  • An efficient and free of shear locking finite element model is developed and employed to study free vibration of tapered bidirectional functionally graded material (BFGM) beams. The beam material is assumed to be formed from four distinct constituent materials whose volume fraction continuously varies along the longitudinal and thickness directions by power-law functions. The finite element formulation based on the first-order shear deformation theory is derived by using hierarchical functions to interpolate the displacement field. In order to improve efficiency and accuracy of the formulation, the shear strain is constrained to constant and the exact variation of the cross-sectional profile is employed to compute the element stiffness and mass matrices. A comprehensive parametric study is carried out to highlight the influence of the material distribution, the taper and aspect ratios as well as the boundary conditions on the vibration characteristics. Numerical investigation reveals that the proposed model is efficient, and it is capable to evaluate the natural frequencies of BFGM beams by using a small number of the elements. It is also shown that the effect of the taper ratio on the fundamental frequency of the BFGM beams is significantly influenced by the boundary conditions. The present results are of benefit to optimum design of tapered FGM beam structures.

  • The present work is concerned with the development of new variable-node Mindlin plate bending elements. The proposed variable-node elements pass the patch tests, do not show spurious zero-energy modes, and do not produce shear locking phenomena. It is also shown that the elements produce reliable solutions through numerical tests for standard benchmark problems.

  • A new triangular element fur the finite element analysis of plate-bending problems is presented. For the purpose of sharing the program code of 4 node plate-bending element, two nodes of the 4-node element are combined to form a triangular element. Thus, the presented element would bring about great deal of efficiency of the computer program. The proposed variable-node elements pass the patch tests, do not show spurious zero-energy modes, and do not produce shear locking phenomena. It is also shown that the elements produce reliable solutions through numerical tests for standard benchmark problems.

  • This paper is concerned with formulations of the hierarchical $C^{o}$-plate element on the basis of Reissner-Mindlin plate theory. On reason for the development of the aforementioned element is that it is still difficult to construct elements based on h-version concepts which are accurate and stable against the shear locking effects. An adaptive mesh refinement and selective p-distribution of the polynomial degree using hp-version of the finite element method we proposed to verify the superior convergence and algorithmic efficiency with the help of the clamped L-shaped plate problems.s.

  • Inflatable panels made of modern and new textile materials can be inflated at high pressure to have a high mechanical strength. This paper is based on the finite element method as a general solution to determine the characteristics of deformed inflatable panels at high pressure in various end and loading conditions. Proposed method is based on the construction of weak form of formulation and application of Reduced Integration Element method (RIE) to solve the numerical problem of shear locking. The numerical results are validated as an outcome of comparison with other published results.

  • Dynamic stability of cylindrical shells subjected to follower forces is analyzed in this paper. Motion of shells is formulated in curvilinear coordinates that is consistent with assumptions made in the Timoshenko beam and the Mindlin plate. Using the finite element method, the induced equations are reduced to an equation with finite degrees of freedom. The 9-node Lagrangian element is used, and reduced integration is used to avoid shear and membrane locking. The effects of thickness ratio on the dynamic stability of cylindrical shells are studied.

  • An assumed stress quadrilateral thin/moderately thick plate element HQP4 based on the Mindlin/Reissner plate theory is proposed. The formulation is based on Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. Static and free vibration analyses of plates are carried out. Numerical examples are presented to show that the validity and efficiency of the present element for static and free vibration analysis of plates. Satisfactory accuracy for thin and moderately thick plates is obtained and it is free from shear locking for thin plate analysis.

  • In this paper, we investigate the buckling analysis of laminated composite plates, using a improved assumed natural strain shell element. In order to overcome membrane and shear locking phenomena, the assumed natural strain method is used. The eigenvalues of the laminated composite plates are calculated by varying the width-thickness ratio and angle of fiber. To improve an shell element for buckling analysis, the new combination of sampling points for assumed natural strain method was applied and the refined first-order shear deformation theory which allows the shear deformation without shear correction factor. In order to validate the present solutions, the reference solutions are used and discussed. The results of laminated composite plates under the in-plane shear loading may be the benchmark test for the buckling analysis.

  • A 4-node assumed strain finite element based on higher order shear deformation theory is developed to investigate the behaviours of symmetric and unsymmetric laminated composite plates. The present element is based on Reddy's higher order shear deformation theory so that it can consider the parabolic distribution of shear deformation through plate thickness direction. In particular, assumed strain method is adopted to alleviate the shear locking phenomena inherited plate elements based on higher order shear deformation theory. The present finite element has seven degrees of freedom per node and denoted as HSA4. Numerical examples are carried out for symmetric and unsymmetric laminated composite plate with various thickness values. Numerical results are compared with reference solutions produced by other higher order shear deformation theories.

  • In this study, an improved 8-node flat shell element is presented for the analysis of shell structure, by combining 8-node membrane element with drilling degree-of-freedom and 8-node plate bending element based on the recently presented technique. Firstly, 8-node membrane element designated as CLM8 is presented in this paper. The element has drilling degree-of.freedom in addition to transitional degree-of-freedom. Therefore the element possesses 3 degrees-of-freedom per each node which as well as the improvement of the element behavior, permits an easy connection to other element with rotational degree-of -freedom. Secondly. 8-node flat shell element was composed by adding 8-node Mindlin plate bending element to the membrane element. The behavior of the introduced plate bending element is further improved by combined use of nonconforming displacement modes, selectively reduced integration scheme and assumed shear strain fields. The element passes in the patch test, doesn't show spurious mechanism and doesn't produce shear locking phenomena. Finally, Numerical examples are presented to show the performance of flat shell element developed in the present study.
