  • The objective of this paper is to provide an improved reorder decision policy for general multi-echelon distribution systems utilizing the shared stock information. It has been known that traditional reorder policies sometimes show poor performance in distribution systems. Thus, in our previous research we introduced the order risk policy which utilizes the shared stock information more accurately for the 2- echelon distribution system and proved the optimality. However, since the real world supply chain is generally composed with more than 2 echelons, we extend the order risk policy for the general multi-echelon systems. Since the calculation of the exact order risk value for general multi-echelon systems is very complex, we provide two approximation methods for the real-time calculation. Through the computational experiment comparing the order risk policy with the existing policies under various conditions, we show the performance of the order risk policy and analyze the value of the shared stock information varying with the characteristics of the supply chain.

  • Purpose Virtual communities change the way people communicate and share information. The purpose of this paper is to find how internet social capital and individual motivations influence the information sharing in virtual communities. This study considers the social capital theory, individual motivations, information sharing, and community promotion to construct a theoretical model. Design/methodology/approach Social capital focuses on three dimensions that include 6 factors: social interaction ties, centrality, shared language, shared vision, trust and reciprocity. Individual motivations include 2 factors: reputation and enjoy helping. To confirm the research model and the hypotheses, 426 effective questionnaires were used for the final analysis. Findings The result of data analysis demonstrates that social interaction ties, centrality, shared language, trust, and reciprocity were significant in affecting information sharing behaviors. However, reputation, enjoy helping, and shared vision does not appear to have a significant influence on information sharing behaviors. The information sharing was positively related to community promotion.

  • Recently, researches on the shared authentication based on single sign-on have been actively performed so as to solve the problems of current service provider-centric and isolated Internet authentications, including low usability, high cost structure, and difficulty in privacy protection. In order for the shared authentication model, where the authentications of an authentication provider are shared by several Internet service providers, to be accepted in real Internet environment, trustworthiness among users, service providers, and authentication providers on the level of authentication assurance and the level of authentication information protection is necessarily required. This paper proposes a framework for trustworthy and privacy-protected shared authentication protocol based on the user-centric operation and open trust provider network. The proposed framework is differentiated from previous works in the points that it is able to provide interoperable shared authentication services on the basis of open trust infrastructure.

  • Recently, a lot of general-purpose application programs in addition to graphic applications have been parallelized for boosting their performance using Graphic Processing Unit (GPU)'s excellent floating-point performance. In order to maximize the application performance on GPUs, optimizing the memory hierarchy and the on-chip caches such as the shared memory is essential. In this paper, we propose techniques to optimize the shared memory, and verify its effectiveness using a pattern matching application program.

  • In today's fashion industry, directions for new products and high value added of fashion goods, product changes according to cycles, the shortening of life cycles, added value, planned obsolescence, and presentation is focused on fashion trends that will be selected by many consumers at the point of selling time. Therefore fashion information poses great importance and its weight is growing bigger everyday. Fashion information recognized to be important is reflected practically in the prediction of fashion changes in the fashion industry; especially, it is the first stage of the merchandising process that is the course of new product development. Presently, with some differences according to the size and specialized area of a firm, domestic fashion menufacturers obtain information from sales data of competing brands and their own, market information, consumer information based on primary data, shared fashion trend information given by domestic fashion information providing companies. Firms can not produce differentiated images and product concepts using such shared information. Although the types, importance and reflection of used information vary according to merchandising processes, all experts engaging in the merchandising of fashion products use the same shared information.

  • The web-based group collaborative systems are emerging as enterprise-wide information systems. Since data in group collaborative systems are apt to be shared among multiple concurrent users and modified simutaneously by them, the web-based group collaborative systems must support synchronous collaboration in order to provide users with synchronized and consistent views of shared data. This paper proposes an active web server which can facilitate synchronous collaboration in web-based group collaborative systems. To accomplish such a goal, the active web server manages dependency relationships between shared data and web browsers referencing them and actively propagates changing details of the shared data to all web browsers referencing them. And, this paper examines usefullness and effectiveness of the active web server to apply it to the ball-bearing design example of concurrent engineering design systems. The prototype system of the active web server is developed on a commercial Object-oriented Database Management System (ODBMS) called OBJECTSTORE using the C++ programming language.

  • There are many situations arising in reliability engineering and biomedical science where failure of a subsystem increases the failure rate of other subsystem under shared load models. In this paper, the maximum likelihood estimates and the modified maximum likelihood estimates of mean time to failure and reliability function for shared load model with guarantee time are obtained by using censored system life data. Some illustrative examples are included.

  • For the efficient co-authoring of multimedia documents in a distributed systems environment, the cooperative-work management systems that can not only allow the sharing of distributed resources but also facilitate the authors' interaction, are needed. In this paper, we present a cooperative-work management system with hybrid architecture, called CW-MAN, in which the information on shared objects and co-authoring management is stored in a dedicated computer system but the shared objects distributed all over the local computer systems. The main management functions provided by the CW-MAN are those for shared objects, session, and telepointing. The shared-object use them exclusively. The session managements allows authors to dynamically create, update, and destroy sessions. Lastly, the telepointing management allows local pointing events to be synchronously presented to remote systems.
