  • This paper proposes an on-line rotor time constant estimation strategy for indirect field oriented induction machines. The performance of the indirect field oriented control is dependent especially on the rotor time constant whose value varies according to the temperature. The proposed method calculates the difference between the nominal rotor time constant and the real value from the d- and q-axis integration terms of a proportional integral (PI) current regulator and the demanded voltages of the induction machine to regulate the current in the steady state. Because the proposed strategy has a simple structure and is available in wide speed and torque ranges, the proposed method can be easily used in the industrial field. The effectiveness of proposed strategy is verified with simulations and a 7.5kW experimental setup.

  • In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling n jobs with sequence-dependent processing times on a set of parallel-identical machines. The processing time of each job consists of a pure processing time and a sequence-dependent setup time. The objective is to maximize the total remaining machine available time which can be used for other tasks. For the problem, we first propose a dynamic programming(DP) algorithm for sequencing jobs processed on a single machine. The algorithm is then extended to handle jobs on parallel-identical machines. Finally, we developed an improved version of the algorithm which generates optimal solutions using much smaller amount of memory space and computing time. Computational results are provided to illustrate the performance of the DP algorithms.

  • Magnetic nanoparticle based bioseparation in microfluidics is a multiphysics phenomenon that involves interplay of various parameters. The ability to understand the dynamics of these parameters is a prerequisite for designing and developing more efficient magnetic cell/bio-particle separation systems. Therefore, in this work proof-of-concept experiments are combined with advanced numerical simulation to design and optimize the capturing process of magnetic nanoparticles responsible for efficient microfluidic bioseparation. A low cost generic microfluidic platform was developed using a novel micromolding method that can be done without a clean room techniques and at much lower cost and time. Parametric analysis using both experiments and theoretical predictions were performed. It was found that flow rate and magnetic field strength greatly influence the transport of magnetic nanoparticles in the microchannel and control the capturing efficiency. The results from mathematical model agree very well with experiments. The model further demonstrated that a 12% increase in capturing efficiency can be achieved by introducing of iron-grooved bar in the microfluidic setup that resulted in increase in magnetic field gradient. The numerical simulations were helpful in testing and optimizing key design parameters. Overall, this work demonstrated that a simple low cost experimental proof-of-concept setup can be synchronized with advanced numerical simulation not only to enhance the functional performance of magneto-fluidic capturing systems but also to efficiently design and develop microfluidic bioseparation systems for biomedical applications.

  • An equivalent model has been developed to estimate the electromagnetic immunity for integrated circuits under a complex electromagnetic environment. The complete model is based on the characteristics of the equipment and physical configuration of the device under test (DUT) and describes the measurement setup as well as the target integrated circuits under test, the corresponding package, and a specially designed printed circuit board. The advantage of the proposed model is that it can be applied to a SPICE-like simulator and the immunity of the integrated circuits can be easily achieved without costly and time-consuming measurements. After simulation, measurements were performed to verify the accuracy of the equivalent model for immunity prediction. The improvement of measurement accuracy due to the added effect of a bi-directional coupler in the test setup is also addressed.

  • Cloud vehicular networks are a promising paradigm to improve vehicular through distributing computation tasks between remote clouds and local vehicular terminals. Software-Defined Network(SDN) can bring advantages to Intelligent Transportation System(ITS) through its ability to provide flexibility and programmability through a logically centralized controlled cluster that has a full comprehension of view of the network. However, as the SDN paradigm is currently studied in vehicular ad hoc networks(VANETs), adapting it to work on cloud-based vehicular network requires some changes to address particular computation features such as task computation of applications of cloud-based vehicular networks. There has been initial work on briging SDN concepts to vehicular networks to reduce the latency by using the fog computing technology, but most of these studies do not directly tackle the issue of task computation. This paper proposes a Software-Defined Cloud-based vehicular Network called SDCVN framework. In this framework, we study the effectiveness of task computation of applications of cloud-based vehicular networks with vehicular cloud and roadside edge cloud. Considering the edge cloud service migration due to the vehicle mobility, we present an efficient roadside cloud based controller entity scheme where the tasks are adaptively computed through vehicular cloud mode or roadside computing predictive trajectory decision mode. Simulation results show that our proposal demonstrates a stable and low route setup time in case of installing the forwarding rules of the routing applications because the source node needs to contact the controller once to setup the route.

  • In this paper, a study on automation method for the circuit/EM (Electro-Magnetic) simulation is carried out to analyze effectively the SI/PI (Signal Integrity/Power Integrity) issues which occur on circuits and/or PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards). For the automation of the circuit/EM simulation, algorithms performing each process of the SI/PI analysis automatically (such as ports setup, circuit definition and SI/PI evaluation) are developed; thereby automation system for the SI/PI analysis is constructed with the algorithms. The automation of the circuit/EM simulation is accomplished in the environment of the C/S (Client/Server) architecture in order to reduce resources such as high cost computers demanded for the SI/PI analysis. The automation method for the SI/PI analyses proposed in this paper reduces effort, time, and cost spent on the environment setup for simulation and the SI/PI analysis process. In addition, the proposed method includes automation of the documenting process, which organizes, records and displays the SI/PI analysis results automatically for users.

  • In this paper, we report a case study on the common due-date assignment and scheduling problem in a paper remanufacturing system that produces corrugated cardboards using collected waste papers for a given set of orders under the make-to-order (MTO) environment. Since the system produces corrugated cardboards in an integrated process and has sequence-dependent setups, the problem considered here can be regarded as common due-date assignment and sequencing on a single machine with sequence-dependent setup times. The objective is to minimize the sum of the penalties associated with due-date assignment, earliness, and tardiness. In the study, the earliness and tardiness penalties were obtained from inventory holding and backorder costs, respectively. To solve the problem, we adopted two types of algorithms: (a) branch and bound algorithm that gives the optimal solutions; and (b) heuristic algorithms. Computational experiments were done on the data generated from the case and the results show that both types of algorithms work well for the case data. In particular, the branch and bound algorithm gave the optimal solutions quickly. However, it is recommended to use the heuristic algorithms for large-sized instances, especially when the solution time is very critical.

  • In this paper, an optical implementation of a novel asymmetrical cryptosystem combined with D-H secret key sharing and triple DES is proposed. The proposed optical cryptosystem is realized by performing free-space interconnected optical logic operations such as AND, OR and XOR which are implemented in Mach-Zehnder type interferometer architecture. The advantage of the proposed optical architecture provides dual outputs simultaneously, and the encryption optical setup can be used as decryption optical setup only by changing the inputs of SLMs. The proposed cryptosystem can provide higher security strength than the conventional electronic algorithm, because the proposed method uses 2-D array data, which can increase the key length surprisingly and uses 3DES algorithm, which protects against “meet in the middle” attacks. Another advantage of the proposed asymmetrical cryptosystem is that it is free to change the user’s two private random numbers in generating the public keys at any time. Numerical simulation and performance analysis verify that the proposed asymmetric cryptosystem is effective and robust against attacks for the asymmetrical cipher system.
