This paper represents the first comprehensive comparison of the Newton-Raphson's method and Simple Iterative Procedure (SIP) in the maximum likelihood estimation of the two-parameter Weibull distribution. Computer simulation is employed to compare these two methods for multiply censored, singly censored data (Type I or Type Ⅱ censoring) and complete data. Results indicate the Newton-Raphson's with the Menon's estimated value, as an initial point remains the effective iterative procedure for estimating the parameters.

The constrained maximum likelihood estimation of the number of trials in several binomial populations under order restriction, such as simple order, is discussed. The estimation procedure is based on, so called, pool adjacent violators algorithm. Three handy estimators are given and their performances are compared using an artificial example.

This paper considers the estimation of the parameters of a normal population from which a sample which has been censored at a known point is obtained. Simple estimators are presented which are given in closed forms. It is shown that maximum likelihood estimators are obtained by using the estimation procedure iteratively. Some computer simulation results are given.

Fundamental period is one of the most critical parameters affecting the seismic design of buildings. In this paper, a very simple approach is presented for estimating the fundamental period of multiple-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) structures. The basic idea behind this approach is to replace the complicated MDOF system with an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system. To realize this equivalence, a procedure for replacing a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) system with an SDOF system, known as a two-to-single (TTS) procedure, is developed first; then, using the TTS procedure successively, an MDOF system is replaced with an equivalent SDOF system. The proposed approach is expressed in terms of mass, stiffness, and number of stories, without mode shape or any other parameters; thus, it is a very simple method. The accuracy of the proposed method is investigated by estimating the fundamental periods of many MDOF models; it is found that the results obtained by the proposed method agree very well with those obtained by eigenvalue analysis.

We propose a simple estimation procedure in the mixed linear models with censored normal data, using both Buckly and James(1979) type pseudo random variables and Lee and Nelder's(1996) estimation procedure. The proposed method is illustrated with the matched pairs data in Pettitt(1986).

In manfacturing systems, to overcome the inherent complexities and uncertainties, due-dates are usually decided by some simple rules. This study proposes a computational procedure for estimating production lead time for computerized manufacturing systems. Based on the current system status stored in the computers, the procedure estimates production lead time for an incoming order. The result is more accurate than the ones produced by old rules, and yet the procedure is fast in computation speed enough to use in real time. Simulations are used to prove these.

We are concerned in the estimation of lifetime distribution of a component having a few observed failure data and we demonstrate that we can use the maximum likelihood estimation utilizing the censored data when the number of components in use is quite large. Weibull distribution is assumed for the lifetime and a simple estimation procedure is introduced. We also propose the method of determining the optimal number of spares required for a specified period without introducing cost functions. The proposed methods are applied to the photon stop and the water-cooled flange which are major components in Pohang Light Source.

This paper deals with the application of sensitivity method to the parameter estimation for the dynamic analysis of gener-al mechanical system. In this procedure we take the derivatives of the given system with respect to a certain parameter and use this information to implement the steepest descent method. This paper will give two examples of this technique applied to simple vehicle models. This paper will give two examples of this technique applied to simple vehicle models. Simulation results show excellent convergence and accuracy of parameter estimates.

A gas chromatographic determination of dienestrol in dienestrol cream has been studied. Dienestrol cream was dissolved in pyridine and silylation was done by using N, O-bis (trimethylsilyl) trifluoroacetamide. The derivative was injected into 3% silicone OV-17 column for chromatographic estimation. The dienestrol peak was found to be well separated from the other components of the cream. The detection limit was obtained to be $5.6{\times}10^{11}$ mol of dienestrol for this method. As there is no need for prior separation procedure, this experiment is extremely simple and less time consuming as compared to the conventional methods for estimation of dienestrol in cream.
