The study confirmed an increasing pattern for foolishness in terms of the portrayals of sitcom mothers. The result also substantiated the tendentious nature of humor involved in sitcom mothers. Based on the findings, limitations and further research are discussed.

  • The Canadian public broadcaster CBC had successfully aired a sitcom centered on a Korean immigrant family from 2016 to 2021. The show is based on the play Kim's Convenience written by a Korean-Canadian playwright Ins Choi. This study explores literary features of Kim's Convenience that accounts for its popularity; three elements of the show play crucial roles in maintaining the balance between specificity and universality. First, Choi deploys a Korean immigrant story in the form of comedy. Second, the main plot revolves around an ordinary family with generational strains that ends in reconciliation. Third. the Kims are depicted more as an archetypical family than a stereotypically Asian one. By closely interweaving these elements, Choi induces the audience to find commonalities from the show, and racial specificities of the Kim's family become "spicy" attractions of the play.

  • In this paper, I studied the relation between narrative construction (especially focusing on motif) and humor mechanism based on binge watching environment. Several motif theories such as B. Tomachevski, Horst and Ingrid Dämmrich and S. Chatman are used as a basic study method in chapter II. In popular sitcom , sometimes kernels(according to S. Chatman's term) in certain season's story are changed into satellites(according to S. Chatman's term) in other season's stories. The motif of Ross and Rachel's conflict is a representative example for this switching process. Especially on binge watching environment, as the interval length is much more shortened, viewers tend to reflect their own emotional memory into characters less strongly than segment watching environment. As a result, the possibility 'heavy' stories such as seperation are quickly changed into 'light' humorous matters is increased. This kind of hierarchy variation of repeated motif make the viewers laugh, because they can feel sudden liberating energy by eliminating psychological pressure. It means the characteristics of sitcom's humor on binge watching environment can also be explained by the theory of 'laugh as a eliminating tension', which I. Kant representatively said.

  • In general, food depicted in animated films symbolically conveys cultural emotions. And yet, as diverse studies have shown, even from the perspective of cultural semiotics, there are different ways to interpret food symbolism. This study focuses on food depicted in American and Japanese animation, through a comparative analysis of scenes from "The Simpsons" (1989-present), the longest-running American animated program, and "Atashin'chi" (2002-2009), a much-beloved animated sitcom that follows the daily experiences of a Japanese family. It is hoped that the research presented here may be applied as a criterion in the production stage for understanding the cognitive function of cultural underpinnings and symbolic expression in animated works.

  • This study examines the effect of changes in the content distribution strategy on VOD usage by comparing the VOD usage pattern following the changes in the IPTV and Digital Cable SVOD holdback policy. The result of this study shows that after changing the SVOD holdback from one week to three weeks, the VOD usage decreased up to 50 percent while paid VOD revenue increased as a result of the rise in PPM. The time series analysis shows statistical decrease in the number of SVOD usage, SVOD usage per user, and PPV revenue per user while VOD revenue per user increased significantly. Moreover, SVOD usage within the drama genres such as mini-series, weekend series, weekend special series, and sitcom decreased significantly. This research provides a case study on the effect of the broadcaster's content distribution policy on the VOD user behavior thus proposing broadcasters and platform operators the ways of establishing distribution strategy as well as invigorating the VOD usage.

  • There has been not the research on the reason of success based on the characteristic of narrative and characters of , I defined the major characteristic of this genre as family animation, and aimed at researching strategic character and narrative. The characteristics of each characters are identified, and compared with other animation, soap opera, and sitcom. The portion that characters participated in the narrative was analyzed, and the relationship between the point and viewers was also researched in the specific episodes. 1) The characters against the ideal ones function to satirize the fixed idea pursued by the mass, and stimulate the viewers' desire. 2) All the characters are protagonist and sometimes antagonist, or advisor. The circulating position expands the target of viewers, and decreases the cultural discount. 3) It produces a couple of layered narrative, then children, teenagers, and adults enjoy the each different depth of the narrative, resulted in the target expansion. Considering on the limit of theme and target in Korean animation, I expect the findings above will enable to produce more valuable and consistent contents. Later, characters in the Korean family animation is to be researched and the expandability and sustainability would be ensured.
