  • Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics of industrial accidents in shipbuilding industry. Background: As the accident frequency in shipbuilding industry is higher than those of other industries, it is important to grasp the accident characteristics of shipbuilding industry to reduce the accidents. Method: This paper aggregated some important accident report of the shipbuilding industry including industrial accident analysis of Korean government and drew some important accident characteristics of shipbuilding industry. Results: Accidents in Shipbuilding industry was reviewed in respect of accidents rate, accidents distribution by age, accidents by employed period, accidents severity, accidents type, accidents type by process, accidents caused by object, and hazards in process. Conclusion: Accident related indexes in shipbuilding were much higher than those of whole industry. Application: These results can be used to provide base information for more effective accident preventions in shipbuilding industry.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to gain an overview of the ergonomic research trends in the shipbuilding industry. Background: The number of ergonomic studies on the shipbuilding industry has increased significantly in recent years. Method: Various ergonomic papers on the shipbuilding industry have been reviewed to find ergonomic research trends. Results: The tendency observed in these studies shows that the work-related musculoskeletal disorders(WMSDs) is the most important research subject in the shipbuilding industry. Conclusion: The previous studies, focused on the physical aspects of the work, are now replaced by studies such as organizational and psychophysical studies. Application: These results can be used to provide baseline information for ergonomic research in the shipbuilding industry.

  • The Korean shipbuilding industry, which started in the 1970s with the advance of three shipbuilding companies, has been ranked as the world's largest and most successful model of the heavy and heavy chemical industry in the world since the 1990s, and has become a driving force for Korea's economic growth for several decades, including job creation and trade surplus. The domestic shipbuilding industry has won a lot of orders in favorable market environment, expanded facilities and manpower, built many ships and delivered them to shipowners, earning a lot of foreign currency and creating a 'successful myth.' However, when the global economic crisis broke out in 2008, shipbuilding in Chosun was stagnant and shipbuilding orders sharply decreased. As the facility and manpower increased in the boom period, the economy and the facilities become overcrowded as a result of the crisis, signs of a crisis in 2013 begin to appear. In 2015, three major Korean shipbuilders lost more than 6 trillion won in operating losses. Now, Korea's shipbuilding industry is facing a crisis such as massive insolvency and restructuring. Would not it have been possible to prevent the loss and restructuring of a trillion won if we recognized the recession of the global economy and understood the appropriate timing of technological innovation and prepared countermeasures against the crisis? Therefore, we analyze trends and trends of global shipbuilding industry such as Europe, China, and Japan in the competition structure of the shipbuilding industry and identify the problems of our shipbuilding industry and suggest suggestions.

  • This paper deals with the case study of the establishment of decision supporting system in shipbuilding industory. Facts or information of shipbuilding, sales, finance, production strategic planning in shipbuilding industry are considered. General transportation model for shipyard production schedule is formulated, and shipbuilding demand forecasting scheme is also introduced. This paper shows the several methods of DSS in shipbuilding industry. But production schedule strategic planning system by OR technique is emphasized. For the realization of DSS in shipbuilding industry, another efforts (data gathering and programming etc.) should be given on the basis of these methods.

  • Objectives: The objectives of this study are to discuss the importance of job stress and to introduce a model of job stress at the shipbuilding industry considering the characteristics of the shipbuilding works. Background: Shipbuilding works consist of grinding, painting, interior works, welding, and assembling and using heavy equipment in narrow space or work at outside or at high and dangerous places. The working environments aggravate the stress to the workers. Methods: Studies of job stress in industries including shipbuilding industries were reviewed and the characteristics of jobs of shipbuilding were analyzed to find causes of job stress. Results: A model was constructed based upon these findings and reviews. Conclusions: Job stress of shipbuilding workers are very high and thus job and working conditions need to be improved to attenuate the level of job stress of shipbuilding workers. Applications: This model can be used to identify the highly stressed workers and sources of stress.

  • This study presents a bottom-up approach for analyzing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the shipbuilding industry in Korea. The overall procedures for deriving GHG emissions from the Korean shipbuilding industry are presented. Based on the long-term forecast on energy demands of the Korean shipbuilding industry, reference energy system (RES) and energy balance (EB) for the shipbuilding process are derived for bottom-up modeling.

  • Although reinforcement of work intensity caused by the recent prosperity of shipbuilding businesses and the steady increasing of results which produces orders has difficulties with heavy workload, unique work circumstance in shipbuilding industry where main and subcontractor do the job together is not easy to manage its safety systematically. According to KOSHA(Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency), there were 2, 587 deaths of 95,806 disaster victims a year on average for late 6 years(2003-2008), therein 36,605 disaster victims and 646 death in manufacture where shipbuilding have 2,287 victims, 6.25% of total disaster victims and 45 deaths, 6.97%. Moreover it shows much higher accident rate in shipbuilding industry in Korea than well developed countries in this industry as Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and so it does about 3 to 10 times higher in case of death. Compared to Japan with a shipbuilding competition of orders received system, 2 times and 2.3 times higher for each and it is more than 2 times higher than accident rate of all domestic industries. These increasing of disaster result in a labor-management dispute and it is necessary that more positive efforts and investments because there occurs blind spot, neglected industry safety and health management by lack of them, Therefore this study, for the effective safety and health management of shipbuilding industry, attempts to analyze risk on kinds of ships and budget needed in safety management through classifying ships that are being made recently by three dominate major companies. For this, we carried out a survey and interview targeting experts related to shipbuilding industry and used AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) for result analysis. It is considered that cost of safety and health management will be spent more effectively on the results about risk on kinds of ships and budget needed in safety management in the study and that this study can contribute to decreasing disasters in shipbuilding industry.

  • Shipbuilding industry is one of the most influential ones in Korea. As shipbuilding industry is labor-intensive, it contributes to enhancing both local economy and national economy. Shipbuilding industry has been downsizing since the end of 2008 due to global financial crisis caused by America's sub-prime mortgage and aggravated by European countries' fiscal deficit. As a large fund is required for a single normal shipbuilding contract, fund raising is one of the most important elements in shipbuilding contract. Shipbuilding contract, requires refund guarantee in order for a buyer to reimburse the progressive payment paid to a builder. The disputes under shipbuilding contracts are mostly settled by arbitration rather than by law suit. English laws and English courts have been preferred for the choice of law as well as for the choice of forum. Due to depreciation of the ship value since the end of 2008, a number of buyers are trying to cancel the contract by raising unjust claim under the contract. Once disputes occurs regarding shipbuilding contract, a large amount of loss is inevitable. In order to mitigate the disputes arising from the shipbuilding contract, careful caution is required in drafting a shipbuilding contract.
