  • In this paper, a new CIC filter structure for reduction of passband droop in CIC decimation filter is proposed. For improvement of passband characteristics, the 1st order Generalized Comb Filter(UF) is proposed in addition to the conventional CIC decimation filter. By using this filter, it is shown that passband droop is remarkably reduced and aliasing attenuation is slightly increased. We also propose how to find the optimum filter coefficient Furthermora, it is shown that choices for GCF are possible in terms of the number of Half-Band filter. Passband droops and aliasing attenuations of the proposed structure are compared with those of the CIC structures using conventional sharpening techniques.

  • This paper presents a double-sharpened decimation filter based on the application of a Kaiser and Hamming sharpening technique for multistandard wireless systems. The proposed double-sharpened decimation filter uses a pre-droop compensator which improves the passband response of a conventional cascaded integrator-comb filter so that it provides an efficient sharpening performance at half-speed with comparison to conventional sharpened filters. In this paper, the passband droop characteristics with compensation provides -1.6 dB for 1.25 MHz, -1.4 dB for 2.5 MHz, -1.3 dB for 5 MHz, and -1.0 dB for 10 MHz bandwidths, respectively. These results demonstrate that the proposed double-sharpened decimation filter is suitable for multistandard wireless applications.

  • In this paper, we proposed image enhancement method using sharpening filter for improving the accuracy of object detection using the existing Grabcut algorithm. GrabCut algorithm is the excellent performance extracting an object within a rectangular window range, but it has the drawback of the inferior performance in image with no clear distinction between background and objects. So, in this paper, reinforcing the brightness and clarity through histogram equalization, and tightening the border of the object using the sharpening filter look better than that extracted result of existing GrabCut algorithm in a similar image of the object and the background. Based on improved Grabcut algorithm, it is possible to obtain an improved result in the image processing convergence technique of character recognition, real-time object tracking and so on.

  • To resolve the problems of Poisson/impulse noise, blurriness, and sharpness in degraded X-ray images, a novel and efficient enhancement algorithm based on X-ray image fusion using a discrete wavelet transform is proposed in this paper. The proposed algorithm consists of two basics. First, it applies the techniques of boundary division to detect Poisson and impulse noise corrupted pixels and then uses the Wiener filter approach to restore those corrupted pixels. Second, it applies the sharpening technique to the same degraded X-ray image. Thus, it has two source X-ray images, which individually preserve the enhancement effects. The details and approximations of these sources X-ray images are fused via different fusion rules in the wavelet domain. The results of the experiment show that the proposed algorithm successfully combines the merits of the Wiener filter and sharpening and achieves a significant proficiency in the enhancement of degraded X-ray images exhibiting Poisson noise, blurriness, and edge details.

  • Purpose: This study examined the influence of a metal artifact reduction (MAR) tool, sharpening filters, and their combination on the diagnosis of vertical root fracture (VRF) in teeth with metallic posts using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: Twenty single-rooted human premolars - 9 with VRF and 11 without - were individually placed in a human mandible. A metallic post composed of a cobalt-chromium alloy was inserted into the root canal of each tooth. CBCT scans were then acquired under the following parameters: 8 mA, a 5×5 cm field of view, a voxel size of 0.085 mm, 90 kVp, and with MAR either enabled or disabled. Five oral and maxillofacial radiologists independently evaluated the CBCT exams under each MAR mode and across 3 sharpening filter conditions: no filter, Sharpen 1×, and Sharpen 2×. The diagnostic performance was quantified by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity. These metrics were compared using 2-way analysis of variance with a significance level of α=5%. Intra- and inter-examiner agreement were assessed using the weighted kappa test. Results: Neither MAR nor the application of sharpening filters significantly impacted AUC or specificity (P>0.05). However, sensitivity increased when MAR was combined with Sharpen 1× and Sharpen 2× (P=0.015). The intra-examiner agreement ranged from fair to substantial (0.34-0.66), while the inter-examiner agreement ranged from fair to moderate (0.27-0.41). Conclusion: MAR in conjunction with sharpening filters improved VRF detection; therefore, their combined use is recommended in cases of suspected VRF.

  • DBS(Doppler Beam Sharpening) algorithm is a way to improve azimuth resolution performance in radar. Since DBS image includes the is information about the search area of radar, various clutter components exist besides the target to be detected. To detect and track the desired target in a DBS image, it must be able to identify a target and the clutter components. In this paper, we describe how to use image size and terrain information(DTED) to identify the target in a DBS image. By using morphological filter and chain code, it acquires image size and excludes the clutter components. By matching with DTED, we determine target.

  • This paper proposes a composite filter for noise reduction of image. To improve the image quality by reducing the noise in the liver ultrasound image, we tried to help the accurate image analysis. In the experiment, the top seven composite filters were selected by combining the Gaussian blur filter, the sharpening filter, and the median filter using the ATS-539 ultrasonic phantom, and applied to the ultrasound image in which this was done. As a result, it was found that the values of SNR, CNR and MSR all increased when the top seven composite filters were applied. In addition, PSNR of more than 30 dB, close to SSIM 1 showed that the image loss rate is small. Therefore, the appropriate application of the proposed composite filter in this research will be useful for accurate video reading and analysis.

  • In this paper, adaptive unsharp masking using bilateral filter, edge-preserving smoothing filter is proposed to reduce the overshoot and jagging artifact in sharpening images. Previous image enhancement methods including unsharp masking(UM) can emphasize high-frequency details strongly, but often cause several artifacts such as overshooting, noise, jagging and so on. Proposed image enhancement method preserves edges well because of using bilateral filter and sensitively controls a weight according to edge's directions. Therefore, it enhances sharpness and effectively reduces overshoot and jagging artifacts. Simulation results comparing output of previous AUM with proposed method show that proposed algorithm makes images properly enhanced, and we know that overshoot and jagging artifacts are many reduced.
