  • KS-code(KS B 0896) for nondestructive ultrasonic testing judge the quality level by ratio of flaw size to plate thickness only. But stress distributions using finite element analysis show that location of the flaws are more important than the flaw size. So, KS-code should take into account of flaw location for judging the quality level of welded steel structures.

  • Background and Objectives : Vocal polyps are caused by inflammation induced by stress or irritation. Many patients with vocal polyps complain voice discomfort. For vocal polyps, surgery such as laryngeal microsurgery has been the mainstay of management. We analyzed the clinical features of vocal polyps, and how the size and location of vocal polyps affect the outcomes of surgery. Methods : We retrospectively reviewed 42 patients from March 2014 to December 2015, who were diagnosed as unilateral single vocal polyp. When we operated on a vocal polyp with laryngeal microscopy, we measured their size and location. The quality of voice was evaluated by GRABS scale, jitter, shimmer, NHR (noise to harmonic ratio), MPT (maximum phonation time), and VHI (voice handicap index) before operation and 4 weeks after operation. Results : When we divided the patients into large-sized vocal polyp group (the longest length >3 mm) and small-sized vocal polyp group (the longest length ${\leq}3mm$), all parameter differences tend to be greater at large sized vocal polyp. However, these differences were not statistically significant (p>0.05). When we divided into two groups depending on the volume of vocal polyp, no distinct tendency was found. When we compared the location (anterior, mid and posterior) of vocal polyp with the improvement of voice quality, more change was found at mid portion vocal polyp, except the difference of VHI. However, these differences were also not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion : All parameter differences tend to be greater at large vocal polyp and polyp of the mid location.

  • The application of health monitoring, including a fault detection technique, is needed to secure the structural safety of large structures. A 2-step crack identification method for detecting the crack location and size of the beam structure is presented. First, a crack occurrence region was estimated using the modified Laplacian operator for the strain mode shape obtained from the distributed local strain data. The crack location and size were then identified based on the natural frequencies obtained from the acceleration data and the neural network technique for the pre-estimated crack occurrence region. The natural frequencies of a cracked beam were calculated based on an equivalent bending stiffness induced by the energy method, and used to generate the training patterns of the neural network. An experimental study was carried out on an aluminum cantilever beam to verify the present method for crack identification. Cracks were produced on the beam, and free vibration tests were performed. A crack occurrence region was estimated using the modified Laplacian operator for the strain mode shape, and the crack location and size were assessed using the natural frequencies and neural network technique. The identified crack occurrence region agrees well with the exact one, and the accuracy of the estimation results for the crack location and size could be enhanced considerably for 3 damage cases. The presented method could be applied effectively to the structural health monitoring of large structures.

  • Mobile Crowdsourcing (MCS) has become an emerging paradigm evolved from crowdsourcing by employing advanced features of mobile devices such as smartphones to perform more complicated, especially spatial tasks. One of the key procedures in MCS is to collect answers from mobile users (workers), which may face several security issues. First, authentication is required to ensure that answers are from authorized workers. In addition, MCS tasks are usually location-dependent, so the collected answers could disclose workers' location privacy, which may discourage workers to participate in the tasks. Finally, the overhead occurred by authentication and privacy protection should be minimized since mobile devices are resource-constrained. Considering all the above concerns, in this paper, we propose a lightweight and privacy-preserving answer collection scheme for MCS. In the proposed scheme, we achieve anonymous authentication based on traceable ring signature, which provides authentication, anonymity, as well as traceability by enabling malicious workers tracing. In order to balance user location privacy and data availability, we propose a new concept named current location privacy, which means the location of the worker cannot be disclosed to anyone until a specified time. Since the leakage of current location will seriously threaten workers' personal safety, causing such as absence or presence disclosure attacks, it is necessary to pay attention to the current location privacy of workers in MCS. We encrypt the collected answers based on timed-release encryption, ensuring the secure transmission and high availability of data, as well as preserving the current location privacy of workers. Finally, we analyze the security and performance of the proposed scheme. The experimental results show that the computation costs of a worker depend on the number of ring signature members, which indicates the flexibility for a worker to choose an appropriate size of the group under considerations of privacy and efficiency.

  • Background/Aims: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) is integral to the diagnosis of gastrointestinal (GI) subepithelial tumors (SETs). The impact of different EUS-FNB tissue sampling techniques on specimen adequacy and diagnostic accuracy in SETs has not been fully evaluated. This study aimed to compare the diagnostic outcomes of slow-pull (SP) and standard suction (SS) in patients with GI SETs. Methods: In this retrospective comparative study, 54 patients were enrolled. Medical records were reviewed for location and size of the target lesion, FNB needle type/size, technical order, specimen adequacy, diagnostic yield, and adverse events. The acquisition rate of adequate specimens and diagnostic accuracy were compared according to EUS-FNB techniques. Results: The mean lesion size was 42.6±36.4 mm, and most patients were diagnosed with GI stromal tumor (75.9%). The overall diagnostic accuracies of the SP and SS techniques were 83.3% and 81.5%, respectively (p=0.800). The rates of obtaining adequate core tissue were 79.6% and 75.9%, respectively (p=0.799). No significant clinical factors affected the rate of obtaining adequate core tissue, including lesion location and size, FNB needle size, and final diagnosis. Conclusions: SP and SS had comparable diagnostic accuracies and adequate core tissue acquisition for GI SETs via EUS-FNB.

  • This study purposed to develop GIS model for evaluating hospital location in a metropolitan city. Secondly, the suitability score of hospital was compared with the number of outpatient/inpatients of hospitals. This study used administrative data collected from the annual report of the 5 ward offices from Daejeon in Korea in 2004. 7 Acute care hospitals operated in Daejeon in 2004 were selected for the analysis. The suitability of hospitals in a metropolitan city was evaluated by the economic factors which were assumed to influence the health care demand. Each criterion was measured from each Dong. Correlation coefficients between the suitability score of hospital and the number of patients were varied depending on the buffering size. The relationship showed positive relationship with the number of inpatient (0.15) and outpatients (0.10) on the 0.5km buffering size. However, the correlation coefficients were changed to a negative direction or decreased when the buffering size was increased to 1.0km, 1.5km, and 2.0km.

  • The initiation and growth of short fatigue cracks in the simulated aircraft structure with a series of rivet holes was detected by acoustic emission (AE). The location and the size of short tracks were determined by AE source location techniques and the measurement with traveling microscope. AE events increased intermittently with the initiation and growth of short cracks to form a stepwise increment curve of cumulative AE events. For the precise determination of AE source locations, a region-of-interest (ROI) was set around the rivet holes based on the plastic zone size in fracture mechanics. Since the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was very low at this early stage of fatigue cracks, the accuracy of source location was also enhanced by the wavelet transform do-noising. In practice, the majority of AE signals detected within the ROI appeared to be noise from various origins. The results showed that the effort of structural geometry and SNR should be closely taken into consideration for the accurate evaluation of fatigue damage in the structure.

  • This paper researches static and dynamic bending behaviors of a crystalline nano-size shell having pores and grains in the framework of strain gradient elasticity. Thus, the nanoshell is made of a multi-phase porous material for which all material properties on dependent on the size of grains. Also, in order to take into account small size effects much accurately, the surface energies related to grains and pores have been considered. In order to take into account all aforementioned factors, a micro-mechanical procedure has been applied for describing material properties of the nanoshell. A numerical trend is implemented to solve the governing equations and derive static and dynamic deflections. It will be proved that the static and dynamic deflections of the crystalline nanoshell rely on pore size, grain size, pore percentage, load location and strain gradient coefficient.

  • Many congenital and acquired defects occur in the maxillofacial area. The buccal fat pad flap (BFP) is a simple and reliable flap for the treatment of many of these defects because of its rich blood supply and location, which is close to the location of various intraoral defects. In this article, we have reviewed BFP and the associated anatomical background, surgical techniques, and clinical applications. The surgical procedure is simple and has shown a high success rate in various clinical applications (approximately 90%), including the closure of oroantral fistula, correction of congenital defect, treatment of jaw bone necrosis, and reconstruction of tumor defects. The control of etiologic factors, size of defect, anatomical location of defect, and general condition of patient could influence the prognosis after grafting. In conclusion, BFP is a reliable flap that can be applied to various clinical situations.
