This paper describes dynamic finite element analyses performed to study the dynamic behaviors of a shipping container under the impact onto rigid target due to the accidental fall from the hight of 9 m. Using two and three dimensional techniques, the shipping container which gave the maximum damage, ten different drop orientations are considered ; at intervals of $5^{\circ}$ from $45^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ According to the present results, the orientation of the shipping container which gave the maximum damage is $85^{\circ}$ from horizontal for oblique drop in the primary impact. In the optimal design of the shipping container, the impact limiter material must be considered importantly because it's proper selection affects the weight and the manufacturing cost of the shipping container. The analysis of the shipping container in this paper demonstrated that the shipping container is structurally sound relative to the regulatory drop test requirements.

The world of container shipping and container terminal business is changing and container ports need to know what the changes are in order to plan how to respond. In particular, the container transport industry has noticed two major developments such as globalization and consolidation. The purpose of this paper is to review the current trend towards globalization and consolidation of container liner shipping and container terminal business. It also investigates the impact of these market developments on container ports and presents its implications for port development, management and operation, and port competition policy. According to the discussion of this paper a greater exercise of market power of container terminal operators will have negative impacts on international trade and national economy, especially port users, including container lines, exporters and importers. An empirical evidence on the exercise of market power is required to develop competition rules on market dominance at a national and international level. This paper suggests 'port coopetition' as a solution for smaller and regional container terminal operators to survive in a competitive business environment.

본 논문은 비모수적 선형계획법인 자료포락분석을 이용하여 세계 컨테이너 선복량 상위 20대 글로벌 선사 중 11개 선사와 세계 컨테이너 선복량 상위 100대 기업에 포함된 7개 우리나라 선사를 대상으로 최근 5년(2005년~2009년)의 두 집단간 효율성 비교와 기간별 효율성 변화를 분석하여 우리나라 컨테이너선사의 국제경쟁력을 평가하였다. 분석대상기간의 효율성 측정 결과, 두 집단 모두 점진적으로 하락하였으며, 특히 2008년 금융위기의 직접적인 영향으로 2009년도 컨테이너선사의 효율성이 급격히 하락한 것으로 나타났다. 글로벌 컨테이너선사와 우리나라 컨테이너선사의 효율성 비교 분석 결과, 우리나라 컨테이너선사들의 효율성이 글로벌 컨테이너선사들의 효율성 보다 더 높게 측정되었다. 이는 우리나라 컨테이너선사들이 선복량 규모는 작지만 보다 효율적으로 운영되고 있다는 것을 의미한다. 결과적으로 우리나라 컨테이너선사들이 효율성 측면에서 글로벌 컨테이너선사에 비해 국제경쟁력이 존재하는 것으로 평가되었다.

A satellite shipping container must afford the satellite a relatively benign thermal, vibration, and particle environment that is oblivious to the extreme temperatures, sand, dust, vibrations, and shock that can accompany the transportation. Korea Aerospace Research Institute has developed a new shipping container system that will be used to transport KOMPSAT-2(Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite) from Tae-jon to launch site. To verify the dynamic characteristics, a Finite Element Analysis model and a 1/3 scaled mockup of the container were developed before the fabrication of real one. After fabrication of real shipping container, experimental modal analysis was peformed to identify the dynamic characteristics. This paper presents a series of development process of KOMPSAT-2 shipping container.

Currently, container transport services play a substantial role in global cargo transportation, by serving as an intermodal between exporter and importer. Container shipping has become increasingly important over the past few decades, due to obvious advantages. However, Vietnam's container market has shown severely ongoing competition among numerous domestic and foreign shipping lines, resulting in serious consequences occurring such as freight rates substantially decreasing within the last 10 years. Vietnam's sea lanes have become more defensive, to cover losses of shipping companies. Selection of criteria for competitive evaluation of container transport companies is necessary, to facilitate addressing the problems within the enterprise, especially relating to its position in the market and from here, business management can implement strategic plans and reasonable policy, to survive and grow.

The management of liner shipping company is an extremely complex activities, especially if a company aims to simultaneously optimize the cost and service of the company's operations in a competitive environment. This paper investigates the control process of containers in a typical container liner shipping and proposes day by day operational model for empty container control in the maritime container transportation system. We proposed a linear programming model for empty container control in container liner shipping and the computational results show utilities of the model.

본 연구는 글로벌 컨테이너 해운시장의 경쟁구조 변화를 살펴보고 세가지 관점에서 우리나라 컨테이너선대 규모를 분석하였다. 경쟁구조 변화 분석에서는 시장집중도 비율과 허쉬만-허핀달 지수를 분석하였으며 선대 규모 분석에서는 첫째 얼라이언스 내 경쟁력 확보 규모, 둘째 국내 수출입 컨테이너 화물의 국적선 적취율 제고를 위한 선대규모, 셋째 주요 해운국의 특성을 고려한 패널모형을 통한 선대규모 분석 세가지 측면에서 검토하였다. 분석결과, 글로벌 컨테이너 해운시장이 과점화 되고 있는 것으로 나타났으며 현재 한국의 컨테이너 선대 규모는 세가지 분석 모두에서 부족한 것으로 분석되었다.

Recently, brand equity is paid much attention in various industries. However, container liner shipping companies are still unfamiliar with this concept, and also the brand equity model has not been tested yet in shipping context. This study, therefore, aims to measure the relative importance of brand equity factors of container liner shipping companies by employing AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process). This study concludes that perceived quality, in particular cost-related service quality, is the most influential factor of brand equity, while weak support is found for brand association. In addition to this, group comparisons were conducted between shipping companies, freight forwarders and academics. The results will be useful as they firstly define brand equity and its role in shipping context, highlighting the significance of brand management to container liner shipping firms. This evaluation is not an end in itself, but will eventually be utilised as a tool to build competitive advantage which cannot be easily imitated by competitors.

This paper addresses the design of container liner shipping service networks by explicitly taking into account empty container repositioning and container fleet size. Two key and interrelated issues of deployments of ships and containers are usually treated separately by most existing studies on shipping network design. In this paper, both issues are considered simultaneously. The problem is formulated as a two-stage problem: the upper-problem being formulated as a Knapsack problem and the lower-problem as a Flow problem. A genetic algorithm based heuristic is developed for the problem. Through a number of numerical experiments that were conducted it was shown that the problem considering empty container repositioning provides a more insightful solution than the one without.
