  • Fruit borers such as Grapholita molesta, G. dimorpha and Carposina sasakii are major pests of plum in Korea. Population densities and seasonal occurrence were monitored using the synthetic sex pheromone trap in Uiseong and Gyeongsan, two important major plum growing area in Korea. In 2010 and 2011, adults of G. molesta were caught from mid April with the peak of late April, and then undergone three more generations in Gyeongsan. Grapholita dimorpha appeared from late April and they showed three peaks until late September. Both Grapholita species occurred a few days later in Uiseong than in Gyeongsan where the latitude is $1^{\circ}$ lower. There was no difference of the phenological occurrence of C. sasakii between Gyeongsan and Uiseong, showing the same patterns of two or three peaks. Population size was in order of G. molesta, G. dimorpha and C. sasakii with 63:16:20 and 47:35:18 in Gyeongsan and 51:18:31 and 46:13:36 in Uiseong, in 2010 and 2011 respectively. There was no difference between the numbers of Grapholita species caught in the trap installed inside and outside of the orchards.

  • This study was performed to monitor the seasonal occurrence of Pseudococcus comstocki (Kuwana) by using pheromone traps and to test a mating disruption technique to control this pest in pear orchards. We compared the attractiveness of rubber septa loaded with 1.5 and 3.0 mg of the pheromone, 2,6-dimethyl-1,5-heptadien-3-yl acetate. A total of 1,021 and 1,431 males were caught in traps baited with 1.5 mg and 3 mg of the pheromone, respectively. The numbers of males caught were not affected by trap color, although yellow traps were more attractive than white traps. In 2012, P. comstocki males were captured between June and October, with peaks in late June, early August, and late September. In 2013, the males were trapped between June and October, with peaks in middle June, late July, and late September. In pheromone mating disruption tests, catches were reduced by 17.7, 65.3, and 62.9% in orchards treated with 450, 900, and 1,350 mg per 10 a of the pheromone, respectively. At harvest, 3.4, 2.9, and 4.8% of fruits in orchards treated with 450, 900, and 1,350 mg per 10 a were damaged by P. comstocki, while 9.5% were damaged in the control orchard.

  • The female sex pheromone of the peach leafminer, Lyonetia clerkella Linne (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae), was analyzed by coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detector (GC-EAD). GC-EAD analyses of pheromone gland extract revealed a single compound that elicited responses from male antennae. Retention time on DB-1 column of EAD-active compound was identical to that of synthetic (145)-14-Methyl-1-octadecene (14Sme-1-18Hy). In field tests, sticky traps baited with synthetic 14Sme-1-18Hy alone were highly attractive to male. Traps with 0.1 mg dose showed the lowest catches, but there were no significant difference in the numbers of moth caught in traps baited with doses of 0.5 and 1.0 mg. The results of the field assays for longevity of pheromone traps showed that effectiveness of lures maintained for at least 8 weeks under field condition. The attractiveness of 14Sme-1-18Hy was not affected by the addition of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) in lures as an antioxidant. Traps baited with 0.5 mg 14Sme-1-18Hy were successfully used to monitor L. clerkella male flights. Analysis of seasonal trap catches over two years showed that moth flight activity in peach orchards occurred over a period of seven months with six generations in Suwon.

  • In this study, two commercial mating disruptors were compared in terms of disruption of Oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta, male orientation, in which a new dispenser type, $SPLAT^{(R)}$, was compared with a current dispenser type, $Isomate^{(R)}$-M ROSSO. For this assessment, the last three year field monitoring data were analyzed for the efficacy of Isomate type dispenser. Then two commercial dispensers were compared in different localities with sub-locality replications during identical monitoring period from mid February to late August. There appeared to be four adult population peaks, in which the overwintering population size was positively correlated with the following reproductive population sizes. Isomate type dispenser effectively suppressed G. molesta populations during all growing seasons with some annual variation in its efficacy. Between two dispensers, SPLAT type was much effective. The difference in their efficacy may be caused by the difference in composition of major pheromone component.

  • To identity the composition and ratio of the sex pheromone in the asiatic leafroller, Archippus breviplicanus (Walsingham), which is a major pest on apple leaves, and to develop a monitoring system using this sex pheromone, abdominal tips of their virgin female during the calling period were extracted and analysed. The GC/GC-MS analysis revealed the following three compounds; (E)11-tetradecenyl acetate (E11-14: Ac), (Z)11-tetradecenyl acetate (Z11-14: Ac), and tetradecyl acetate(14: Ac) with the ratio of 56:22:22. Electroantennogram (EAG) assay was also conducted to examine biological activity of the components. The three components evoked significantly higher responses than hexane or air but there was no significant differences between the mixtures made by components. Field trapping experiments for determining the optimum blend, seasonal fluctuation and the optimum amount for male attracting were carried out over 4 years from 1997 to 2000. Although male moths were attracted to 8:2 and 7:3 between E11-14: Ac and Z11-14: Ac, their 7:3 blend was found to be the most effective. Archippus breviplicanus appears to occur three times a year in Korea. The optimum amount for monitoring was found to be 1mg per trap. 14: Ac, the third component, did not show synergistic effect on male moth attraction.

  • Three sex pheromone components (cis-8-dodecenyl acetate (Z12Ac), trans-8-dodecenyl acetate (E12Ac), cis-8-dodecenol (Z12OH)) of the Oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta, were chemically synthesized. Especially to increase the composition of cis-stereoisomer, a triple bond intermediate was hydrogenated at $-20^{\circ}C$ with catalytic $Pd/BaSO_{4}$. The resulting product consisted of the acetates with a stereoisomer ratio in 92:8 (Z:E). The biological activity of the synthesized pheromone compounds was analyzed both in male responses and orientation disruption. The indoor pheromone effect was determined by male flight behavior showing wing movement in response to lure. Different mixtures of the synthetic pheromone components were prepared by mixing acetate and alcohol components in 100:0, 99:1, and 90:10 (g/g) and tested with a comparison of a standard commercial pheromone lure. The highest pheromone effect was observed in only acetate mixture (100:0) and the effect was reduced with the addition of the alcohol component. This indoor pheromone effect could be observed in field monitoring trial, in which 100:0 mixture showed the highest trap catches. Orientation disruption assay was conducted indoor by using a cage, in which the center had a commercial lure on sticky plate and the four candidates were placed at 6 cm away from the central lure on each of four directions. Test males were released to the arena during overnight (12 h) and then the caught males on the sticky plate were counted. The synthesized pheromone as well as the commercial pheromone showed 100% orientation disruption. However, the orientation disruption effect was reduced with decrease in the number of the surrounding disrupting pheromone baits. These results clearly suggest that the synthesized sex pheromone of G. molesta is biologically active and can be used for field mating disruption.

  • In this study, we aimed to investigate the changes in the catch rate of Monochamus saltuarius, based on sexual maturation by using aggregation-sex pheromone traps. Ovariole development of caught M. saltuarius females was compared to that of the ones not caught using traps. In a mesh cage set up at the Hongneung experimental forest, we placed a multi-funnel trap with or without an aggregation-sex pheromone lure. M. saltuarius adults, which emerged from pine logs, were grouped in four according to the emergence dates (0, 1, 7, and 10 days after emergence [DAE]). We released beetles into the mesh cage to investigate the catch rate using the traps. In each group, a total of 80 beetles (20 beetles × 4 replications) were tested, making it a total of 320 beetles. Among the four groups, M. saltuarius adults in the 7 DAE group were caught more frequently using the traps, especially with a pheromone lure; the other groups showed a low catch rate. A similar number of female and male beetles were caught using the traps. Regarding ovariole development, all the female adults in the 0 and 1 DAE groups were immature, while those in the other two groups were completely developed. Therefore, aggregation-sex pheromone traps might have a limitation in the prevention of pine wilt disease because of the transmission of pine wood nematode during maturation feeding of newly emerged M. saltuarius adults. However, aggregation-sex pheromone traps can be effective for collecting sexually mature M. saltuarius adults, for the investigation of seasonal occurrence of beetles in forests.

  • The peach pyralid moth (Dichocrocis punctiferalis) is reported as import ant pest insect to chestnut fruits in Asia including Korea. For seasonal occurrence of D. punctiferalis in 1996, 1998 and 1999, D. punctiferalis adults were collected by light trap and sex pheromone wing trap in the chestnut orchard. Also, damaged rate of chestnut fruits were examined each collecting site. In 1996, according to examination by using light trap at three different site in Kongju, the occurrence peak of 2nd gene ration of D. punctiferalis adults was early August. Collected individuals after September were cons ide red as 3rd generation. Damaged rate due to maturation type was 26.5% averagely. The order of damaged rate were early, late and middle maturation type as 35.04%, 19.35% and 26.03%, respectively. Using synthetic sex pheromone trap at Kongju, Cheungyang and Buyeo in 1998, occurrence peaks were occurred mid-August to 2nd generation and late September to 3nd gene ration in Kongju. However, from early-August to late-September 5 peaks were occurred sequentially in Cheungyang. Second generation adults were occurred in mid-August and 3rd ones were occurred from late-September to early-October in Buyeo. In 1999, occurrence peaks of 3rd generation were early, middle and late September in Kongju, Cheungyang and Buyeo respectively. Damaged rate were 6.8%, 6.6% and 15.3% in Kongju, Cheungyang and Buyeo, respectively. Damaged rate order due to variety were Eunki, Chukpa, Danpa, Bokpa, Wangjung, Byunggo57, Yuoma at Buyeo and were Chukpa, Dukmyung, Byunggo57 at Cheungyang in 1999. Damage rate of chestnut were different with variety. Eunki and Chukpa in Buyeo and Chukpa and Dukmyung in Cheungyang were more damaged by D. punctiferalis respectively.

  • This study was conducted to determine the optimal composition of sex attractant for monitoring adults of the tobacco cutworm, Spodoptera litura, in Korea. Lures of different compositions from the two sex pheromone components the female, (Z,E)-9,11-tetradecadienyl acetate (Z9E11-14:Ac) and (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadienyl acetate (Z9E12-14:Ac), were compared for male attraction using synthetic chemicals, rubber septa, and funnel traps in soybean and peanut fields. After sequential tests were conducted using three sets of the two components different ranges from 5:5 to 10:1, from 9:1 to 99:1, and from 9:1 to 39:1, the 19:1 ratio was identified as the most efficient composition. However, S. litura males were barely caught in the trap of the Z9E11-14Ac single component lure. The results show that both the sex attractant compounds are necessary for monitoring adults S. litura males. The higher the pheromone amount in the dispenser in the range from 0.1 to 10 mg, the more males were attracted. Furthermore, the trap height of 1.5 m was optimal for male capture.

  • Seasonal occurrence of persimmon bark borer moth, Euzophera batangensis, and attractiveness of its sex pheromone gland components and trap types were studied at sweet (non-astringent) persimmon orchards of two southern provinces of Gyeongsangnam-do and Jeollanam-do, Korea, from 2014 to 2016. E. batangensis occurred three times a year. Occurrences of the moths of the over-wintered, the $1^{st}$ and the $2^{nd}$ generations were early April to late May, early June to late July, and early August to mid October, respectively. The (Z9,E12)-tetradeca-9,12-dien-1-ol (Z9,E12-14OH) was more attractive than (Z)-tetradec-9-en-1-ol (Z9-14OH). The Z9,E12-14OH was equally attractive to the 9:1 binary mixture of Z9,E12-14OH and Z9-14OH to the male moths. The three trap types of funnel, white and red delta traps had no effect on the attractiveness of the components.
