  • To enhance the skin delivery of genistein (GT), a soybean isoflavone having anti oxidative activity, comparative formulation studies including liposomes were carried out. GT-loaded conventional and elastic liposomal gel showed the enhanced skin deposition and photoprotection effect as well, in comparison to GT suspension. Elastic liposomes composed of soybean phosphatidylcholine and sodium deoxycholate (85:15, w/w%) were superior to conventional liposomes and were of characteristics as follows: about 130 nm in size; 85% encapsulation efficiency of GT; 5.8% skin deposition of applied dose; 40% inhibition effect on UVB-induced $H_2O_2$ production. Photoprotection effect was closely related to skin deposition of GT. In conclusion, it is possible to suggest that elastic liposomes could be a promising nanocarrier system for efficient skin delivery.

  • Aging of the face is mainly related to the features that are sagging or loss of elasticity of the skin by reducing the volume around the eyes or cheek. Intrinsic aging can be seen to cause thinner dermis, reduction of extracellular matrix and subcutaneous fat. This study was carried out to investigate the skin volume augmentation and anti-wrinkle effects of Tribulus terrestris fruit extract. Skin anti-aging effect of Tribulus terrestris fruit extract was evaluated by using lipid accumulation, expressin of type I procollagen and elastin in preadipocytes and human dermal fibroblasts. Tribulus terrestris fruit extract augmented preadipocytes differentiation about 56% at 100 µg/mL. The type I procollagen and elastin were increased about 35% and 25% by treatment 20% Tribulus terrestris fruit extract, respectively. The clinical study also showed that skin sagging, skin elasticity, and dermal density improved without adverse effect following 4 week application of cream containing 2% Tribulus terrestris fruit extract. We suggest that Tribulus terrestris fruit extract can have the good possibility as skin volume augmenting, skin elasticity and wrinkle improving agent.

  • In this paper, we proposed and developed a new portable skin elasticity measuring device based on the indentation method using piezoelectric effect. The proposed device is designed to minimize the uncertainty caused by the layer structure of the skin when measuring the elasticity of the skin. And, we developed a piezoelectric-based thin-film pressure sensor that can measure quantitatively and quickly during repeated measurement as a device sensor. To confirm the effectiveness of the proposed measuring device, it was compared with the experimental results of the conventional measuring devices under the same experimental conditions, and statistical correlation analysis was performed between the experimental data of the proposed measuring device and the experimental data of the conventional measuring devices. As a result of the correlation analysis, it was confirmed that the proposed measuring device had a high correlation with the conventional measuring devices. Therefore, it was confirmed that the proposed skin elasticity measuring device was effective.

  • Background: Recently, we examined the effects of 2% lidocaine gel on the tactile sensory and pain thresholds of the face, tongue and hands of symptom-free individuals using quantitative sensory testing (QST); its effect was less on the skin of the face and hands than on the tongue. Consequently, instead of 2% lidocaine gel, we examined the effect of 8% lidocaine spray on the tactile sensory and pain thresholds of the skin of the face and hands of healthy volunteers. Methods: Using Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments, QST of the skin of the cheek and palm (thenar skin) was performed in 20 healthy volunteers. In each participant, two topical sprays were applied. On one side, 0.2 mL of 8% lidocaine pump spray was applied, and on the other side, 0.2 mL of saline pump spray was applied as control. In each participant, QST was performed before and 15 min after each application. Pain intensity was measured using a numeric rating scale (NRS). Results: Both the tactile detection threshold and filament-prick pain detection threshold of the cheek and thenar skin increased significantly after lidocaine application. A significant difference between the effect of lidocaine and saline applications was found on the filament-prick pain detection threshold only. NRS of the cheek skin and thenar skin decreased after application of lidocaine, and not after application of saline. Conclusion: The significant effect of applying an 8% lidocaine spray on the sensory and pain thresholds of the skin of the face and hands can be objectively scored using QST.

  • Objectives : In this study, various biological effects of Curcuma longa L. have been studied, however, beneficial effect of Curcuma longa L. in skin health remain still unclear. In this study, Curcuma longa L. water extract (CLE) was prepared. Inhibitory effect of CLE on melanin accumulation of B16F10 cells and expression levels of skin fibril-related proteins of human skin fibroblasts (HSF) were evaluated. Methods : The cytotoxic effect of CLE in B16F10 cells and HSF were examined by MTT assay. Inhibitory effect of CLE on the ${\alpha}-MSH-$ and IBMX-induced melanin accumulation and tyrosinase activity were evaluated in B16F10 cells. The expression levels of connective tissue growth factor (CCN2), Smad2, procollagen $1{\alpha}2$, collagen $1{\alpha}2$, and fibronectin in CLE-treated HSF were analyzed by western blotting. Results : The CLE treatment (concentrations 10 to $400{\mu}g/ml$) for 72 h did not affect to the B16F10 viability. However, 200 and $400{\mu}g/ml$ of CLE treatment for 24 h showed cytotoxic effect in HSF. Therefore, the concentrations 10, 50, and $100{\mu}g/ml$ of CLE were chosen in this study. The CLE treatment for 72 h dose dependently and significantly suppressed melanin accumulation and tyrosinase activity of B16F10 cells. In addition, the CLE treatment up-regulated expression levels of skin fibril-related proteins such as CCN2, Smad2, procollagen $1{\alpha}2$, collagen $1{\alpha}2$, and fibronectin. Conclusions : In conclusion, these results suggest that the CLE could be used as a natural material for skin health.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to find out the efficacy of placenta on the skin by comparing the difference effect between only MTS (microneedle therapy system) and the placenta extract application after MTS treatment. Methods : The present author performed once a week and total 4 times of MTS treatment. The treatment time took about 5~10 minutes and the depth of the needle was adjusted according to the participant's skin condition. One week after each treatment, the change of skin condition was measured. Two weeks after the end of the clinical trial, the skin condition was checked again. Results : In the case of moisture and elasticity, significant increases were observed in both the experimental and control groups. In the experimental group, skin temperature significantly decreased one week after the second treatment, and pore size significantly increased one week after the third treatment. In the case of skin tone, there was a significant temporary decrease after the first treatment in the control group, and in the experimental group, the skin tone showed a total decrease. Conclusion : When placenta extract was applied after MTS, skin temperature decreased and pores enlarged in the second and third treatments, and side effects such as rash and itchiness appeared. The final result showed a significant increase in skin moisture and elasticity. When animal-based ingredients containing high fat content are applied to the skin, the effect on the skin is good, but hypersensitivity reactions may occur, so use them with caution.
