Deep-sea fishing vessel No. 501 Oryong was fully flooded through the openings and was sunk down to the bottom of sea due to the very rough sea weather on the way of evasion after fishing operation in the Bearing Sea with many crews dead and/or missed. In this study, calculation of ship stability was carried out using KST-SHIP(ship calculation system of KST), considering the effect of flow fluid and fish catch arrangement according to the progress of its sinking accident, and damage stability was analyzed. For this study, intact stability calculation of its accident ship under the full load departure condition and its calculation result were verified by comparing with each other, and intact stability according to displacement from the departure of accident ship just before the accident was calculated and analyzed. Damage stability was calculated according to the progress during sinking accident and also analyzed.

Deep-sea fishing vessel No. 501 Oryong was fully flooded through its openings and sunk to the bottom of the sea due to the very rough sea weather on the way of evasion after a fishing operation in the Bearing Sea. As a result, many crew members died and/or were missing. In this study, a full-scale ship flooding and sinking simulation was conducted, and the sinking process was analyzed for the precise and scientific investigation of the sinking accident using a highly advanced Modeling & Simulation (M&S) system of the Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) analysis technique. To objectively secure the weather and sea states during the sinking accident in the Bering Sea, time-based wind and wave simulation at the region of the sinking accident was conducted and analyzed, and the weather and sea states were realized by simulating the irregular strong wave and wind spectrums. Simulation scenarios were developed and full-scale ship and fluid (air & seawater) modeling was performed for the flooding sinking simulation, by investigating the hull form, structural arrangement & weight distribution, and exterior inflow openings and interior flooding paths through its drawings, and by estimating the main tank capacities and their loading status. It was confirmed that the flooding and sinking accident was slightly different from a general capsize and sinking accident according to the simple loss of stability.

This study is focused on the skill to prevent RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) from sinking. For better ability to prevent sinking, single hypalon tube is replaced by double TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) tube that is excellent at frictional wear strength and oil-resisting qualities. High buoyant materials are arranged in empty spaces of ship so that ship's spare buoyancy is increased. And for restoration of stable position of ship, the self-righting system is installed. Aluminium alloy is used for increasing hull strength.

Deep-sea fishing vessel No. 501 Oryong was fully flooded through its openings and sank to the bottom of the Bering Sea. The tragic accident was attributed to rough sea weather after a fishing operation in the Bering Sea, and led to the death or loss of many crewmen. In this study, the ship stability calculation was carried out using KST-SHIP (ship calculation system of KST), considering the free surface effect and fish catch arrangement according to the progress of its sinking accident, and stability after flooding was analyzed. The calculation results obtained using KST-SHIP were verified by comparing them to intact stability calculation sheet of the accident ship under the full load departure condition, and intact stability according to displacement from the departure of accident ship up to the moment of the accident was calculated and analyzed. The stability after flooding was also calculated and analyzed according to the progress during its sinking accident.

In order to simulate the evacuation simulation of a ship during a sinking, the slope angle change of the ship must be reflected during the simulation. In this study, the passenger evacuation simulation is implemented by continuously applying the heeling angle change during sinking. To reflect crowd behavior, the human density and the congestion algorithm were developed in this research and the walking speed experiment in the special situation occurring in the inclined ship was conducted. Evacuation simulation was carried out by applying the experimental results and the change of the walking speed according to the heeling angle of the ship. In order to verify the evacuation simulation, test items suggested by International Maritime Organization (IMO) and SAFEGUARD Validation Data Set conducted on a large Ro-PAX ferry (SGVDS 1) which performed real evacuation trial in full-scale ships were performed and the results of simulation were analyzed. Based on hypothetical scenario of when a normal evacuation command is delivered to the passengers of MV SEWOL in time, we predicted and analyzed the evacuation process and the number of casualties.
The Ro-Ro ferry ship capsized and sank to the bottom of the sea because of the rapid turning for several reasons, such as lack of stability due to the center of gravity rise from the extension and rebuilding of the stern cabin, excessive cargo loading, and shortage ballast, poor lashing, etc. The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze the cause of the ship's rapid flooding, capsizing, and sinking accident according to rapid turning scientifically and accurately using the Fluid-Structure Interaction( FSI) analysis technique. Several tests were conducted for this cause investigation of the flooding and sinking accident correctly and objectively, such as the realization of the accurate ship posture tracks according to the accident time using several accident movies and photos, the validation of cargo moving track, and sea water inflow amount through the exterior openings and interior paths compared with the ship's posture according to the accident time using the floating simulation and hydrostatic characteristics program calculation, and the performance of a full-scale ship flooding·sinking simulation.

There has been no previous study on technology development of large capacity drainage pump for rescue sinking ship in the country. The agricultural drainage pump was widely used for rescue sinking ship but this pump has several problems such as efficiency, low displacement and malfunction in winter. Therefore, this paper proposes to solve the problems for swiftly rescue sinking ship and develops the drainage pump system that has $20m^3/min$ mass flow rate specification at suction head 8 m. The centrifugal pump type the most commonly used in the field of naval architecture and ocean engineering was selected and designed based on the requirement specification. The blade design of impeller was derived from the Stepanoff coefficient and requirement specification and used computational fluid dynamics to review the target mass flow rate according to the impeller RPM at design operating conditions. We also performed structure analysis of the impeller to find structurally vulnerable points for the pump in service and completed the theoretical design of drainage pump system.
The author was appointed by the UK Department of Transport as a fellow Assessor with R. A. Williams during Lord Donaldson's Assessment (1995) of the loss of the OBO ship DERBYSHIRE and in 1996 as a UK Assessor for the planning and surveys of the wreck. He relinquished his appointment in October 1997 and was not thereafter Involved in the review and analysis of data gathered. This paper may be considered to be complementary to the reports of the UK and EC Assessors (Williams and Torchio, 1998a and 1998b) which followed that review and analysis. The paper deals with the history and loss of the ship, Including the concept developed in 1995 of 13 possible loss scenarios in a formal safety Risk Matrix of probability and seriousness. It analyses abnormal wave effects on hatch cover collapse, on ship bending, and on flooding of bow spaces and no. 1 hold. The implosion-explosion mechanics during sinking is outlined to explain the devastation of the wreck. The 1996 and 1997 underwater surveys are outlined as are the findings of fact. Each of the final 14 loss scenarios is analysed in the light of the firm and circumstantial survey evidence, plus many other factors of survey experience, analyses and experiments. The updated Risk Matrix speaks for itself and leads to the prime conclusions and major recommendations.
