Structral crack of RC structure generally occurs when the tension stress by applied load is larger than tension resistance of concrete, and it means deterioration of structure and the decrease of load resistance. Because structural crack of structure can occur critical damage to structure occasionally, the research on crack detection algorithm of RC structure is needed for assurance of structural safety and effective maintenance of structure. In this paper, we executed the laboratory test on measuring strain of RC beam's tension and compression zone, using strain gauge which is widely used on strain measurement of civil structure. By using measured strain, we analyzed strain change, elastic modulus change, and neutral axis change to detect crack of RC beam. As a result, we proposed the simple and effective crack detection algorithm using trends of neutral axis position change.
A series of tests on simple-welded plate specimens (SWPS) and T-stub tension specimens simulating some of the joint details in moment frame connections were conducted in this investigation. The effects of weld strength mismatch and weld metal toughness on structural behavior of these specimens were considered under both static and dynamic loading conditions. Finite element analyses were performed by taking into account typical weld residual stress distributions and weld metal strength mismatch conditions to facilitate the interpretation of the test results. The major findings are as follows: (a) Sufficient specimen size requirements are essential in simulating both load transfer and constraint conditions that are relevant to moment frame connections, (b) Weld residual stresses can significantly elevate stress triaxiality in addition to structural constraint effects, both of which can significantly reduce the plastic deformation capacity in moment frame connections, (c) Based on the test results, dynamic loading within a loading rate of 0.02 in/in/sec, as used in this study, premature brittle fractures were not seen, although a significant elevation of the yield strength can be clearly observed. However, brittle fracture features can be clearly identified in T-stub specimens in which severe constraint effects (stress triaxiality) are considered as the primary cause, (d) Based on both the test and FEA results, T-stub specimens provide a reasonable representation of the joint conditions in moment frame connections in simulating both complex load transfer mode and constraint conditions.
Model pile tests using calibration chamber are performed in !his paper in order to clarify the effect of the fundamental differences between the newly developed SPLT(Simple Pile Loading Test)and the conventional pile loading test on the pile bearing capacity. They are : (1) the direction of the applied load to mobilize the skin friction ; and (2) the use of reduced sifted sliding core. The conclusions obtained from the model pile tests are as follows : (1) The skin friction in tension loading is found to be somewhat smaller than that in compression loading. The average ration is 0.73 with the coefficient of variation (COV) of 0.18. (2) The ratio of the tip resistance rosin연 the reduced sized sliding core to that using the whole shoe shows wide scattering ; its average is 0.99 and the COV is 0.28. The aver - age of 0.99 means that there is no considerable difference in the tip resistance whether the reduced sized sliding core or the whole shoe is used, on condition that penetration depth ratio is larger than 4 : if the boundary effect of the chamber test is considered, the resistance of the whole shoe might be even larger.

For the practical application of U-flanged Truss Hybrid beams, the flexural capacity of hybrid beams with end reinforcement details using vertical steel plates was verified. The bending test of U-flanged Truss Hybrid beams was performed using the same top chord under the compressive force, but with the thickness of the bottom plate and the amount of tensile reinforcement. The initial stiffness and maximum load of the specimen with tensile reinforcement have a higher value than that of the specimen without tension reinforcement, but the more tensile reinforcement, the greater the load decrease after the maximum load. In the case of the specimen with tensile reinforcement, because the test result value is 76% to 88% when compared with the flexural strength according to Korea Design Code, the safety of the U-flanged Truss Hybrid beam with the same details of the specimens can't ensure. Therefore, the development of new details is required to ensure that the bottom steel plate and the tensile reinforcement can undergo sufficient tensile deformation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the nonlinear behavior of a cold-formed steel (CFS) shear panel, which was composed of built-up columns and tension-only diagonal straps for bracing, when excited by earthquake motions. For the purpose, shaketable tests of a full-scale two-story cold-formed steel (CFS) shear panel were conducted. in the shear panel, the diagonal strap is a major lateral force resisting system, which is a very ductile member, and the columns, which are gravity resisting members, are fabricated by wooing studs, which can't develop their full flexural strength because they may buckle locally. The test results showed that the straps dissipate most of energy of the shear panel in a tension-only and pinched way and the columns dissipate it relatively smaller than the straps but they still contribute to overall dissipation. As a result of this study, investigating real nonlinear behavior of a structure in earthquakes is a very important process by shaketable tests even though it is simple.

An experimental investigation of the fatigue through crack growth behavior under simple stepped variable loading condition has been performed using Al7075-T651. Experiments were carried out by using cantilever bending type specimens, with chevron notches on a small electro-magnetic test machine. Tensile overloads have a retarding effect on the fatigue crack growth rates, therefore tensile overloads were used for the beneficial effect on the fatigue life. While in most cases compressive overloads have only a vanishing effect on crack growth rates, some experiments with single edge crack tension specimens reveal a marked growth retardation. The stress ratios used in this investigations varies from R=0.32 to 0.81, from R=0.04 to 0.76, from R=-0.15 to 0.73, and from R=-0.33 to 0.68 and the peak load for each case was not varied. The crack growth and crack closure were measured by Kikukawa's compliance method with a strain gauge mounted on the backside of each specimens. The results obtained are as follows. When the stepped variable load was applied, the smaller the stress ration was, the larger the delayed retardation of the crack growth rate was. The fatigue crack growh rate data obtained for through cracks were plotted well against the effective stress intensity factor range from 4.0 to 20.0MP{a^{SQRT}m}. It was found that the effective stress intensity factor range ratio was related well to the opening stress intensity factor, the maximum stress intensity factor, and crack length.

Finite element analysis using modern constitutive equation is one of the most general tools to simulate the deformation behavior and to predict the life of the structure. Constitutive equation becomes complicated so as to predict the material behavior more accurately than the classical models. Because of the complexity of constitutive model, numerical treatment becomes so difficult that the calculation should be verified carefully. One-element tests, simple tension or simple shear, are usually used to verify the accuracy of finite element analysis using complicated constitutive model. Since this test is mainly focused on the time integration scheme, it is also necessary to verify the equilibrium iteration using material stiffness matrix and to compare FE results with solution of structures. In this investigation, viscoplastic solution of thick walled cylinder was derived considering axial constraints and was compared with the finite element analysis. All the numerical solutions showed a good coincidence with FE results. This numerical solution can be used as a verification tool for newly developed FE code with complicated constitutive model.

Most beam-to-column connections are symmetrically reinforced because of the reverse action caused by earthquakes. However, in weak-earthquake regions like Korea, asymmetrically reinforced connections could be used. In particular, the connections between concrete-filled tube (CFT) column and H-shape beam could be applied using a simplified lower diaphragm. The tensile capacity or Combined Cross Diaphragm for upper reinforcing was tested using a simple tension test. Four types for lower reinforcing combined Cross, none, horizontal T-bar, and vertical plate were tested using the ANSI/AISC SSPEC 2002 loading program. Horizontal T-bar and stud bolts in vertical flat, bar transmit tensile stress from the beam's bottom flange to filled concrete. All test specimens satisfied 0.01 radian inelastic rotational requirement in ordinary moment frame of AISC seismic provision. According to the results of the parametric studies simplified lower diaphragms demonstrated outstanding strength, stiffness, and plastic deformation capacity which could lead to more sufficient seismic performance in the field.

This study examined 8th-graders' conceptions of force on a simple pendulum and investigated cognitive conflict and conceptual change through kinesthetic experience in swing. Participants of this study were guided to anticipate the direction of total force acting on a pendulum at three critical positions and observed it through swing experience. Having completed this, students read an article explaining the results they observed. Most of them considered gravity, tension, and motion-force to be the real forces acting on a pendulum in pre-test. Though they were interested in the activity and conceded their expectations to be different from observed results, the degrees of their cognitive conflict were not significantly high. In summation, 'interest' was the highest and 'anxiety' was the lowest. Most of the students memorized the direction of forces on a swing, but few could explain the reason behind the occurrence in an immediate post-test and delayed post-test.
Filament Winding Process is a comparatively simple operation in which continuous reinforcements in the form of roving are wound over a rotating mandrel. It is well established and versatile method for storage tanks and pipes for the chemical and other industries. In this study, tensile strength of a filament wound ring specimens were evaluated by a split disk test fixture and a dress disk test fixture. The results obtained from experiments were compared with the theoretical values from the rule of mixtures. The purpose of this paper is the suggestion of an appropriate test method for the evaluation of tensile properties of filament wound structures. The tensile strength of a ring specimen tested by the dress disk test showed better agreement with the theoretical values than those tested by the split disk test because of higher stress concentration in edges of a split disk test fixture. The results showed that the tensile strength of a ring specimen was influenced by the geometry of test fixture, the continuity of fibers, fiber-tension, fiber-end and stress concentration in specimen.
