  • Mesoporous silica films with three different pore sizes were prepared by using cationic surfactant, non-ionic surfactant, or triblock copolymer as structure directing agents with tetramethylorthosilicate as silica source in order to control the pore size and wall thickness. They were synthesized by an evaporation-induced self-assembly process and spin-coated on Si wafer. Mesoporous silica films with three different pore sizes of 2.9, 4.6, and 6.6 nm and wall thickness ranging from $\sim$1 to $\sim$3 nm were prepared by using three different surfactants. These materials were optically transparent mesoporous silica films and crack free when thickness was less than 1 m m. The photoluminescence spectra found in the visible range were peaked at higher energy for smaller pore and thinner wall sized materials, consistent with the quantum confinement effect within the nano-sized walls of the silica pores.

  • Flake-type micro hollow silica was synthesized by precipitation method using an $Mg(OH)_2$ inorganic template and sodium silicate and ammonium sulfate as the silica precursors. We investigated the effects of the silica precursor concentration on the shape, shell thickness, and surface of the hollow silica. When the concentration of the silica precursor was 0.5 M, the hollow silica had a smooth and translucent thin shell, but the shell was broken. On the other hand, the shell thickness of the hollow silica changed in the range of 12 nm to 18 nm with the increase of the precursor concentration from 0.7 M to 1.1 M. Simultaneously, unintended spherical silica satellites were created on the shell surface. The number of satellites and the size rose according to the increased concentration of silica precursor. The reason for the formation of spherical silica satellites is that the $NH_4OH$ nucleus generated in the synthesis of hollow silica acted as another silica reaction site.

  • We successfully synthesized $Fe_3O_4/SiO_2$ nanoparticles with ultrathin silica layer of $1.0{\pm}0.5$ nm that was fine controlled by changing concentration of $Fe_3O_4$. Among various reaction conditions for silica coating, increasing concentration of $Fe_3O_4$ was more effective approach to decrease silica thickness compared to water-to-surfactant ratio control. Moreover, we found that concentration of the 1-octanol is also important factor to produce the homogeneous $Fe_3O_4/SiO_2$ nanoparticles. The present approach could be available to apply on preparation of other core/shell nanoparticles with ultrathin silica layer.

  • A fast process for producing pure silica glasses with the reproducibility of 100% by means of sintering of silica aerogels was optimized. The density of silica glasses synthesized by heat-treating upto 110$0^{\circ}C$ with the heating rate of 0.1$^{\circ}C$/min was 2.197 g/㎤. Synthetic silica glasses(5 mm thickness) exhibited the transmittance of 92% in the near IR range as well as they had the excellent mechanical properties such as flexural strength of 162 MPa and hardness of 778 kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$.

  • Uniform, hollow nanosilica spheres were prepared by the chemical coating of cationic polystyrene (cPS) with tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), followed by calcination at 600 $^{\circ}C$ under air. cPS was synthesized by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization using 2,2'-azobis (2-methyl propionamidine) dihydrochloride as the cationic initiator, and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) as a stabilizer. The resulting cPS spheres were 280 nm in diameter, and showed monodispersion. After coating, the hollow silica product was spherically shaped, and 330 nm in diameter, with a narrow distribution of sizes. Dispersion was uniform. Wall thickness was 25 nm, and surface area was 96.4 $m^2/g$, as determined by BET. The uniformity of the wall thickness was strongly dependent upon the cPS surface charge. The effects of TEOS and ammonia concentrations on shape, size, wall thickness, and surface roughness of hollow $SiO_2$ spheres were investigated. We observed that the wall thicknesses of hollow $SiO_2$ spheres increased and that silica size was simultaneously enhanced with increases in TEOS concentrations. When ammonia concentrations were increased, the irregularity of rough surfaces and aggregation of spherical particles were more severe because higher concentrations of ammonia result in faster hydrolysis and condensation of TEOS. These changes caused the silica to grow faster, resulting in hollow $SiO_2$ spheres with irregular, rough surfaces.

  • Adsorption and desorption of toluene from bare and $TiO_2$-coated silica with a mean pore size of 15 nm was studied using breakthrough curves and temperature programmed desorption. Thicknesses of $TiO_2$ films prepared by atomic layer deposition on silica were < 2 nm, and ~ 5 nm, respectively. For toluene adsorption, both dry and humid conditions were used. $TiO_2$-thin film significantly improved toluene adsorption capacity of silica under dry condition, whereas desorption of toluene from the surface as a consequence of displacement by water vapor was more pronounced for $TiO_2$-coated samples with respect to the result of bare ones. In the TPD experiments, silica with a thinner $TiO_2$ film (thickness < 2 nm) showed the highest reactivity for toluene oxidation to $CO_2$ in the absence and presence of water. We show that the toluene adsorption and oxidation reactivity of silica can be controlled by varying thickness of $TiO_2$ thin films.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference of the wafer nanotopography impact on the oxide-film thickness variation between the STI CMP using ceria slurry and STI CMP using fumed silica slurry. The nanotopography impact on the oxide-film thickness variation after STI CMP using ceria slurry is 2.8 times higher than that after STI CMP using fumed silica slurry. It is attributed that the STI CMP using ceria slurry follows non-Prestonian polishing behavior while that using fumed silica slurry follows Prestonian polishing behavior.

  • Anti-reflection film was coated by using spherical silica nano colloids. Silica colloid sol was reserved between two inclined slide glasses by capillary force, and particles were convectively stacked to form a film onto the substrate as the water evaporates. As the sliding speed increased, the thickness of the film decreased and the wavelength at the maximum transmittance decreased. The microstructure observed by SEM showed that silica particles were nearly close packed, which enabled the calculation of the effective refractive index of the film. The film thickness was measured by proffer and calculated from the wavelength of maximum transmittance and the effective refractive index. The effective refractive index of the film could be controlled by a subtle controlling of the coating speed and by mixing two different sized silica particles. When the 100 nm and 50 m particles were mixed at 4:1-5:1 volume ratio, the maximum transmittance of $95.2\%$ for one-sided coating was obtained. This is the one that has increased by $3.8\%$ compared to bare glass substrate, and shows that $99.0\%$ of transmittance or $1.0\%$ of reflectance can be achieved by the simple process if both sides of the substrate are coated.

  • The effect of filler type and dispersion time on thin film characterization is studied. Hollow silica powders which have the advantage of transmittance are selected. In this paper, the characterization of haze, transmittance, and gloss are analyzed in terms of filler concentration and coating thickness, respectively. As a result, the value of haze and gloss increased with increasing of filler concentration and coating thickness, respectively. In addition, the variation of transmittance by filler concentration and coating thickness is not occurred. In conclusion, it is assumed that hollow silica powders as a filler have an advantage of concentration increment and transmittance.

  • Homogenous silica-coated $CoFe_2O_4$ samples with controlled silica thickness were synthesized by the reverse microemulsion method. First, 7 nm size cobalt ferrite nanoparticles were prepared by thermal decomposition methods. Hydrophobic cobalt ferrites were coated with controlled $SiO_2$ using polyoxyethylene(5)nonylphenylether (Igepal) as a surfactant, $NH_4OH$ and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The well controlled thickness of the silica shell was found to depend on the reaction time and the amount of surfactant used during production. Thick shell was prepared by increasing reaction time and small amount of surfactant.
