0.75mm hard shell'. 4. The 'Herbst' may allows the mandible to move the TMJ to relax. Nevertheless, some patients experienced a discomfort or irritation. 5. In Snoring and OSAS cases, it is recommended that patients should first explore non-surgical options prior to choosing a surgical treatment.
