Channels are implemented in composite beams as shear connectors in two arrangements, face to face and back to back. No relevant explanation is found in the design codes to clarify the preference of the mentioned arrangements. Besides, the designers do not have a common opinion on this subject; i.e., some recommend the face to face and others, back to back status. In this research, channel shear connectors in composite beams are studied analytically for both arrangements using ABAQUS software. For this purpose, they have been modeled in simply supported beams in the arrangements of face to face and back to back; their effects on the crack initiation load of concrete slabs were monitored. The stiffness values of composite beams were also compared in the two arrangements using force-displacement curve; the results are relatively the same in both cases. Furthermore, the effects of compressive strength of concrete, channel size, length and spacing of channels as well as steel type of channels on the performance of composite beams have been investigated. According to the results obtained in this research, the face to face status shows better performance in comparison with that of back to back, considering the load of concrete fracturing.

This study presents finite element analysis (FEA) on a Y-type perfobond rib shear connection using Abaqus software. The performance of a shear connection is evaluated by conducting a push-out test. However, in practice, it is inefficient to verify the performance by conducting a push-out test with regard to all design variables pertaining to a shear connector. To overcome this problem, FEA is conducted on various shear connectors to accurately estimate the shear strength of the Y-type perfobond rib shear connection. Previous push-out test results for 14 typical push-out test specimens and those obtained through FEA are compared to analyze the shear behavior including consideration of the design variables. The results show that the developed finite element model successfully reflects the effects of changes in the design variables. In addition, using the developed FEA model, the shear resistance of a stubby Y-type perfobond rib shear connector is evaluated based on the concrete strength and transverse rebar size variables. Then, the existing shear resistance formula is upgraded based on the FEA results.

In this paper, a hollow steel tube (HST) shear connector is proposed for use in a slim-floor system. The HST welded to a perforated steel beam web and embedded in concrete slab. A total of 10 push-out tests were conducted under static loading to investigate the mechanical behavior of the proposed HST connector. The variables were the shapes (circular, square and rectangular) and sizes of hollow steel tubes, and the compressive strength of the concrete. The failure mode was recorded as: concrete slab compressive failure under the steel tube and concrete tensile splitting failure, where no failure occurred in the HST. Test results show that the square shape HST in filled via concrete strength 40 MPa carried the highest shear load value, showing three times more than the reference specimens. It also recorded less slip behavior, and less compressive failure mode in concrete underneath the square hollow connector in comparison with the circular and rectangular HST connectors in both concrete strengths. The rectangular HST shows a 20% higher shear resistance with a longer width in the load direction in comparison with that in the smaller dimension. The energy absorption capacity values showed 23% and 18% improvements with the square HST rather than a headed shear stud when embedded in concrete strengths of 25 MPa and 40 MPa, respectively. Moreover, an analytical method was proposed and predicts the shear resistance of the HST shear connectors with a standard deviation of 0.14 considering the shape and size of the connectors.

The factors affecting the shear strength of the angle shear connectors in the steel-concrete composite beams can play an important role to estimate the efficacy of a composite beam. Therefore, the current study has aimed to verify the output of shear capacity of angle shear connector according to the input provided by Support Vector Machine (SVM) coupled with Firefly Algorithm (FFA). SVM parameters have been optimized through the use of FFA, while genetic programming (GP) and artificial neural networks (ANN) have been applied to estimate and predict the SVM-FFA models' results. Following these results, GP and ANN have been applied to develop the prediction accuracy and generalization capability of SVM-FFA. Therefore, SVM-FFA could be performed as a novel model with predictive strategy in the shear capacity estimation of angle shear connectors. According to the results, the Firefly algorithm has produced a generalized performance and be learnt faster than the conventional learning algorithms.
The results and interpretations of push-out tests on shear connector devices for composite bridges carried out in this study are presented. The devices under investigations are headed studes, perfobond rib, ㄱtype perfobond rib, T- Connector and a new type of shear connector called T type perfobond rib. This new connector is flat steel plate with a number of holes punched through. The results obtained indicate that the T type perfobond rib shear connectors exhibit adequate ductility and substantially higher capacities. Therefore for composite beams utilizing reinforced concrete slabs, the T type perfobond rib shear connectors is a viable alternative to the headed studs.
Green Frame is a column-beam system constructed by composite precast column and beam connected by embedded steel of their. From when the precast concrete beam of Green Frame is installed, until the concrete of slab and connection joint is cured, the self load of beam shall be supported by the embedded steel of it. Therefore, the concrete of beam could be separated from the embedded steel if the shear connector of beam of Green Frame is designed by the code on Structural standard. So, this study suggest an equation for the shear connection of composite precast concrete beams of Green Frame. The result of this study will be used as the main equation of the calculation model for shear connectors of composite precast concrete beams.
Composite beam, which combined the material characteristic of the steel and concrete, has been widely used in the construction of various building and bridge system. For the effective application of the composite beam, the composite action on the composite interface between the concrete element and the steel element should be achieved by shear connectors. The behavioral characteristics of composite beam are related with the degree of interaction and the degree of shear connection according to the shear strength and shear stiffness of the stud shear connectors. These two concepts are also affected by the number of installed shear connector and the strength of composite materials. In this study, experimental and analytical evaluations of the degree of shear connection affected by stud diameter were conducted, and the relationship between structural behavior and the degree of shear connection was verified. The very small difference among the ultimate loads of the specimens depending on the change of the degree of connection was possibly because of the dependence of the ultimate load on the characteristic of plastic moment of the composite beam.
