  • Guided waves can be used for the inspection of long range pipelines. Surface corrosion is often found as a major defect type in pipelines. The reciprocity relation is a well-established theorem by which one can simplify complicated mathematical expressions. The approach has been already applied to plate and half-space structures to obtain the closed-form solutions of scattered amplitude. However, results for the case of cylindrical structures have not been reported yet. In this paper, the scattering of torsional waves, which is widely used in commercial applications, is explored by the reciprocity theorem approach. Obtaining closed-form solutions of the amplitudes of propagating waves is much simplified by using the reciprocal relation. The scattered amplitudes for elliptical and rectangular defect shapes are calculated with respect to defect depth and width, at frequencies between 0 and 500 kHz. The amplitude shows the periodic result as a function of frequency. The derived closed-form solutions can play a significant role in quantitative signal interpretation.

  • For the condition monitoring of the journal bearing in rotating machinery, a system for their diagnosis by acoustic emission(AE) was developed. AE has been used to detect abnormal conditions in the bearing system. It was found from the field application study as well as the laboratory experiment using a simulated journal bearing system that AE RMS voltage was the most efficient parameter for the purpose of current study. Based on the above results, algorithms and judgement criteria for the diagnosis system was established. The system is composed of four parts as follows: the sensing part including AE sensor and preamplifier, the signal processing part for RMS-to-DC conversion to measure AE ms voltage, the interface part for transferring RMS voltage data into PC using A/D converter, and the software part including the graphic display of bearing conditions and the diagnosis program.

  • Previous studies for routing In USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Networks) appear to be unreliable due to the dependence on non-spatial data and the lack of map overlay analysis. Multiple spatial parameters and radio propagation modeling techniques were integrated to derive RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) value between route nodes and produce a highly reliable path map. It was possible to identify area-wide patterns of USN route subject to many different Influences (e.g. the specific effects of radio blocking factors such as the visible area, road area, cell duplicated area, and building density), which cannot be acquired by traditional non-spatial modeling. The quantitative evidence concerning the USN route for individual cell as well as entire study area would be utilized as major tools to visualize paths in real-time and to select alternative path when failure or audition of route node occurs.

  • The CANDU 6 reactor assembly consists of an array of 380 pressure tubes, which are installed horizontally in a large cylindrical vessel, the Calandria, containing the low pressure heavy water moderator. The pressure tube is located inside the calandria tube and the annulus between these tubes, which forms a closed loop with $CO_2$ gas recirculating, is called the Annulus Gas System(AGS). It is designed to give an alarm to the operator even for a small pressure tube leak by a very sensitive dew point meter so that he can take a preventive action for the pressure tube rupture incident. To judge whether the operator action time is enough or not in the design of Wolsong 2,3 & 4, the Leak Before Break(LBB) assessment is required for the analysis of the pressure tube failure accident. In order to provide the required data for the LBB assessment of Wolsong Units 2, 3, 4, a series of leak detection capability tests was performed by injecting controlled rates of heavy water vapour. The data of increased dew point and rates of rise were measured to determine the alarm set point for the dew point rate of rise of Wolsong Unit 2. It was found that the response of the dew point depends on the moisture injection rate, $CO_2$ gas flow rate and the leak location. The test showed that CANDU 6 AGS can detect the very small leaks less than few g/hr and dew point rate of rise alarm can be the most reliable alarm signal to warn the operator. Considering the present results, the first response time of dew point to the AGS $CO_2$ flow rate is approximated.

  • Home evolved Node-B (HeNB), also called a femtocell or a femto base station, is introduced to provide high data rate to indoor users. However, two main problems arise in femtocell networks: (1) Small coverage area of HeNB, which results in limited cell-splitting gain and ping-pong handover (HO) problems and (2) high inter-femtocell interference because HeNBs may be densely deployed in a small region. In this study, an efficient cooperation mechanism called an HeNB-aided virtual-HO (HaVHO) scheme is proposed to expand the coverage area of femtocells and to reduce inter-femtocell interference. The cooperation among neighbor HeNBs is exploited in HaVHO by enabling an HeNB to relay the data of its neighbor HeNB without an HO. The HaVHO procedure is compatible with the existing long term evolution specification, and the information exchange overhead in HaVHO is relatively low. To estimate the signal to interference plus noise ratio improvement, the area average channel state metric is proposed, and the amount of user throughput enhancement by HaVHO is derived. System-level simulation shows that HaVHO has a better performance than the other four schemes, such as lesser radio link failure, lesser ping-pong handover, lesser short-stay handover, and higher user throughput.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient cooperative diversity technique, which partition the codewords of each mobile and transmit portions of each codeword through independent fading channels using duo-binary turbo codes. A coded diversity technique can achieve high cooperative diversity gain by decoding and transmitting of the re-encoded signal, while this can also cause high performance degradation due to failure of the decoding. In this paper, we introduce various coded diversity technique using duo-binary turbo codes which are defined as channel coding schemes in the IEEE WiMax specification, and also demonstrate performance simulation results with the analysis. We also propose a cooperative diversity technique using rate-compatible duo-binary turbo codes, where user terminals with different parity symbols cooperate each other. Simulation results investigated in this paper reveal that the proposed scheme show high diversity gain at a reasonal SNR range.

  • In this paper, we introduce a new method which is available for analyzing the throughput of the packet radio network by using the auxiliary Markov transient matrix with a failure state and a success state. And we consider the effect of symbol error for the network state(X, R) consisted of the number of transmitting PRU X and receiving PRU R. We examine the packet radio network of a continuous time Markov chain model, and the direct sequence binary phase shift keying CDMA radio channel with hard decision Viterbi decoding and bit-by-bit changing spreading code. For the unslotted distributed multi-hop packet radio network, we assume that the packet error due to a symbol error of radio channel has Poisson process, and the time period of an error occurrence is exponentially distributed. Through the throughputs which are found as a function of radio channel parameters, such as the received signal to noise ratio and chips of spreading code per symbol, and of network parameters, such as the number of PRU and offered traffic rate, it is shown that this composite analysis enables us to combine the Markovian packet radio network model with a coded DS/BPSK CDMA radio channel.

  • This paper presents the development of a 10 W solid-state hybrid power amplifier(SSPA). operating over $7.7\sim8.5GHz$. The fabrication and measurement of this amplifier are performed with 3 sections, such as the front one for high gain, the middle one for driving, and high power one, to minimize the risk of failure and to increase the easiness of development. and then the final amplifier is realized by connecting 3 sections above mentioned, DC bias circuit, and temperature compensation circuit on one housing. Total small signal gain obtained is about $45\pm1dB$, the input and output return losses are 25 and 27 dB respectively. The output power measured at 1 dB gain compression point for 3 frequencies at 7.7, 8.1, and 8.5 GHz are $39.8\sim40.4dBm$, which is about 10 W. and the 3rd-order harmonic powers of 2 tones test are 13.34 dBc at output power 37.5 dBm. These obtained results satisfies the initially required specification. and the realized SSPA can be installed as a subsystem of the microwave transponder for telecommunication.

  • In this paper, we proposed an algorithm to solve the problem that can't maintain hop synchronization using only early-late gate tracking loop due to the drift of geo-stationary satellite in frequency hopping satellite communication system. When the signal is transferred to downlink through DRT(Dehop-Rebop Transponder), the problem with synchronization loss is occurred periodically when using only early-late gate tracking loop, because of energy loss in each side portion of hop due to orbital variation of the satellite. To solve this problem, we have developed Anti-Shrink synchronization tracking algorithm which uses the prediction value of transmission timing and the structure of inner-outer gate instead of early-late gate with the ranging information. Through simulations, we showed that the performance of the Anti-Shrink algorithm is better than that of simple inner-outer energy ratio algorithm and similar to that of conventional early-late tracking loop algorithm with ranging information. No synchronization failure in the proposed algorithm was occurred because of less energy loss and robustness without the ranging information.

  • Studies were conducted to determine the efficiency of decondensation protocols. Sperm obtained from seven normal donors was immediately washed after liquefaction and then decondensed using the method of West et al. (1989) and my original protocol. My optimized protocol entailed mixing 1 ml aliquots of semen with 4 ml phosphate buffered saline (PBS). Following centrifugation, pellets were resuspended in 1 ml PBS containing 6 mM EDTA. After centrifugation, pellets were resuspended in 1 ml PBS containing 2 mM dithiothreitol at $37^{\circ}C$ for 45 min. Following mixing with 2 ml PBS and centrifugation, pellets were resuspended by vortexing. While vortexing, 5 ml of fixative were gently added. Slide preparation was accomplished using the smear method and it was stored at $4^{\circ}C$. When comparing these protocols, the degree of sperm decondensation and head swelling was monitored by measuring nuclear length, area, perimeter, and degree of roundness using FISH analysis software. Apparent copy number for chromosome 1 and, separately, for the sex chromosomes was determined by FISH using satellite DNA probes for loci DIZ1, DXZ1 and DYZ3. Sperm treated by my decondensation protocol showed significant increases (p<0.05) in length, area, perimeter, and degree of roundness. There was a significant decrease (p<0.05) in the frequency of nuclei displaying no signal but no change in the frequency of nuclei with two signals in samples decondensed by my protocol. My data suggested that decondensation using my original protocol may lower the frequency of cells with spurious "nullisomy" due to hybridization failure without inducing spurious "disomy" resulting from increased distances between split signals.
