In this study, the physicochemical characteristics of imported whole sesame oil (WS; WS1, WS2), imported sesame powder oil (SP; SP1, SP2), sesame oil mixed with imported whole sesame and sesame powder (WSP; WSP1, WSP2) were analyzed and their quality characteristics were compared according to the imported raw material type. $L^*$ and $b^*$ values of WS1 were the lowest and the browning index was significantly high. WS2 showed contrasting results. The redness of sesame oil was high due to its high acid value. The correlation value showed a low acid value as the content of saturated fatty acid was high. SP showed low values for antioxidant property and overall preference. The overall preference score of sensory evaluation showed the highest positive correlation with the score, suggesting that SP lacked the unique fragrance. Therefore, SP lacked the specific aroma and antioxidant property.

The grain yield and flour quality of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. 'Jokyung') were investigated in the paddy fields in which the double-cropping of wheat linked to rice (Oryza sativa L.) and its alternative crops [black soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), and perilla (Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton)] was applied. In the soils in which black soybean, sesame, and perilla as pre-crops were cultivated, the soil pH was higher and the electrical conductivity was lower than in the rice pre-cropped soil. In addition, the available phosphate (Av. P2O5), and contents of Ca2+ and Mg2+ were higher than in the rice pre-cropped soil. Winter wheat growth characteristics such as culm length, spike length, number of spikes and grains were generally favorable in the black soybean pre-cropped soil. However, the grain yield of winter wheat increased in the black soybean, sesame, and perilla pre-cropped soils by 100 kg/10a or more than in the rice pre-cropped soil. Furthermore, protein content and SDS-sedimentation value of the flour were higher, while amylose content was slightly lower, in the black soybean, sesame, and perilla pre-cropped soils than in rice pre-cropped soil. These results suggest that cultivation of rice alternative crops such as sesame, black soybean, and perilla as pre-crops in paddy soil could improve the physical and chemical properties of the soil and contribute to producing high-quality wheat flour more advantageous for the baking process.

This study investigated the lignan content, total phenol content, and antioxidant activities [2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC)] of fermented sesame by cultivars. The results showed that the lignan contents of fermented and non-fermented sesame ranged from 2.35~6.58 mg/g and 2.17 to 6.58 mg/g, respectively. The highest total phenol contents of fermented and non-fermented sesame were 51.90 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g and 25.94 mg GAE/g, respectively. DPPH radical scavenging and ORAC value ranged from 37.95 to 82.57% and from 172.34 to $1,067.80{\mu}M$ TE/g in non-fermented sesame and fermented sesame, respectively. Fermented sesame had higher lignan content, total phenol content and antioxidant activities. than those of non-fermented sesame. Fermented sesame subjected to bioconversion showed increased lignan content and high antioxidant activity.

This study was to compare the antioxidant and anti-proliferative activities of perilla (Perilla frutescens Britton) and sesame (Seasamum indicum L.) leaf extracts. The total polyphenol levels of sesame leaf ($634.7{\pm}1.2$ mg gallic acid equivalent/100 g dried leaf) were higher than those of perilla leaf ($408.7{\pm}4.6$ mg gallic acid equivalent/100 g dried leaf; p<0.001). The total flavonoid levels of sesame leaf ($166.7{\pm}17.3$ mg quercetin equivalent/100 g dried leaf) were also higher than those of perilla leaf ($108.2{\pm}3.7$ mg quercetin equivalent/100 g dried leaf; p<0.05). ABTS radical- and DPPH radical-scavenging activities of sesame leaf extracts (78.9% and 18.2%, respectively) were higher than those of perilla leaf extracts (46.0% and 9.0%, respectively; p<0.01). Both perilla and sesame leaf extracts significantly inhibited the growth of HCT116 human colon cancer cells. However, the inhibitory activities of sesame leaf extracts were more pronounced than those of perilla leaf extracts (p<0.001). These results indicate that sesame leaf extracts have higher antioxidant and anti-proliferative activities than perilla leaf extracts. More studies are needed in order to enhance the sensory value of sesame leaf and to develop sesame leaf as health/functional food ingredients.
Seedling blight of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is one of the most serious diseases in Korea. This study was performed to control seedling blight in the field where sesame has been cultured for 4 years of Industrial Crop Division at the Crop Experiment Station. The pathogenic fungi of seedling blight which is known Fusarium oxysporum f. vasinfectium and Rhizoctonia solani was inoculated to the wheat media and it was spreaded on the experimental field in the concentration of 109 of wheat media mixed with 10g of fine soil. Seed sterilization was the most effective method for seedling blight control for two year experiment. Seed sterilant Benlate-T was highly effective for con trolling seedling blight with infection rate of 4% and yield of 40.7kg per 10a comparing to the control with infection rate of 96% and grain yield of 6.4kg per l0a, the other chemicals, Busan 30, Vitathiram, Captan showed good effect to control seedling blight, but less effect to the Benlate-T. The spraying treatments on leaf surface 25 days after sowing were not effective to seedling blight.
A large amount of the mineral nitrogen is necessary for crop growth. With the use of nitrogen fertilizers, agricultural yield has increased during the last few decades. However, at the same time, nitrate from the cultivated land can be a source of environmental pollution, especially in water systems. For nitrogen management, it is necessary to analyze the pattern of nitrogen movement in soil. In this study, nitrogen leaching in upland soils was evaluated using undisturbed lysimeters with different soil textures during sesame cultivation. The soil texture of the lysimeters was clay loam (Songjung series) and sandy loam (Sangju series) soils. Sesame was cultivated from May 25 to August 24 in 2020. The standard amount of NPK fertilizer (N-P2O5-K2O = 2.9-3.1-3.2 kg·10 a-1) was applied before sowing. The amount of nitrogen leaching was calculated by multiplying the nitrogen (NO3-N + NH4-N) concentration and the amount of water drained below 1.5 m soil depth. The water was drained through percolation into macropores in the clay loam lysimeter. In contrast, in the sandy loam lysimeter, water drained more slowly than in the clay loam lysimeter. There was a slight difference in the total amount of leachate during the cultivation period, but the amount of nitrogen leaching was high in sandy loam soil. During the sesame cultivation period, the amount of nitrogen leaching from clay soil was 5.64 kg·10 a-1, and 10.70 kg·10 a-1 for sandy soil. We found that there was a difference in leaching depending on the soil physical characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the characteristics of soil to evaluate the leaching of nitrogen.
Out of 12 seed samples of Sesamum indicum L. tested, Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi.) Goid was detected in 7 samples for the first time in Korea. Detailed descriptions of the habit character and pycnidial and pycnospore morphology of this fungus were described. Pycnidia of this fungus were not formed on agar media but they were formed on Water Agar Leaf Media under fluorescent light. M. phaseolina caused heavy reduction in seed germination and seedling stand of sesame and produced charcoal rot symptom on potato tubers. It was also detected from over wintered plant debris and diseased seedlings in the field.
The Gene action for eight quantitative characters related to the plant type was estimated using diallel cross among three different plant types of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) in 2001. The parental varieties used for diallel cross were Ahnnam and Yangbaeck as indeterminate type, ksan22 as semi-determinate type, and dt-45 and Suwon131 as determinate type. In variance and covariance analysis (Wr-Vr) for eight characters the mean square of array except for capsule length, 1,000 seed weight were significant, which suggest that varieties involved in diallel set cross may have epitasis. Complete dominance was observed in the flowering periods, and ratio of matured grains while partial dominance was observed in the plant height, no. of capsules per plant, and no. of branch per plant. Broad sense heritability for flowering periods, plant height, no. of capsules per plant, and no. of branch per plant ranged from 0.91 to 0.99. Narrow sense heritability for flowering periods, capsule length, ratio of matured grain, 1,000 seed eight were 0.18 to 0.34, and plant height, no. of capsules per plant and no. of branch per plant were ranged 0.77 to 0.81.
Application of genotype by environment ($G\;{\times}\;E$) interaction would be used for identifying optimum test condition of the varietal adaptation in the establishment of breeding purpose. Yield and yield components were used to perform additive main effect and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) analysis. Significant difference for $G\;{\times}\;E$ interaction were observed for all variable examined. For yield, 0.18 of total sum of squares corresponded to $G\;{\times}\;E$ interaction. Correlation analysis was carried out between genotypic scores of the first interaction principal component axis (IPCA 1) for agronomic characters. Significant correlations were observed between IPCA 1 for yield and capsule bearing stem length (CBSL), number of capsule per plant (NOC). The biplot of grain yield means for IPCA1 which accounted for 34% of the variation in total treatment sums of squares showed different reaction according to $G\;{\times}\;E$ interaction, genotypes and environments. Taegu showed relatively lower positive IPCA1 scores, and it also showed smaller coefficient variation of yield mean where it is recommendable as a optimal site for the sesame cultivar adaptation and evaluation trial. In case of variables, Yangbaek and M1 showed relatively lower IPCA1 scores, but the score direction showed opposite each other on the graph. Ansan, Miryang1, Miryang4, and Miryang6 seemed to be similar group in view of yield response against IPCA1 scores. These results will be helpful to select experimental site for sesame in Korea to minimize $G\;{\times}\;E$ interaction for the selection of promising genotype with higher stability.
Volatile compounds of dropwort (Oenanthe javanica DC), crown daisy (Chrysanthemum coronarium L. var. spatiosum), and sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) were isolated by steam distillation under reduced pressure (DRP) and liquid-liquid continuous extraction (LLE). Aroma extracts of the plants were identified by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and their antioxidant activities were evaluated in two different assays. The aroma extracts isolated from dropwort, crown daisy, and sesame inhibited the oxidation of hexanal by 25%, 95%, and 99%, respectively, for one month at the $500{\mu}g/mL$ level. They inhibited malonaldehyde formation from cod liver oil by 48%, 54%, and 29%, respectively, at the $500{\mu}g/mL$ level. Their antioxidant activities were comparable to those of the natural antioxidant, ${\alpha}-tocopherol$.
