Knowledge, Attitudes, Experiences in Sex and Needs for Sex Education of Nursing Students and Non-Nursing Students (일 지역 간호여대생과 일반여대생의 성 지식, 태도, 경험 및 교육 요구 비교)

  • This study was focused on comparing the knowledge, attitudes and experiences in sex and the needs for sex education of nursing students and non-nursing students. The subjects of this study were 403 female students who attended 4 universities in Busan. The data was collected from November 2002 to December, and analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard variance, t-test and Chi-square. The results were as follows: 1. The mean score of sex knowledge of the nursing students was 13.29 and the non-nursing students's was 11.11. There was a difference(p=0.000) between nursing and non-nursing students in sex knowledge. 2. The mean score of sex attitude of nursing and non-nursing students was 25.64, 26.65 respectively. There was no statistical difference. 3. 61.8% of the nursing students and 62.3% of the non-nursing students had experienced a relation with the opposite sex. Kissing experience was 59.9%, 61.8% and masturbation was 9.5%, 9.2% respectively. Sexual intercourse was 5.3%, 11.9% and contraception was 1.9%, 8.2% respectively. Among these experiences, sexual intercourse and contraception experience rate were different(p=0.017, p=0.002 respectively) between nursing and non-nursing students. 4. Of 19 sexual education contents, only 'the dignity of life' showed a difference. That is, more nursing students(92.9%) wanted to know about 'the dignity of life' than non-nursing students(85.7%). Among the respcndent's needs on the sexual education contents, 'Contraception' was rated first and followed by 'Sex psychology of men and women', 'Pregnancy', 'Prevention of sexual crime' and 'Sexually transmitted diseases'. Most of the respcndents(95.8%) wanted sex education introduced in the :first year of university, and presented as a special class. Specifically, 50.0% of the students wanted the education to be more realistic and systemic. With the above results, when university faculties are sexual educating to university students, they have to aware of the difference of target students. And they need to stress more realistic and specific aspect of sexual education learning rather than theoretical teaching.

  • This study was performed to provide preliminary data for the development of a useful instrument to measure the effect of sex education. The study was conducted with the voluntary participation of 155 college students enrolled in the course "Sexuality and Relationship" at Y university in Seoul. At the end of that course, they were asked to write freely about the change they had experienced on sexuality. All meaningful statements were elicited and classified into 7 categories; "Change of Knowledge", "Enlightenment", "Change of Attitude on Sexuality", "Buildup of Ability", "Buildup of. Identity", "Change of Emotion", "Change of Behavior:' There were significant changes in the areas of knowledge(28. 6%), enlightenment(27.4%), and attitudes(20.3%) about sexuality among these 7 categories. The Change of Knowledge category consists of 3 areas: "concretion of knowledge", "increase of information", and "correction of misunderstanding." In the category of Enlightenment, total 12 areas are included: "sex role", "erception of lack of knowledge", "importance of family", "life plan", "parent role", "value of life", "equality", "sexual autonomy", "importance of sexuality", "freedom of sexuality", "perception of sexual problem", and "meaning of love." The Attitude Change category consists of 8 areas. These are "being natural", "being progressive", "being sensitive", "being truthful", "being expressive", "being cautious", "being responsible", and "being confident". The category of Buildup of Ability includes 4 areas: "problem solving", "sex education", "relationship", and "communication". The category of Buildup of Identity includes "sexual identity", and "value of sexuality". The Emotional Change category includes 3 areas: "positive feeling", "negative feeling", and "breaking from negative feeling on sexuality". The Behavior Change category includes "sex-related behavioral change". In conclusion, up to now most researches on sex education effect measures only changes of knowledge, attitude, and behavior. But we believe the changes in "Enlightenment", "Buildup of Ability", "Buildup of Identity", "Change of Emotion", should be included in addition to knowledge, attitude, and behavior in the development of an instrument to measure the sex education effects. And the effect of sex education should measure the degree of learning of autonomy, enlightenment, and ability of behavior and so on rather than studying the simple changes in sexuality.enment", "Buildup of Ability", "Buildup of Identity", "Change of Emotion", should be included in addition to knowledge, attitude, and behavior in the development of an instrument to measure the sex education effects.   • This study examines the different degrees of sexual awareness shown among high school girls in urban and rural areas. The analysis was carried out by dividing these students into urban and rural groups. A questionnaire of 51 questions based on previous studies and a review of the literature was prepared for students in the two groups after two preliminary surveys, a reliability test, and correlation. There were 721 copies of the questionnaire in total which were distributed to students of 2 urban and 4 rural girls' high schools. The analysis of the results was carried out using by means of SPSS 10.0, and it became clear that girl's students' viewpoints toward sex, the actual circumstances of their acquaintance of the opposite sex, the access to information about sex, the content of current sex education at school and the ideal type of sex education, tended to show differences between the two groups. This study showed that the standardized and uniform content and methods of current sex education in public schools does not work properly. Sex education at schools in South Korea has reached a limit of their effectiveness to a point where research into more effective sex education is required.

Effect of School-based Sex Education: the Improvement of Sex related Knowledges and Attitudes of Rural High School Women Students (농촌 여자고등학생의 성교육 전과 후의 성관련 지식 및 태도의 변화)

  • This study was conducted to analyze the change of sex-related knowledges and attitudes of female students after sex education intervention at rural high school. After conducting a pre-survey on 119 subjects of 1st and 2nd grade female students in two rural high schools in November 1999, 150 minute-sex education was provided for the students by health professional from health center. Two follow-up survey were conducted in one month and six months later to evaluate the effect of sex education. The score of knowledge of AIDS was increased from 8.46 in pre-education to 11.90 in one month and 11.87 in six month later. The positive attitude toward the pre-marage sexual relationship was changed from 16.9% in pre-education to 14.4% in one month and 23.5% in six month later. The opinion for the heterosexual intercommunion during school age was not changed by sex education intervention and the subjects were pro for the making male friends during their school period. The subjects were more understood that AIDS patient should be treated humanly and they recognized that the mode of disease transmission and how to prevent the disease. To maintain the effect of sex education, the continuous and regular educational intervention and team approach from school and health professional should be necessary.

Development and Effects of a Sex Education Program with Blended Learning for University Students (대학생을 위한 블렌디드 러닝 기법의 성 교육 프로그램 개발 및 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was describes the development and implementation a sex education program with a blended learning method for university students. Methods: Sixty-eight university students were recruited either to the experimental group (n=35) or the control group (n=33). This program was developed based on the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation model. The analysis phase consisted of a literature review, focus group interview, expert consultations, and target group survey. In addition, learning objectives and structure were designed, and a printed text-book, presentation slides, cross-word puzzle, and debate topics were developed. In the implementation phase, the program was conducted 3 times over the course of 3 weeks. The evaluation phase involved verification of the effects of the program on sex-related knowledge, sexual autonomy, and justification of violence, as well as an assessment of satisfaction with the program. Results: The experimental group had significantly higher scores on sex-related knowledge (t=5.47, p<.001), sexual autonomy (t=2.40, p=.019), and justification of violence (t=2.52, p=.015) than the control group. Conclusion: The results indicate that this sex education program with blended learning was effective in meeting the needs of university students and can be widely used in this context.

A Study on the Relationship between Attitude to Sex and Prevention Efforts against Cervical Cancer among Korean Women in their 20s (한국 20대 여성의 성에 대한 태도와 자궁경부암 예방행위와의 관련성 연구)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine the Korean women's attitude toward sex in their 20s in order to investigate the relationship between attitude toward sex and preventive behavior against cervical cancer. Method: The data was collected by conducting a survey in parts of Chungcheongbuk provinces from November 1st to the 10th, 2017, with a total of 353 respondents. Frequency analysis, chi-square test and logistic-regression analysis were conducted. Result: A result of logistic-regression analysis, the degree of preventive behavior against cervical cancer of those who were 'conservative' toward sex was 1.866 times greater, significantly. As the attitude toward sex becomes more liberal, the awareness of the necessity for preventive behavior against cervical cancer may possibly become lower. Conclusion: Therefore it is necessary to work in tandem with the school health program to increase preventive behavior against cervical cancer for the women in their 20s through early education and promotion.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyse the relationship between the sex role types and the interests toward contents in practical arts of elementary school students. The questionnaire was composed of questions about the types of sex role and interests toward contents in practical arts. contents in practical arts subject were hoe economics agriculture technology computer. The respondents were 123 sixth grade boys and 122 girls from elementary schools in Seoul and Taegu. 245 questionnaires were used for data analysis. Frequency. percent x(sup)2-test. average, standard deviation, F-test. and Duncan’s multiple range test were followed. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Generally speaking androgynous and undifferentiated sex role type are more frequent than masculine and feminine type in elementary school children. 2. Androgynous sex role type students were higher than undifferentiated and masculine sex role types in scores of the interest toward home economics in practical arts subject. 3. Androgynous masculine and feminine sex role type students were higher than undifferentiated sex role types in scores of the interest toward agriculture in practical arts subject. 4. Masculine sex role type students were higher than androgynous types and undifferentiated and feminine sex role types were lower than androgynous in scores of the interest toward technology in practical arts subject. 5. Androgynous and masculine sex role type students were higher than feminine and undifferentiated sex role types in scores of the interest toward computer in practical arts subject.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of sex education, focusing on the sexual activities of the elderly, on high school girls' sexual knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions. Methods: A quasi-experimental pre-post design was used, and the data of 82 participants (41 in each group) were analyzed. The educational effects were assessed through sexual knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions. The data were analyzed through SPSS 18.0, using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and paired t-tests. Results: The experimental and control groups had similar demographics. Sex education was effective in increasing sexual knowledge (p<.001), and changing the attitudes (p<.001) and perceptions (p<.001) of members of the experimental group for the better. Conclusions: This study has shown that sex education can improve high school girls' understanding of elderly sexual activities. This study is meaningful in that, it sought to facilitate a positive change in young people's attitudes towards elderly sexuality and quality of life.

  • Sex does not mean simply the physical behaviors related to man and woman, rather the sexuality needed socializing process toward total personality. It is believed that religion or social norms on sex, limit talking about sex openly. But children have, their own sexual thinking and want to know why and how. This survey was conducted to find out the need in sex education of primary school students and their parents in Seoul area, comparing students'sexual knowledge, attitude, and behavior to their parents', in October 1989. Total 400 students and their parents who are attending two primary school in Seoul, were given the questionnaires, and 395 students' and 310 parents', respectively, were finally analyzed. The following results were obtained. 1. The mean of 11 questions In asking sexual knowledge of students was 6.18, and showed no difference between boys and girls. But the higher grade, the higher score. 2. The positive attitudes on marriage and sex roles were showed, but negative on physical changes with puberty, which was same to the parents' reaction. 3. Moro than three-forths of students wanted to take sex education class, and one-third of them believed that it should be conducted by school nurses. This was accorded with their parents. 4. The sexual knowledge degree and attitudes of parents went proportionately to their higher educational background. Protestants reacted more negatively to the given sexual terms. No significant difference was made among the age groups of them. As stated above. the degree of sexual knowledge and attitudes are movable accordingly to their children's sexual thinking and need. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that sex education In the primary schools should be conducted systematically involving parents, especially mothers. And it is suggested that school nurses undertake their responsibilities as the sex educators.

A Study of Marital Satisfaction According to Sex-role Attitude for the Elderly Women (여자노인의 성역할 태도와 결혼만족도에 관한 연구(I))

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relational between elderly women's sex-role attitude and their marital satisfaction. For this purpose, a questionnaire was surveyed 186 elderly women living in Kwangiu and Chonnam. The collected data were analyzed by using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, ANOVA and stepwise regression analysis. The results of this research were as follows ; First The total points of the elderly women's sex-role attitude score was 16.4, which was represented mixed trends of traditional and modem. And the total points of the elderly women's marital satisfaction score was 31.6, which was higher than the median 30. Second, Elderly women's sex-role attitude score was meaningfully different according to education level, health state, economic state. And elderly women's marital satisfaction score was meaningfully different according to social activity, economic state, health state, education level, age. Third, As the results of regression analysis, it was shown that the highest influencing variable on their marital satisfaction was the social activity, economic state, education level.
