  • In this paper, computer simulations with the absolute nodal coordinate formulation for large deformation problems in flexible multibody dynamics are compared to the real experiments. A high speed camera was employed to capture the deformed shapes of a thin beam, a plate, a rotating chain, and a paper strip. The measured data was used to calculate precise values for stiffness and damping ratio of the objects. Also a rotating strip and a helicoseir problem were formulated for computer simulation, and the computational results are also compared to the experiments.

  • One feature of a computer simulation experiment, different from a physical experiment, is that the output is often deterministic. Moreover the codes are computationally very expensive to run. This paper deals with the design and analysis of computer experiments(DACE) which is a relatively new statistical research area. We model the response of computer experiments as the realization of a stochastic process. This approach is basically the same as using a spatial linear model. Applications to the optimal mechanical designing and model calibration problems are illustrated. Algorithms for selecting the best spatial linear model are also proposed.

  • This paper deals with the dynamic analysis and experiments of moving-magnet linear actuator with/without spring. On the basis of two dimensional (2-D) analytical solutions and experiments, control parameters such as thrust constant, back-emf constant, inductance and resistance are obtained. And then, dynamic simulation algorithm is established from the voltage and motion equation. Finally, for various values of frequency, dynamic simulation results for characteristics of current and displacement of moving-magnet linear actuator with and without spring are presented and confirmed through the experiments. In particular, This paper applies the PWM voltage waveform obtained from a DSP for bidirectional voltage drive to the actuator.

  • Electromagnetic forming (EMF) simulations consider 3-dimensionally coupled electromagnetic-mechanical phenomenon using LS-DYNA, therefore the calculation cost is normally expensive. In this study, a sensitivity analysis in regard to the simulation variables affecting the calculation time was carried out. The EMF experiments were conducted to form an elliptically protruding shape on a high-strength steel sheet, and it was predicted using LS-DYNA simulation. In this particular EMF simulation case, the effect of several simulation variables, viz., element size, contact condition, EM-time step interval, and re-calculation number of the EM matrices, on the shape of elliptical protrusion and the total calculation time was analyzed. As a result, reasonable values of the simulation variables between the simulation precision and calculation time were proposed, and the EMF experiments with respect to the charging voltages were successfully predicted.

  • The randomness of the input variables in simulation experiments produce output responses which are also realizations of random variables. The random responses make necessary the use of statistical inferences to adequately describe the stochastic nature of the output. The analysis of the simulation output of non-terminating simulations is frequently complicated by the autocorrelation of the output data and the effect of the initial conditions that produces biased estimates. The regenerative method has been developed to deal with some of the problems created by the random nature of the simulation experiments. It provides a simple solution to some tactical problems and can produce valid statistical results. However, not all processes can he modeled using the regenerative method. Other processes modeled as regenerative may not return to a given demarcating state frequently enough to allow for adequate statistical analysis. This paper shows how the state transformation concept was successfully used in a queueing model and a job shop model. Although the first example can be analyzed using the regenerative method. it has the problem of too few recurrences under certain conditions. The second model has the problem of no recurrences. In both cases, the state transformation increase the frequency of the demarcating state. It was shown that time state transformations are regenerative and produce more cycles than the best typical discrete demarcating state in a given run length.

  • The flow field around a symmetrical airfoil in a uniform flow under the generation of noise was studied by experiments and numerical simulation. The experiments are conducted by visualizing the surface flow over the airfoil with a shear-sensitive liquid-crystal coating and by measuring the instantaneous velocity field around the trailing edge of the airfoil. The numerical simulation was carried out by LES. (omitted)

The proposed system is composed of berth allocation module, yard planning module, resource allocation module, sequencing module, and simulation module. All the sub-modules except resource allocation module are built into integrated simulation model using simulation package AutoMod. Simulation experiments are performed according to the number of AGVs and AGV allocation policies.

  • This paper presents a novel method for evaluating the usefulness of online product recommendation. Previous studies on evaluating recommendation systems have mostly relied on two methods : testing the accuracy of estimating user preferences by recommendation systems, or empirically testing the effectiveness with lab experiments involving human participants. The former does not measure the usefulness directly and hence can be misleading; the latter is expensive in that it requires a working online store System and test participants. In order to address the problems, the proposed approach uses simulation to imitate customer behavior and evaluate the usefulness of recommendation. Models for user behavior and an abstract Internet store are developed for simulation. Actual simulation experiments are performed to illustrate the use of the approach.
