Although the theory of Sasang Consititution is widely used in oriental clinic, there is only conceptual definition about the constitution not technical definition which is consented by every experts. In the present, the effect and different responses of constitutional medicines is the most widely accepted criteria among technical definitions. However, these medicines consist of several herbs which are included specific constitution. So, it is hard to define the characters about the Sasang Constitution through analysis of the medicines. In this paper, we collected the various information about the constitutional herbs, and constructed database and web application for accessing this information. It is useful and can be basis for finding the characteristics of constitutional medicines.
Hysterectomy can lead to various symptoms threatening decent quality of life. As the frequency of hysterectomy increases, there are many patients who want to take oriental medicine treatments for complications. Several clinical studies have reported the effectiveness of oriental medicine treatment for post-hysterectomy complications. Out of these symptoms, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV, hereafter) are indicated at about 20-40% of frequency within patients with general anesthesia, and they may occur not only during recovery from operation, but also after discharge. Although the incidence of PONV has decreased now thanks to the usage of antiemetics, PONV still causes some difficulties for patients returning to daily life. This study reports two cases of post-hysterectomy complications such as nausea, dizziness, vomiting, general weakness, and coldness of the limbs, which had good responses to herbal medication and acupuncture.
Objective : The main purpose of this study is to find a reasonable solutions for utilization of herbal formulas based on the medical classics. Methods : We used official Ten 'Selected Korean Medical Classics(SKMC)'. For input of formulas from SKMC, we had to select proper editions of them. After consultations with experts of 'The Korean Medicine Society for the Herbal Formula Study' and 'Korean Society of Medical History', we chose the proper editions of SKMC, and according to those books, we built formulas database using microsoft office excel sheets, respectively. Results : After whole input procedures, we requested several experts to inspect the results and also, to correct errors in them. Input categories were name of formula, name of classic, classification, original source, composition herb, weight, unit of weight, weight conversion index, converted weight, basic formula, indications, reason for modification, preparing method, taking method and contraindications. Final number of whole formulas in DB was 32,882. Conclusions : We used SKMC and built database using excel program. Through this procedure, we can provide a developmental ways to make a foundation for herbal formulas from the medical classics, so that we can make herbal formulas be standardized or industrialized more efficiently.

Peucedani Radix is the root of Angelica decursiva Franchet et Savatier (=Peucedanum decursivum Maximowicz) or Peucedanum praeruptorum Dunn in several Asian countries. The coumarins contained in Peucedani Radix were quantitatively analyzed using HPLC-DAD to develop a simultaneous determination for the quality control of A. decursiva and P. praeruptorum. For quantitative analysis, four major coumarins contained in these medicinal plants were assessed. Nodakenin (1), nodakenetin (2), praeruptorin A (3), and praeruptorin B (4) were separated with a Phenomenex Luna C18 column ($5{\mu}m$, $4.6{\times}250mm$) under the gradient conditions using distilled water with 0.1% phosphoric acid and acetonitrile with 0.1% phosphoric acid as the mobile phase, at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min and a detection wavelength of 330 nm. This method was fully validated for linearity, accuracy, precision, recovery, and limit of detection and quantification. As a result, A. decursiva and P. praeruptorum were clearly classified by the quantification of four major coumarins in extracts. Also, the pattern recognition analysis based on HPLC indicates that all of the samples were largely clustered into two groups. Therefore, it is possible to distinguish between A. decursiva and P. praeruptorum and contribute to quality control.

Objectives : The combined treatment (CT) with oriental herbal medicine and western biomedical medicine is prevalent in the world including Korea. But the clinical information on frequency, efficacy and safety of CT at lout cerebrovascular attack hat not known thoroughly yet. This study aimed to identify the status and adverse effects of CT for the treatment of stroke patients. Methods : A self-completed questionnaire survey and medical record survey by oriental medical doctors were performed in 20 Korean Oriental medical hospitals. Of the initial 1,000 in-patients through 2-stage sampling method, 883 were participated in this surrey, resulting in a response rate of 88.3%. Results : Among stroke patients, the proportion of CT was 94.1%. 156 respondents (18.8%): were experienced several adverse effects including headache, dizziness (fatigue), diarrhea, constipation, chest discomfort, etc. The severity of these adverse effects was generally mild to moderate. Although they quitted the CT, 9.8% of patients were not relieved from adverse effects. Conclusions : This study suggests that most patients in Korean Oriental medical hospitals used the combined treatment with oriental herbal medicine and western biomedical medicine for management of stroke. Objectives: To expand and provide information on the efficacy of herbal medicines, anti-obesity effects were evaluated. In many studies, plant-derived components with anti-obesity efficacies have been investigated for their potential inhibitory effects on 3T3-L1 preadipocyte cells. The purpose of this study was to investigate the anti-obesity effects of 65 herbal medicine in 3T3-L1 preadipocyte cells. Methods: Preferentially, 3T3-L1 cells were treated with 65 herbal medicines (500 ㎍/mL) during differentiation for 8 days. Next, 3T3-L1 cells were treated with selected herbal medicines at concentrations ranging from 50 to 200 ㎍/mL during differentiation for 8 days. The accumulation of lipid droplets was determined by Oil Red O staining. The expressions of genes related to adipogenesis were measured by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analyses. Results: Among the 65 kinds of herbal medicines, 13 herbal medicines that been shown to be effective against the accumulation of lipid droplets were selected. Finally, selected Banhasasim-tang and Samhwangsasim-tang showed inhibitory activity on adipocyte differentiation at 3T3-L1 preadipocytes without affecting cell toxicity. In addition, Banhasasim-tang and Samhwangsasim-tang significantly reduced the expression levels of several adipocyte marker genes including peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-γ and CCAAT/enhancer binding protein-α. Conclusions : These results suggest that the ability of Banhasasim-tang and Samhwangsasimtang has inhibited overall adipogenesis and lipid accumulation in the 3T3-L1 cells. Banhasasim-tang and Samhwangsasim-tang may be a promising medicine for the treatment of obesity and related metabolic disorders.
Background/Aims: Aplastic anemia is defined as pancytopenia (anaemia, leucopenia, and thrombocytopenia) result from aplasia of the bone marrow. Many studies have shown that survival rate of aplastic anemia is 50-60% with immunomodulation therapy. In Korea, there is a lack of research considering oriental herbal medicine with aplastic anemia. Methods: It was compared and analyzed that recently several experimental or clinical reports of oriental herbal medicine on aplastic anemia. Results and Conclusion: The oriental herb of Panax ginseng radix, Cprdonopsis pilosula radix, Astragalus membranaceus radix, Atractylodes marcrocephala. Cervi Cornu Parvum, Epimedii Herba, Boshniakiae Herba, Morindae Radix, Angelicae gigantis Radix, Cascutae Semen, Lycii Fructus, Polygoni Multiflori Radix potently stimulated hematopoietic stem cell activity, Response rate to oriental herbal medicine of aplastic anemia was 30-60% and effect rate of aplastic anemia was 73-93%, Bian zheng Lun zhi(辨證論治 treatment according to syndrome differentiation) which based on Shen xu(腎虛) is presumed to approach highest degree effect in response rate.
