  • Surface modification of colloidal silica nanoparticles without disrupting the electric double layer of nanoparticles is a major challenge. In the work, silane was employed to modify colloidal silica nanoparticles without inducing bridge flocculation obviously. The effect of pH value of the silica sol, the amount of silane in feed, and reaction temperature on the graft amount and the final size of modified particles was investigated. The increased weight loss by TG and the appearance of $T_2$ and $T_3$ except for $Q_2$ and $Q_3$ signals by CP/MAS $^{29}Si$ NMR of the modified samples verified the successful grafting of silane. The graft amount reached 0.57 mmol/g, which was slightly lower than theory value, and the particle size remained nearly the same as unmodified particles for acidic silica sol at the optimum condition. For alkaline silica sol after modification, aggregates composed of several nanoparticles connected together with silane moleculars as the bridge appeared.

  • Surface modification of montmorillonite (MMT) with 3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (3GTO) in mild methanol/water mixture has been investigated in detail. The influence of reaction conditions (including silane concentration in feed, reaction time and reaction temperature) on the grafting amount and yield of silane, and further on the grafting pattern of silanes was studied by thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and BET. Higher silane concentration, longer reaction time and higher reaction temperature are all benefit to higher grafting amount. When the grafting reaction was performed with 3 mmol/g silane concentration, at $90^{\circ}C$ for 24 h, the grafted amount and yield of silane reached 1.4443 mmol/g and 30%, respectively. Based on the XRD and BET data analysis, a speculation that the grafting pattern of silanes was concentration dependence was proposed.

  • This study investigated the characteristics for rice husk pulverization and surface modification of biomass byproducts composed of rice husk, corn extract gourd, wheat bran, and soybean curd. The size of particles of rice husk was at 6.44 ㎛ and represented the most affordable material for preparing the bio-degradable film among the tested byproducts. The silane treatment and adding 2% of ESO (Epoxidized soybean oil) and 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane solution mixed in a 1:1 ratio were best to the surface modification and SEM-based particle shape. Above the results, adding 2% of mixed solution after silane treatment of rice husks processed through an air classifying mill (ACM) allows for its use as a raw material of bio-degradable plastic film.

  • Polyamide membrane degradation by chlorine has been studied to improve membrane durability. In this study, it was found that the salt rejection was reduced rapidly and flux of the membrane was increased slowly far membrane treated under chlorine condition. In order to improve resistance to chlorine of the polyamide reverse osmosis membrane, fluorine-containing silane coupling agent (FSCA) was introduced to surface modification. Surface properties and chlorine resistance of silane modified membrane were compared with virgin membrane. It was found that the surface of silane modified membrane has dense structure according to FSCA concentration increasing. The results of surface analysis suggest that FSCA retrieved a severe change in the hydrophobicity and surface roughness. In addition, it appears that FSCA can enhance chlorine resistance due to the interaction of such substance with free radical chlorine.

  • In this study, the commercial nanofiltration membranes were modified with octyltrimethoxysilane(OcTMS) and (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) to improve fouling resistance and to separate dye. The chemical structure and binding energy of elements of silane-deposited surface were analyzed using XPS analysis. And the morphology and hydrophilicity property of silane-modified NF membrane were analyzed using FE-SEM, EDX, AFM, and contact angle. The surface charge of silane-modified NF membrane was characterized by zeta potentiometer analyzer. As a result, silane-modified NF membrane improved fouling resistance about 2 times as compared with that of the commercial membrane. And the silane-modified NF membranes effectively were removed cation dye over 98%.

  • The influence of a silane layer on the performances of polymer light emitting diode(pLED)s has been studied. Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane(GPS) with an epoxy functional group was used as a surface modifier for ITO substrates. The GPS layer was inserted between an ITO and a poly(3,4)-ethylenedioxythiophene/polystyrenesulfonate(PEDOT) by wet process and the performances of PLEDs were investigated. The introduction of GPS layer increased the brightness and efficiency of PLEDs by 30%. In addition, the lifetime of PLEDs was also improved considerably by using GPS as a surface modifier.

  • The effects of maleic-anhydride-grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) and montmorillonite (MMT) on the wear resistance of polypropylene (PP) were investigated. The surface of MMT was modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, and the interfacial interaction between PP and MMT was improved using PP-g-MAH. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm that silane was grafted on the surface of MMT. The Taber abrasion test and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the wear resistance and observe the surface morphology of PP, respectively, after wear testing. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was used to compare the effects of PP-g-MAH and silane modification of MMT on the dispersion of MMT. The results indicated that silane was successfully grafted onto the surface of MMT. Moreover, the wear resistance of PP was improved by the addition of MMT. The wear resistance of PP composites comprising silane-modified MMT and PP-g-MAH was higher than those of other PP composites. This was attributed to silane improving the interfacial interaction between MMT and PP.

  • The surface of glass fiber bundle was modified with functionalized silanes and phenolic resin to improve the tensile strength as well as the adhesion of glass fiber to matrix phenolic resin. The surface modification of reinforcing glass fiber can play a significant role in controlling whole composite characteristics. We applied surface modification of glass fiber with two different functionalized silanes, such as glycidyltrimethoxysilane(G-silane) and aminopropyltriethoxysilane (A-silane), and phenol formaldehyde(PF) resin in one pot or separated process under different coating compositions and temperatures. Thermal treatment temperature is very important factor to improve the mechanical properties of modified glass fiber. Modified glass fiber bundle treated at $170^{\circ}C$ showed the highest tensile strength of $10.05g_f/D$. Surface analyses by scanning electron microscope(SEM) and FT-IR spectroscopy were used to characterize the surface coatings on glass fiber bundles. Mechanical property changes as functions of treatment conditions and coupling agent types were also explained.

  • This study is concerned with preparation of chlorine resistant (CR) thin layer composite (TFC) membranes. The novel method for making CR membranes from commercially available RO membranes is based on sol-gel condensation of trialkoxyalkylsilane derivatives. The silane coupling agents used in this study have different number of alkyl carbon chain group (methyltriethoxysilane; METES and octyltriethoxysilane; OCTES). The OCTES composite membranes have a significant tolerance to chlorine compared to commercial polyamide RO membrane or METES composite membranes. The surface properties of membranes were examined to explain a significant difference of chlorine tolerance between OCTES composite membrane and the other two membranes. In this study, we tried several surface analyses to explain difference of chlorine tolerance. The element composition results of surface analysis by EDX confirmed that both silane fixed on polyamide firmly, The surface roughness and contact angle results showed long chain alkyl group of OCTES enhancing hydrophobicity considerably than METES. The hydrophobicity plays an important role in chlorine resistance of membrane.

  • It is well-known that the mechanical properties of MMT(montmorillonite) nanocomposites are better than those of conventional composites. In this study, tensile tests were performed to determine the effect of silane modification of MMT and its weight ratio on the tensile properties of MMT/epoxy nanocomposites. It was found that the tensile strength and the elastic modulus of MMT/epoxy nanocomposites increased with increasing weight ratio of MMT. The elastic modulus of silane-modified MMT/epoxy nanocomposites was higher than that of untreated MMT/epoxy nanocomposites, irrespective of weight ratio.
