The purpose of study was that the functional gains achieved by stroke patients after rehabilitation in the acute phase have been documented. Sixty stroke inpatients who were at least 3.57 month postonset participated;32 males and 28 females;mean age, 57.4 years. By the classification of diagnosis, 20 subjects were cerebral infarction and 27 subjects were cerebral hemorrhage. Activities of daily living(ADL) performance was investigated using the Klein-Bell ADL Scale. ADL test was practiced within physical therapy room. The outcome variables were first analyzed using frequency statistics. The functional gains of the patients with sex and hemiplegic site were then using an ANOVA. Mean score of dressing, elimination, mobility, bathing/hygiene, eating, and telephone use, 26.6, 56.0, 41.4, 36.5, 82.0, and 56.7. Mean score of total, 43.0. There was no significant difference in sex and hemiplegic site.
The purpose of this study was to contribute to the relatively neglected area of out -patient satisfaction with physical therapy service by measuring and determining the factors affecting patient satisfaction in the Andong region. One hundred and forty-five subjects (81 males and 64 females) at 11 facilities with a mean age of 39.2 years (SD=16.2) responded to the satisfaction questionnaire. Each questionnaire contained a set of demographic questions and 19 patient satisfaction items. Cronbach's alpha test of reliability was used as the measure of internal consistency . The satisfaction scale had a good reliability coefficient : Cronbach's alpha=.8688. The average satisfaction score (minimum score=19, maximum score=95) was 75.4 ranging from 38 to 90. Respondent variables including sex, education, marital status, religion, medical security, average monthly income, and number of physical therapy out-patient department treatment visits were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, and ANCOVA. Satisfaction with the service was largely unrelated to mallets of sex, education, occupation, or other demographic variables. However, marital status, age, average monthly income, and number of treatment visits in the out-patient department were significantly related to patient satisfaction. The analysis presented here could be replicatied with a larger sample in other areas. Other factors such as physical therapist availability, physical therapist competence, accessibility, waiting time, and atmosphere of the treatment area should be considered in further studies.
This study is about the correlation of pain strength between Oswestry Disability Index and Hendler 10-Minute Screening Test in the patient of low back pain. Globally, esophageal cancer is the seventh most common cancer, and the male-to-female ratio in esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) is significantly imbalanced at 4:1 to 8:1. Obesity, reflux, and smoking are known risk factors for this sex difference; however, fully explaining this remains challenging. Studies have investigated the link between exogenous sex hormones and esophageal cancer occurrence. A meta-analysis revealed a lower risk of EAC in female who had undergone hormone replacement therapy. Androgen-deprivation therapy in patients with prostate cancer was associated with a decreased risk of EAC. Tissue-based studies have reported varied results regarding the relationship between estrogen receptor expression and survival in female patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Circulating hormone studies have suggested that higher testosterone and luteinizing hormone levels decreased EAC risk in men, and free testosterone was inversely correlated in female with ESCC. However, a high androgen-estrogen ratio in male patients with EAC was linked to increased odds of EAC. Sex hormones influence carcinogenesis, affecting cell proliferation, differentiation, metabolism, inflammation, and cell death. The studies were limited by the small sample size and varying hormone measurement methods; thus, future studies with definitive conclusions on the association between esophageal cancer and sex hormones are warranted.
The purpose of this study is to apply a probation and tea culture therapy convergence program developed for the self-esteem improvement and recidivism prevention of sex offenders supervised by GPS electronic monitoring(wearing electronic anklet). After applying the tea culture therapy program, this study examines the effect of the program on the self-esteem improvement of sex offenders with electronic anklet. This study employs an integrative approach of qualitative and quantitative methods. It was shown from the qualitative analysis that the participants have considerably more positive attitudes, active participation, seriousness in interpersonal relationship, anger management, and sympathy after the program. The results from quantitative analysis indicate that the self-esteem of participants are significantly improved.
The incidence and mortality of various cancers are associated with sex-specific disparities. Sex differences in cancer epidemiology are one of the most significant findings. Men are more prone to die from cancer, particularly hematological malignancies. Sex difference in cancer incidence is attributed to regulation at the genetic/molecular level and sex hormones such as estrogen. At the genetic/molecular level, gene polymorphism and altered enzymes involving drug metabolism generate differences in cancer incidence between men and women. Sex hormones modulate gene expression in various cancers. Genetic or hormonal differences between men and women determine the effect of chemotherapy. Until today, animal studies and clinical trials investigating chemotherapy showed sex imbalance. Chemotherapy has been used without consideration of sex differences, resulting in disparity of efficacy and toxicity between sexes. Based on accumulating evidence supporting sex differences in chemotherapy, all clinical trials in cancer must incorporate sex differences for a better understanding of biological differences between men and women. In the present review, we summarized the sex differences in (1) incidence and mortality of cancer, (2) genetic and molecular basis of cancer, (3) sex hormones in cancer incidence, and (4) efficacy and toxicity of chemotherapy. This review provides useful information for sex-based chemotherapy and development of personalized therapeutic strategies against cancer.
Objective : To evaluate the pain improvement of the lumbago patients taken the electro-acupuncture therapy using Visual Analogue Scale. Methods : The 25 patients of 46 lumbago patients visited department of Acupuncture & Moxibustion in National Medical Center from 1st March to 20th August had taken the electro-acupucture therapy more than 5 times. We checked on their age, sex, onset, radiating pain, back pain past history and Straight Leg Raising test. And we evaluated their improvement of back pain using Visual Analog Scale(VAS) at each visit. Then we analyzed the pain improvement by their age, sex, onset, radiating pain, back pain past history, Straight Leg Raising test, visiting frequency and Visual Analog Scale on 1st visit(VAS1) Results : VAS of 24 patients has improved and VAS of one patient has not been changed. There's no patient getting worse. The women and the positive group at SLR Test had better result of pain improvement. Conclusion : The lumbago patients taken electro-acupuncture more than 5 times showed significantly different pattern of pain improvement according to the sex and the SLR test.
Purpose: The purpose of this study were to analyze fatigue patterns of the rectus femoris muscle by isometric contraction. Methods: Twenty healthy subjects(10 male, 10 female) participated in this study. Maximal voluntary isometric contraction(MVIC) was measured by the dynamometer. Muscle activity was recorded from the rectus femoris muscle. During the experiment, the subject was seated in the chair. The measured items, median frequency(MDF) and root mean square (RMS), were collected from the surface EMG. All data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA. Results: There was significant difference of MVIC between male and female. Endurance time was significant difference by the level of MVIC but no significant in the main effect(sex) and interaction effect. The MDF and fatigue index were significant differences in the interaction effect. The RMS was not significant difference in both of main and interaction effect. The muscle fatigue patterns of female was greater than male after 60% MVIC. Conclusion: This study showed that sex differences of muscle fatigue were started from 60% MVIC.
