  • For uplink multi-user massive MIMO systems, conventional minimum mean square error (MMSE) linear detection method achieves near-optimal performance when the number of antennas at base station is much larger than that of the single-antenna users. However, MMSE detection involves complicated matrix inversion, thus making it cumbersome to be implemented cost-effectively and rapidly. In this paper, we first summarize in detail the state-of-the-art simplified MMSE detection algorithms that circumvent the complicated matrix inversion and hence reduce the computation complexity from ${\mathcal{O}}(K^3)$ to ${\mathcal{O}}(K^2)$ or ${\mathcal{O}}(NK)$ with some certain performance sacrifice. Meanwhile, we divide the simplified algorithms into two categories, namely the matrix inversion approximation and the classical iterative linear equation solving methods, and make comparisons between them in terms of detection performance and computation complexity. In order to further optimize the detection performance of the existing detection algorithms, we propose more proper solutions to set the initial values and relaxation parameters, and present a new way of reconstructing the exact effective noise variance to accelerate the convergence speed. Analysis and simulation results verify that with the help of proper initial values and parameters, the simplified matrix inversion based detection algorithms can achieve detection performance quite close to that of the ideal matrix inversion based MMSE algorithm with only a small number of series expansions or iterations.

  • Integrated interpretation of multi-geophysical data has been continuously used in terms that it has provided more confident information than the result from single-geophysical data. Especially, geostatistical integration has its own superiority that it is possible to deal with spatial characteristics as well as physical properties of survey data and the process of integration is clear. This paper further extends the previous work of geostatistical inversion for integrated interpretation. In this paper, we propose a new way of dealing with the case that the multi-geophysical data do not share the measurement range. According to the geostatistical kriging, the closer between the measurement points, the smaller kriging variance we get, and vice versa. We used this spatial properties as a weighting value to the process of geostatistical inversion for the geophysical data integration. An objective way to integrate different kinds of geophysical data measured at different ranges is provided with this algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose a new computationally efficient joint iterative multi-input multi-output (MIMO) detection scheme using a soft interference cancellation and minimum mean squared-error (SIC-MMSE) method. The critical computational burden of the SIC-MMSE scheme lies in the multiple inverse operations of the complex matrices. We find a new way which requires only a single matrix inversion by utilizing the Taylor series expansion of the matrix, and thus the computational complexity can be reduced. The computational complexity reduction increases as the number of antennas is increased. The simulation results show that our method produces almost the same performances as the conventional SIC-MMSE with reduced computational complexity.

  • The evaluation of shear modulus is very important in various fields of civil engineering. In this paper, the site characterization method using HWAW method is applied to determine shear wave velocity profile of two test sites in order to verify the field applicability of HWAW method. Shear wave velocity profiles by HWAW method are compared with shear wave velocity profiles by SASW test and PS-Suspension Logging test. Through field applications, it is shown that HWAW method can minimize the effect of noise and lateral non-homogeneity of the site and determine detailed local shear wave velocity profile of site.

  • In this paper, we propose a normalization algorithm that can be applied to adaptive filters for multi-channel active noise control. The FxLMS (Filtered-x Least Mean Square) algorithm for the single-channel active noise control can be normalized in the same way as the NLMS (Normalized Least Mean Square) algorithm, whereas in case of the multi-channel active noise control, the single-channel normalization for the FxLMS algorithm cannot be extended to the normalization for the multi-channel FxLMS algorithm straightforwardly. First, we adopt a generalized normalization algorithm for the multi-channel FxLMS algorithm based on the principle of minimal disturbance and then, proposed a normalized algorithm considering only diagonal elements to avoid computation for matrix inversion. We carried out performance comparisons of the proposed algorithm with other algorithms without normalization. It is shown that the proposed algorithm presents better convergence characteristics under non-stationary environments.

  • Purpose: Acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE) is a fulminant disease of the brain characterized by bilateral thalamic lesions, and is prevalent among children in East Asia. The prognosis of ANE is usually poor with a high mortality rate and neurological sequelae. This study aimed to delineate the clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of ANE. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed clinical data of 399 pediatric patients with encephalitis who were admitted to Samsung Medical Center from December 1998 to March 2011. We enrolled ten patients (11 cases) with ANE and analyzed their demographic, clinical, and neuroimaging data. The location and extent of the brain regions were checked based on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery, T1-, and T2-weighted imaging findings; the presence of contrast enhancement, restricted diffusion, and hemorrhage. Results: Ten patients were identified, including one patient with two episodes. The median age of onset was 1.5 years (0.4-8.4 years). The mortality rate was 40%, and only 30% of patients survived without neurological sequelae. The definite involvement of the brainstem on brain magnetic resonance imaging was significantly correlated with mortality (P =0.04). Conclusion: Broad and extensive brainstem involvement suggested the fulminant course of ANE. Early diagnosis of ANE before brainstem involvement, through careful identification of symptoms of brain dysfunction, may be the best way to achieve better neurological outcomes.
