The study of irritation and toxicity of Carthami oil aquapuncture solution applied topically to the skin and the eye mucous membrane (홍화자약침(紅花子藥鍼)의 피부자극시험 및 안점막자극시험)

  • Carthami tinctorii Fructus is known for its good effect on diseases such as fracture, menorrhalgia, menoschesis, puerperium aneilema and so on. The study of irritation and toxicity of Carthami oil aquapuncture solution applied topically to the skin and the eye mucous membrane were carried out to prove the safety of Carthami oil aquapuncture solution in clinical use. Animal for the research was the rabbit and the solution for the test was made from Carthami semen. 6 animals were used for the skin test and 9 animals were used for the eye mucous membrane test. In results, both tests proved that Carthami oil aquapuncture solution makes no irritable reaction on skin and eye mucous membrane of rabbit. We consider that this result is helpful for saying about the safety of Carthami oil aquapuncture solution in clinical use.

The regulatory effect of AST cream on atopic dermatitis-like skin disease.

  • In this study, we investigated an inhibitory effect of AST cream on atopic dermatitis (AD) using a 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene-induced AD murine model. Topical treatment with AST cream ameliorated the severity of AD-like lesional skin through decreases in infiltration of inflammatory cells and time of scratching behaviors. Also, AST cream reduced histamine and IgE levels in serum. The protein levels of IL-4 and IL-6 in AD-like lesional skin were suppressed by AST cream. These findings suggest that AST cream would be an alternative therapeutic agent for AD-like skin diseases.

Congenital midline cervical cleft: An easily misdiagnosed disease

  • Congenital midline cervical cleft is a rare congenital disease. The disease is often misdiagnosed as a branchial cleft deformity, thyroglossal duct cyst, or other skin diseases. It has the following characteristics: skin defect at the midline of the anterior neck, a skin tag at the upper end of the lesion, and a blind sinus tract at the caudal aspect with or without mucoid discharge. Treatment is usually for aesthetic purposes; therefore, early surgical en bloc resection with Z-plasty or W-plasty is recommended to reduce recurrence and scar formation.

  • Small fiber neuropathy (SFN) mainly affects thinly myelinated $A{\delta}$-fibers and unmyelinated C-fibers presented with neuropathic pain like burning feet or numbness. Many conditions are known as a causes of SFN, metabolic derangement, especially glucose intolerance, is the most frequent cause of SFN. It has been hard to diagnose SFN because there has been lack of specialized test for small nerve fiber. Quantification of intraepidermal nerve fiber density using skin biopsy is promising method to diagnose SFN. A skin biopsy also could give helps to research pathophysiology of SFN by specialized stain method.

  • As the incidence of skin cancer increases every year, non-surgical treatment methods for cancer are being sought. Esculetin, a natural dihydroxy coumarin, is attracting attention as a therapeutic agent for certain diseases, such as cancer, based on its broad pharmacological activity. In this study, the anticancer ability of esculetin was evaluated using the epidermoid carcinoma cell line A431. As a result of evaluating the apoptosis ability of esculetin by MTT assay, apoptosis was observed in a time-concentration-dependent manner regardless of the presence or absence of FBS. As a result of quantitative real-time PCR, esculetin reduced cyclin D1 mRNA in a time-concentration-dependent manner. In addition, as a result of western blotting, esculetin significantly inhibited phosphorylation of ERK, JNK, and p38 in a concentration-dependent manner. The results of this study suggest that esculetin has the potential to be used as an effective natural medicine for the treatment of skin cancer.

Red ginseng oil promotes hair growth and protects skin against UVC radiation

  • Background: A wide range of environmental factors, such as diseases, nutritional deficiencies, ageing, hormonal imbalances, stress, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation, may affect the structure and function of the skin that covers the entire surface of the human body. In this study, we investigated roles of red ginseng oil (RGO) in enhancing skin functions, including hair growth and skin protection, using mouse models. Methods: For hair growth experiment, shaved dorsal skins of C57BL/6 mice were topically applied with vehicle, RGO, RGO's major compounds, or minoxidil for consecutive 21 days and skin tissues were examined the hair growth promoting capacity. For skin protection experiment, SKH-1 hairless mice were topically applied with vehicle or RGO twice a day for three days prior to exposure to UVC radiation at 20 kJ/cm2. Skin tissues were collected to evaluate skin protective effects of RGO. Results: Topical application of RGO to C57BL/6 mice effectively promoted hair regeneration by inducing early telogen-to-anagen transition and significantly increasing the density and bulb diameter of hair follicles. Major compounds, including linoleic acids and β-sitosterol, contributed to RGO-promoted hair growth. Treatment with RGO as well as its major components upregulated expression of hair growth-related proteins. Furthermore, in SKH-1 hairless mice, RGO had a protective effect against UVC-induced skin damage by inhibiting inflammation and apoptosis, as well as inducing cytoprotective systems. Conclusion: These data suggest that RGO may be a potent agent for improving skin health and thereby preventing and/or treating hair loss and protecting skin against UV radiation.

  • It is important to estimate the hand skin temperature because it reveals not only physiological properties of a certain diseases but also it can estimate even human mental-stress conditions. In this study, we try to estimate the temporal skin temperature distribution of human hand by applying stress-cold test to possibly apply to estimate a subject's blood circulation condition in his or her hand in terms of normal or abnormal state.

A Status of Student Sickness and Medical Care in University Health Service, Ewha Womans University (이화여자대학교 학생들의 의료실태에 관한 조사 연구)

  • A study was carried out in order to obtain the status of student sickness and medical care in University Health Service, Ewha Womans University. This study was based on the clinical records of University Health Service and hospitals 'for student insurance pay claims during the year of 1981. And the findings from the study were as follows; 1. A total number of student patients cared at University Health Service in 1981 was 9,822 and the incidence rate of primary cared was 773 per 1,000 students. 2. A total number of student patients cared at hospitals was 393 and the incidence rate of secondary cared was 31 per 1,000 students and 5 student out of 31 per 1000 was cared under the haspitalization. 3. The evacuation rate of student patients from University Health Service to hospital was 393 out of 9,822 student primary cared or 4.0 percent. 4. The order of 5 major diseases of primary cared in University Health Service was respiratory system diseases (36.6%), Digestive system diseases (17.4%), Skin and subcutaneous tissue diseases (16.0%), Symptoms and undetermined diagnosis (13.7%) and Nerve and sensory organ diseases (12.0%) respectively. 5. The disease order of student patients(333) cared in hospitals as out-patients was Skin and subcutaneous tissue diseases (40.3%), Nervous and Sensory organ disease (19.2%), Digestive system diseases (10.8%) respectively. 6. The disease order of student patients (60) cared in hospitals as in-patients was Digestive system diseases (35.0%), Respiratory system diseases (13.3%), Nerve and sensory organ diseases (10.0%), Infectious and parasitic diseases (10.0%), and Symptom and Undetermined diagonsis (10.0%) respectively. 7. The evacuation rate of student patients in University Health Service to hospital was varied according to disease groups; the lowest rate was the diseases evacuated to Internal Medicine Department 1.5% or 75 out of 5,072 patient primary cared and the highest rate was Neuropsychiatry department 63.7% or 7 out of 11 patients. 8. The monthly distribution of student patients in University Health Service was the highest in September (17.9%) and April (15.5%) each semester. 9. The monthly number of student patients treated in hospitals was the range 20 to 40 in out patients and 2 to 9 in in-patients. 10. The hospital ill days per case were $4.3{\pm}5.0$ days in out-patients and $9.7{\pm}9.5$ days in in-patients.

Two Cases of Herpes Zoster Following Varicella Vaccination in Immunocompetent Young Children: One Case Caused by Vaccine-Strain (건강한 어린 소아에서 수두 백신 접종 후 발생한 대상포진 2예: 백신주에 의한 1예)

  • Herpes zoster (HZ) has been reported in immunocompetent children who received the varicella vaccine. In vaccinated children, HZ can be caused by vaccine-strain or by wild-type varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Like wild-type VZV, varicella vaccine virus can establish latency and reactivate as HZ. We report two cases of HZ in otherwise healthy 16- and 14-month-old boys who received varicella vaccine at 12 months of age. They presented with a vesicular rash on their upper extremities three to four months after varicella vaccination. In one case, a swab was obtained by abrading skin vesicles and VZV was detected in skin specimens by polymerase chain reaction. The VZV open-reading frame 62 was sequenced and single nucleotide polymorphism analysis confirmed that the virus from skin specimen was vaccine-strain. This is the first HZ case following varicella vaccination confirmed to be caused by vaccine-strain VZV in the immunocompetent children in Korea. Pediatricians should be aware of the potential for varicella vaccine virus reactivation in vaccinated young children.
