Ultimate strength of stiffened plates with pitting corrosion

  • Predicting residual strength of corroded plates is of crucial importance for service life estimation of aged structures. A series of nonlinear finite element method is employed for ultimate strength analysis of stiffened plates with pitting corrosion. Influential parameters, including plate thickness, type and size of stiffeners, pit depth and degree of pitting are varied and more than 208 finite element models are analyzed. It is found that ultimate strength is reduced by increasing pit depth to thickness ratio. Thin and intermediate plates have minimum and maximum reduction of ultimate strength with stronger stiffeners, respectively. In weak stiffener, reduction of ultimate strength in thin and intermediate plates depends on DOP. Reduction of ultimate strength in thick plates depends on thickness of plate and DOP. For intermediate plates, reduction for all stiffeners regardless of shape and size are the same.

Improvement Design Method for Vibration Reduction of Tractor Fender (트랙터 펜더의 진동저감을 위한 개선설계 방법)

  • In this study, an improvement design method for reducing the vibration of fenders equipped in a tractor is proposed through the establishment of a finite element model and the topology optimization. As the original shapes of the parts cannot be altered, an improved design model was derived in which a stiffener was attached to the border of parts. Thus, the first resonance frequency was increased by approximately 16 Hz, which was confirmed to be the frequency interval for avoiding the idle and operating frequency of the engine. Finally the improved design model was applied to confirm the effect of vibration reduction. Therefore, it can be concluded that the improved design model of the tractor fender is effective at reducing vibrations of the tractor fender.

  • Generally, Web & Flange of I shape beam are composed of plane for optimization of measurement in investigating the behavior resistant to horizontal force and bending moment on large section Therefore, longitudinally traperzoidal web section beam has an important function as a body for carrying more load and ensuring more support area. There is only a limited usefulness for analyzing the behavior of web section with opening. It is experimentally verified that this traperzoidal web section has a good resistant caopacity. conclustions on the above research results are as follows : 1) resistant capacity on the above can be more 15% increased than normal case 2) stiffener welding work and complexity of shopdrawing can be excluded in advance 3) traperzoidal section can be applied in structural practice.

  • In this study, fiber orientation of stiffener was conducted to increase buckling load or failure load in each case with a different design value and a different objective function for stiffened laminated composite panel of I-type under compression loading. Regarding each of buckling load or failure load as objective function, optimum design was carried out. In respect of optimum design, it was investigated that optimum shape for buckling could improve fail load for postbuckling, because it was difficult to investigate the optimization of postbuckling which need long analysis times for nonlinear analysis.

  • In this paper, the efficient layout method for generating common and continuous cutting path of flat-bar profile. The ‘flat -bar’ is a stiffener and has long rectangular shape. This paper describes a fast nesting algorithm of the flat-bar, and a procedure to generate cutting path of gas/plasma torch, which is operated by a NC (numerically controlled) gas/plasma cutting machine. By using this common and continuous path, the machining-time for cutting and the maintenance-cost of plasma-torch could be reduced. Proposed procedures are written in C-language and applied to the Interactive Flat-Bar-Nesting System executable on Open VMS with X-Window system.

  • Optimal design of panel with trapezoidal type stiffeners was studied using linear and nonlinear deformation theories. Also analysis method was using closed-form analysis and finite difference energy methods, respectively. Various bucking load factors are obatined for stiffened laminated composite panel with trapezoidal type stiffeners and various aspect ratios, which are made from Carbon/Epoxy USN 125 prepreg and are simply-supported on four edges under uniaxial compression. Optimal design analyses are carried out by the nonlinear search optimizer, ADS.

  • 보강평판은 평판에 각종 보강재를 용접등의 방법에 의해서 종방향, 횡방향, 경사 또는 임의의 방향으로 부착시켜 굽힘 및 비틀림 강성을 향상시킨 구조요소이다. 이러한 구조요소는 구조적 필요성이나 경량화 설계에 따라 선박의 deck, 철도 차량, 항공기 및 자동차 등의 각종 구조물에서 부하능력 및 경제성을 증대시키기 위하여 널리 사용되고 있고, 또한 자동차용 오일팬, 가전기기의 케이싱과 모터의 케이싱등에도 사용되고 있다. 최근 현장에서는 이러한 구조물의 진동 감소 및 방진 문제가 큰 관심사가 되고 있다. 본 논문은 정사각형 알루미늄 평판에 +자 형태의 Box Beam 보강재를 편면 보강하고 4변 자유단의 경계 조건을 설정하였다. 보강재는 유한요소 정식화 과정을 통하여 평판 요소에 등가시키고, 2차원의 평판 구조로 보강 평판을 모델링하고 구조해석 프로그램인 ANSYS를 이용하여 해석하였다. 실험은 Impact Test에 의해서 주파수 응답 함수(FRF)를 각 시편에 대해서 구하고 이를 해석의 고유진동수와 비교하였다. 그리고 보강재가 임의의 각도로 평판에 부착되었을 때 고유진동수의 변화와 진동 모드(mode shape)를 분석하였다.

A Study on the Geometric Parameters that Influence the Trapezoidally Corrugated Webs Under Partial Edge Loading (제형파형강판의 지압 거동에 영향을 미치는 기하학적 인자에 관한 연구)

  • The corrugated web is a plate that was manufactured with a corrugated shape. It is widely used in bridges, buildings, and culverts. A girder with a corrugated web can be crippled by local, in-plane compressive loads. Due to its high out-of-plane strength, however, a stiffener is usually not needed in trapezoidally corrugated plates, and the corrugated profile of the web can change the boundary condition of the edge load. Some researchers have studied the strength of the partial-edge loading of the trapezoidally corrugated web, but they have not considered the profile of corrugation in their studies. This paper investigates the influence of the corrugate profile. A parametric study was conducted on the shape parameter using the finite-element method. In this parametric study, the relationship between the corrugated shape and the partial-edge strength was also investigated by dividing the partial-edge strength into the web capacity and the flange capacity.

  • This paper presents the design, fabrication and performance of a reinforced concrete beam strengthened by GFRP box plate and its possibility for structural rehabilitations. The load capacity, ductility and failure mode of reinforced concrete structures strengthened by FRP box plate were investigated and compared with traditional FRP plate strengthening method. This is intended to assess the feasibility of using FRP box plate for repair and strengthening of damaged RC beams. A series of four-point bending tests were conducted on RC beams with or without strengthening FRP systems the influence of concrete cover thickness on the performance of overall stiffness of the structure. The parameters obtained by the experimental studies were the stiffness, strength, crack width and pattern, failure mode, respectively. The test yielded complete load-deflection curves from which the increase in load capacity and the failure mode was evaluated.

Shear behavior of short square tubed steel reinforced concrete columns with high-strength concrete

  • Six shear-critical square tubed steel reinforced concrete (TSRC) columns using the high-strength concrete ($f_{cu,150}=86.6MPa$) were tested under constant axial and lateral cyclic loads. The height-to-depth ratio of the short column specimens was specified as 2.6, and the axial load ratio and the number of shear studs on the steel shape were considered as two main parameters. The shear failure mode of short square TSRC columns was observed from the test. The steel tube with diagonal stiffener plates provided effective confinement to the concrete core, while welding shear studs on the steel section appeared not significantly enhancing the seismic behavior of short square TRSC columns. Specimens with higher axial load ratio showed higher lateral stiffness and shear strength but worse ductility. A modified ACI design method is proposed to calculate the nominal shear strength, which agrees well with the test database containing ten short square TSRC columns with shear failure mode from this study and other related literature.
