  • A Gymnophallid cercaria was found in the gonadal tissue of Tapes philippinarum, and was described as a new species, Cercaria tapes n. sp. The host clams were collected from the intertidal zone of Seo-myon, Seo-chon gun, Korea from September 1980 to August 1981. The size of sporocysts was $380-650{\times}130-160{\mu}m$. The anterior part of the cercaria bears a subterminal opening and pharynx. The sporocyst bears ca. 30 cercariae and germ balls. The cercaria is elliptical in shape. The dimension of body is $160-187{\times}62-77{\mu}m$. the tail stem is $47-52{\times}17{\mu}m$, and the tail furcae is $67-72{\times}12-15{\mu}m$. Excretory bladder is Y-shaped, and the flame cell formula is 2(1)+(1)=4. The infection rate of the cercaria to the host clam was $2.01\%$ (42 infected/2,086 short-necked clams observed). The highest infection rate ($5.74\%$) was found in March, and the lowest one ($0.4\%$) observed in January. No infection was detected in May and June. The infection rates varied with the size of the short-necked clam. It was the clams of host of 2.1-3.0 cm, 3.1-4.0 cm and 4.1-5.0 cm in shell length are $0.38\%,\;15.3\%$ and $0.09\%$ respectively. The cercaria was not observed in the specimens smaller than 2.0 cm in shell length.

  • This study was investigated to find the effects of sowing time on growth and yields of cowpea grown in a southern region of South Korea. Experiments were carried out in Naju, Jeonnam Province (Latitude 35° 04' N, Longitude 126° 54' E) during 2013 and 2014. The intermediate-erect type strains used in this study were Jeonnam1 and Jeonnam2 (Okdang). Sowing time was performed between middle-April and middle-August at intervals of one month. The days from sowing to emergence was significantly higher in the middle-April sowing (12 days) time but there was no significant differences other sowing dates (5 to 3 days). The days from sowing to first flowering were shorter for sowing dates between middle-April and middle-July because sowing time was delayed and then were lengthened again at middle-August sowing; the days were longest at middle-April sowing (around 62 days) and were shortest at middle-July sowing (35 days). The days from first flowering to harvesting were short for the sowing dates between middle-April and middle-July (17 to 15 days) but were relatively long for middle-August sowing date (24 days). Stem length was relatively long for the middle-May and middle-June sowing dates. Peduncle length was relatively long for the middle-April sowing date. Main-stem node number was highest for the middle-July sowing. Branch number per plant was highest in the middle-April sowing. Seed yields were highest for the middle-April sown Jeonnam1 and the Jeonnam2 (Okdang) strains showing, 199 and 211 kg/10a, respectively, and then followed by sowing in middle-July, 191 and 195 kg/10a, respectively.

  • We have developed a new HD-2700 (Hitachi High-Technologies Corp., Japan) scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) that includes an automatic aberration correction function, and a large-solid-angle energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy detector that enables high-resolution and sensitive analysis. For observation with atomic resolution, using spherical-aberration-corrected STEM, in order that satisfactory performance of the device can be achieved readily, and within a short time, irrespective of the operator's skill level, a spherical-aberration-correction device with an automatic aberration-correction function was developed. This automatic aberration-correction function carries out the entire correction-related process (aberration measurement, selection and correction) automatically, with automatic selection of the aberrations that require correction, and automatic measurement of the appropriate corrections.

  • Orostachys japonicus, called Wasong as herbal medicine and a short day plant, should be artificially kept in long daylength to control anthesis of its florets. The study was done to clarify the effect of daylength (10, 13, 16 hours a day) on growth, morphological characters, and flowering. The treatments were done on August 25 and afterward samples were taken every 2 weeks. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. With longer daylength plant height and inflorescence length were increased but number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were decreased. Leaves and bracts, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights were increased with longer daylength from late September while floret dry weight showed reverse result. Florets formed were the greatest in daylength of 10 hours during September but the least during the other period. Anthesis of the florets was observed only in daylength of 10 hours during October and all the plants from the treatment were flowered.

  • Floret flowering of Orostachys japonicus, a monocarpic and short day plant, should be controlled to continue cultivating. The study was done to examine the effect of transplanted seedling size (large, 18 leaves; medium, 13 leaves; small, 8 leaves) on growth, morphological characters, and flowering. Night-break treatment of 2 hours at midnight were done on August 25 and afterward samples were taken every 2 weeks. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. With larger seedling transplanted, plant height, inflorescence length, number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were increased. Leaves and bracts, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights were increased as transplanted seedlings became larger. Although formed florets were inclined with larger transplanted seedling, they were not flowered because of the night-break treatment, meaning that the larger transplanted seedlings, the more economic yield.

  • Shoot parts of a monocarpic and short day plant Orostachys japonicus have been used as a herbal medicine. The study was carried out to examine the effect of transplanting time (May 30, June 30, July 30) of its seedlings on its growth, morphological characters, and flowering. Two hours night-break treatment at midnight was done since Aug. 25 when samples were taken afterward every 4 weeks. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. Plant height and inflorescence length became longer with delayed transplanting time. Number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were more and thicker when transplanted on June 30 than two other treatments. Leaves and bracts, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights showed nearly the same result to the number of leaves although floret dry weight were increased as transplanting time was delayed. Although florets were most formed when transplanted on June 30, they were not flowered because of the night-break treatment, meaning that the transplanting time had little effect on its growth and anthesis of the florets.

  • Objective: We investigated the temporal expression profiles of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) and mRNA in the peripheral blood of pigs during development and identified the lncRNAs that are related to the blood-based immune system. Methods: Peripheral blood samples were obtained from the pigs at 0, 7, 28, and 180 days and 2 years of age. RNA sequencing was performed to survey the lncRNA and mRNA transcriptomes in the samples. Short time-series expression miner (STEM) was used to show temporal expression patterns in the mRNAs and lncRNAs. Gene ontology and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes analyses were performed to assess the genes' biological relevance. To predict the functions of the identified lncRNAs, we extracted mRNAs that were nearby loci and highly correlated with the lncRNAs. Results: In total of 5,946 lncRNA and 12,354 mRNA transcripts were identified among the samples. STEM showed that most lncRNAs and mRNAs had similar temporal expression patterns during development, indicating the expressional correlation and functional relatedness between them. The five stages were divided into two classes: the suckling period and the late developmental stage. Most genes were expressed at low level during the suckling period, but at higher level during the late stages. Expression of several T-cell-related genes increased continuously during the suckling period, indicating that these genes are crucial for establishing the adaptive immune system in piglets at this stage. Notably, lncRNA TCONS-00086451 may promote blood-based immune system development by upregulating nuclear factor of activated T-cells cytoplasmic 2 expression. Conclusion: This study provides a catalog of porcine peripheral blood-related lncRNAs and mRNAs and reveals the characteristics and temporal expression profiles of these lncRNAs and mRNAs during peripheral blood development from the newborn to adult stages in pigs.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the influence of grafting timing, rootstock cut timing and leaf removal with promalin ($GA_{4+7}+BA$) treatments on the maiden tree growth, lateral development and flower bud initiation. In mid-March 1997, two-year-old M.9-T337 rootstocks selected with trunk diameter over 1 cm were planted in the field. Chip budding with 'Fuji' scion on M.9-T337 rootstock budded in mid-April was earlier in sprouting than chip budding in mid-June. Late cutting chip budding (LCCB) with 'Fuji' scion on M.9-T337 rootstock was lower in the failed budding percentage with 14% than that of early cutting chip budding (ECCB). Especially, ECCB in April was not suitable for scion growth such as uniformity with high percentage of failed tree. Grafting timing in mid-June and rootstock cutting timing of LCCB induced more branches and flower buds than other treatments. Removal of 8 to 10 uppermost immature leaves on central leader stem and application of Promalin 250 mg/L after every 30 cm of terminal growth produced a 189 cm tall tree with 9 flower buds and 14.2 short lateral shoot from 30 to 35 cm long in length in 1998. Promalin increased branching on second-season growth and, when combined with leaf removal, resulted in uniform distribution of branches along the central leader stem.

  • A field experiment was conducted in Chungiu and Jungwon to evaluate growth characteristics, root development, dry matter yield, crude protein yield and palatability according to nitrogen fertilizer level at intercropping cultivation of sorghum $\times$ sudangrass hybrid(hereinafier referred as SSH) and soybean. Nitrogen level was six treatment of Okg, 30kg 60kg, 90kg 120kg, and 150kg per hectare, and cutting date (sorghum $\times$ sudangrass and soybean) was july 28. 1. In the SSH, plant length was increased with increasing nitrogen fertilizer from 0kg/ha to 120kg/ha, but 150kgha treatment was decreased cornpared to 120kg/ha treatment. In the soybean, plant length did not show difference among 0kg, 30kg 60kg, and 90kg per hectare, but 120kg and 150kgfha treatment was on the contrary short. In the SSH, leaf length, leaf width and leaf number were the highest in 120kg/ha treatment, but soybean showed multifarious. 2. Stem diameter of SSH was increased with increasing nitrogen fertilizer. But soybean was thick from 0kg/ha treatment to 60kg/ha treatment, while above 90kg/ha treatment was on the contrary thin. Stem of SSH was hard with increasing nitrogen fertilizer, but soybean was soft with increasing nitrogen fertilizer. Root weight (Dry matter) of SSH was increased with increasing nitrogen fertilizer. On the contrary, soybean was decreased with increasing nitrogen fertilizer. 3. In the dairy cattle and Korean native cattle, palatability according to nitrogen fertilizer was the highest at 90kgha treatment, while 120kgha treatment and 150kgha treatment was the lowest. But in the deer, 30kg/ha treatment of low nitrogen fertilizer was the highest in palatability. 4. Nitrogen content of root of SSH was increased with increasing nitrogen fertilizer(P<0.01). But in soybean, 30kg and 60kg/ha treatment were higher than 0kg, 90kg, 120kg and 150kg/ha treatment(P<0.01). Total niwogen content of soil were high at 90kg 120kg 150kgha trea~ment(P<0.01). 5. Dry matter yield was high at the 90kg 120kg and 150kgha treatment as range from 15, 262kg/ha to 15, 614kg/ha without significant difference among those, but Okgha treatment was the lowest as 11, 183kg/ha (PC 0.05). Protein content of SSH was the highest at 90kg/ha treatment as 8.3 percentage. Soybean was highest at 60kgha treatment as 22.9 percentage. Protein yield was the highest at 90kg/ha treatment as 1, 547.6kg/ha, but Okgha treatment was the lowest as 1, 022.8kg/ha (P<0.01).
