A number of studies have suggested that the use of high ductile and high shear materials, such as Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) and High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites (HPFRCC), significantly enhances the shear capacity of structural elements, even with/without shear reinforcements. The present study emphasizes the development of a nonlinear model of shear behaviour of a HPFRCC panel for application to the seismic retrofit of reinforced concrete buildings. To model the shear behaviour of HPFRCC panels, the original Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT) for conventional reinforced concrete panels has been newly revised for reinforced HPFRCC panels, and is referred to here as the HPFRCC-MCFT model. A series of experiments was conducted to assess the shear behaviour of HPFRCC panels subjected to pure shear, and the proposed shear model has been verified through an experiment involving panel elements under pure shear. The proposed shear model of a HPFRCC panel has been applied to the prediction of seismic retrofitted reinforced concrete buildings with in-filled HPFRCC panels. In retrofitted structures, the in-filled HPFRCC element is regarded as a shear spring element of a low-rise shear wall ignoring the flexural response, and reinforced concrete elements for beam or beam-column member are modelled by a finite plastic hinge zone model. An experimental study of reinforced concrete frames with in-filled HPFRCC panels was also carried out and the analysis model was verified with correlation studies of experimental results.
Deformational characteristics of soils, often expressed in terms of shear modulus and material damping ratios, are important parameters in the design of soil-structure systems subjected to cyclic and dynamic loadings. In this paper, deformational characteristics of dry sand at small to intermediate strains were investigated using resonant column/torsional shear(RC 175) apparatus. Both resonant column(dynamic) and torsional shear (cyclic) tests were performed in a sequential series on the same specimen. With the modification of motion monitoring system, the elastic zone, where the stress strain relationship is independent of loading cycles and strain amplitude, was veri tied and hysteretic damping was found even in this zone. At strains above cyclic threshold, shear modulus increases and damping ratio decreases with increasing number of loading cycles. Moduli and damping ratios of dry sand are independent of loading frequency and values obtained from pseudostatic torsional shear tests are Identical with the values from the dynamic resonant column test, provided the effect of number of loading cycles is considered in the conlparison. Therefore, deformational characteristics determined by RC/TS tests may be applied in both dynamic and static analyses of soil-structure systems.
The CHIME (chemical Th-U-total Pb isochron method) dating on monazite was carried out for two foliated granites from a dextral ductile shear zone in the vicinity of Gangjin area, which is considered to be a southern extension of Sunchang shear zone. The result gives emplacement age of the medium-grained biotite granite and the coarse-grained biotite granite as $183.6{\pm}2.2Ma$(MSWD=0.21) and $171.7{\pm}4.0Ma$(MSWD=0.57), respectively. Microtextures of quartz and feldspar observed in the foliated granite are almost identical with those reported in Jurassic (ca 180 Ma) foliated granites from the Imsil-Namwon area of the Sunchang shear zone, and they constraint that the ductile deformation took place at temperature condition of $300{\sim}550^{\circ}C$. Assuming cooling curves of the foliated granites in this study are similar with those of Jurassic foliated granites from Imsil-Namwon area, dextral ductile shear in the Gangjin area would take place between 172 Ma and 150 Ma, about 10 Ma later than the previous estimation based on CHIME monazite ages.
Continuous deep girders which transmit the gravity load from the upper wall to the lower columns have frequently long end shear spans between the boundary of the upper wall and the face of the lower column. This paper presents the results of tests and analyses performed on three 1:2.5 scale specimens with long end shear spans, (the ratios of shear-span/total depth: 1.8 < a/h < 2.5): one designed by the conventional approach using the beam theory and two by the strut-and-tie approach. The conclusions are as follows: (1) the yielding strength of the continuous RC deep girders is controlled by the tensile yielding of the bottom longitudinal reinforcements, being much larger than the nominal strength predicted by using the section analysis of the girder section only or using the strut-and-tie model based on elastic-analysis stress distribution. (2) The ultimate strengths are 22% to 26% larger than the yielding strength. This additional strength derives from the strain hardening of yielded reinforcements and the shear resistance due to continuity with the adjacent span. (3) The pattern of shear force flow and failure mode in shear zone varies depending on the amount of vertical shear reinforcement. And (4) it is necessary to take into account the existence of the upper wall in the analysis and design of the deep continuous transfer girders that support the upper wall with a long end shear span.
The degree of work hardening in the subsurface zones varied with the experimental conditions under the rolling contact fatigue wear test of high carbon Cr-Ti alloy steel was evaluated by the distribution of residual stresses. Surface residual stresses before the test did not affect the wear property. Surface residual stresses after the test decreased by the increase of contact stress and running. velocity. but the maximum compressive residual stress and its depth of saturation in the subsurface zone increased. The relationship between these experimental results and the distribution of the theoritical shear stress was also discussed.

Recently, there have been reported on the results that the material life is reduced by fretting conditions and the initial crack made by low stress under fretting. The purpose of this paper is to show that the results of finite element analysis for the fretting contact problems of a flat rounded punch are nearly consistent with the theoretical solutions and to research that the results about effects of the contact zone according to geometries and mechanical properties of pad.

The boundary element method was used for studying singularities of an interface crack with contact zones. The iterative procedure is applied to estimate the contact zone size. Because the contact zone size was extremely small in a tension field, a large number of Gaussian points were used for numerical integration of the Kernels. Stress extrapolation method and J-integral were used ofr determining stress intensity factors. When the interface crack was assumed to have opened tips, oscillatory singularities appear near the tips of the interface crack. But the interface crack with contact zone which Comninou suggested had no oscillatory behavior. The contact zone size under shear loading was much larger than that under tensile. The stress intensity factors computed by stress extrapolation method were close to those of Comninou's solution. And the stress intensity factor evaluated by J-integral was similar to that by stress extrapolation method.

The remote sleeve repair-welding technology using the pulsed Nd:YAG laser for increasing the lifetime of the steam generator tube in the nuclear power plant has been developed. The laser welding has many advantages on deep penetration depth and narrow heat affect zone(HAZ). The inconel 600 tube and inconel 690 sleeve used high temperature and high pressure service have been welded as round lap welds. It is found that the relation between the connection width and welding parameters. It is found that the shear strength in proportion to the connection width by conducting tensile-shear tests.
In this paper, the simple truss model was modified to predict the punching shear strength of long-span prestressed concrete (PSC) deck slabs under wheel load including the effects of transverse prestressing and long span length between girders. The strength of the compressive zone arounding punching cone was evaluated by the stiffness of inclined strut which was modified by considering aging effective modulus. The stiffness of springs which control lateral displacement of the roller supports consists of the steel reinforcement and prestressing which passed through the punching cone. Initial angle of struts was determined by the experimental observation to compensate for uncertainties in the complexities of the punching shear. The validity of computed punching shear strength by modified simple truss model was shown by comparing with experimental results and the experimental results were also compared with existing punching shear equations to determine level of predictability. The modified simple truss model appeared to better predict the punching shear strength of PSC deck slabs than other available equations. The punching shear strength, which was determined by snap-through critical load of modified simple truss model, can be used effectively to examine punching shear strength of long span PSC deck slabs.
The study deals with the development of a thermohydrodynamic (THD) computational procedure for evaluating the pressure, temperature and velocity distributions in fluid films with very rough geometry. A parametric investigation is performed to predict the bearing behaviors in the lubricating film having the absorbed layers and their interfaces determined by the rough surfaces with Gaussian distribution. The layers are expressed as functions of the standard deviations of each surface to characterize flow patterns between both the rough sur-faces. The velocity variations and the heat generation are assumed to occur in the central (shear) zone with the same bearing length and width. The coupled effect of surface roughness and shear zone dependency on hydrodynamic pressure and temperature has been found in non-contact mode. The procedure confirms the numerically determined relationship between the pressure and film gap on condition that its roughness magnitude is smaller than the fluid film thickness.
