  • Differential power processing (DPP) systems are among the most effective architectures for photovoltaic (PV) power systems because they are highly efficient as a result of their distributed local maximum power point tracking ability, which allows the fractional processing of the total generated power. However, DPP systems require a high-efficiency, high step-up/down bidirectional converter with broad operating ranges and galvanic isolation. This study proposes a single, magnetic, high-efficiency, high step-up/down bidirectional DC-DC converter. The proposed converter is composed of a bidirectional flyback and a bidirectional isolated switched-capacitor cell, which are competitively cheap. The output terminals of the flyback converter and switched-capacitor cell are connected in series to obtain the voltage step-up. In the reverse power flow, the converter reciprocally operates with high efficiency across a broad operating range because it uses hard switching instead of soft switching. The proposed topology achieves a genuine on-off interleaved energy transfer at the transformer core and windings, thus providing an excellent utilization ratio. The dynamic characteristics of the converter are analyzed for the controller design. Finally, a 240 W hardware prototype is constructed to demonstrate the operation of the bidirectional converter under a current feedback control loop. To improve the efficiency of a PV system, the maximum power point tracking method is applied to the proposed converter.

  • This paper presents an interleaved active-clamping zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) forward-flyback converter without an output choke. The presented topology has two active-clamping circuits with two separated transformers. Because of the interleaved operation of the converter, the output current ripple will be reduced. The proposed converter can approximately share the total load current between the two secondaries. Therefore, the transformer copper loss and the rectifier diodes conduction loss can be decreased. The output capacitor is made of two series capacitors which reduces the peak reverse voltage of the rectifier diodes. The circuit has no output inductor and few semiconductor elements, such that the adopted circuit has a simpler structure, a lower cost and is suitable for high power density applications. A detailed analysis and the design of this new converter are described. A prototype converter has been implemented and experimental results have been recorded with an ac input voltage of 85-135Vrms, an output voltage of 12V and an output current of 16A.

  • This paper proposes a novel zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) Push-pull DC-DC Converter for high input voltage and high power applications. This topology utilizes two switches in series to replace one switch in conventional push-pull converter, and two clamping diodes are introduced. The voltage stress of the switches is the input voltage, and the switches can realize ZVS with the use of the leakage inductance of the transformer. Furthermore, secondary full-wave rectifier with a clamping capacitor is used to eliminate the voltage oscillation and spike of the rectifier diodes due to the reverse recovery. Therefore, the electromagnetic interference is reduced effectively. The operation principle of the proposed converter is analyzed theoretically. The output characteristic, ZVS condition and design principle of the clamping capacitor are discussed. Experimental results obtained from a 270V input 2kW prototype with $95.8\%$ high efficiency confirms the design.

  • A constitutive equation of the electrical steel strip used for a raw material of transformer is proposed. The stress-strain behavior of electrical steel strip is quite different from that of common carbon steel and/or alloy steel. A series of tensile tests were performed with the specimens made from cold rolled strip. Several thicknesses of the strip were produced by a two-high (with upper and lower rolls) cold rolling pilot mill as reduction ratio increases from 10% to 90%. Its initial thickness of the strip was 2.5mm. Tensile specimens are cut out from the cold rolled strips. Mechanical properties of the steel are examined through rolling direction. Ramberg-Osgood model and the proposed equation are combined to describe the total behavior of stress-strain including instability region. The stress-strain curves calculated from the present constitutive equation are compared with those from experimentally obtained at each test condition of reduction ratios of specimen. Results show that the predicted stress-strain curves are in overall in a good agreement with measured ones.

  • This paper deals with the design and implementation of a TCSC (Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor) simulator, which is a module for an analog type power system simulator. Principally, it presents configuration of controller hardware/software and its experimental results. An analog type power system simulator consists of numerous power system components, such as various types of generator models, scale-downed transmission line modules, transformer models, switches and FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System) devices. It has been utilized for the verification of the control algorithm and the study of system characteristics analysis. This TCSC simulator is designed for 50% line compensation rate and considered for damping resister characteristic analysis. Its power rate is three phase 380V 20kVA. For hardware extendibility, its controller is designed with VMEBUS and its main CPU is TMS320C32 DSP (Digital Signal Processor). For real time control and communications, its controller is applied to the RTOS (Real Time Operation System) for multi-tasking. This RTOS is uC/OS-II. The experimental results of capacitive mode and inductive mode operations verify the fundamental operations of the TCSC.

  • The high-switching-frequency operation of power converters can achieve high power density through size reduction of passive components, such as capacitors, inductors, and transformers. However, a small-output capacitor that has small capacitance and low effective series resistance changes the small-signal model of the converter power stage. Such a capacitor can make the converter unstable by increasing the crossover frequency in the transfer function of the small-signal model. In this paper, the design and implementation of a high-frequency LLC resonant converter are presented to verify the power density enhancement achieved by decreasing the size of passive components. The effect of small output capacitance is analyzed for stability by using a proper small-signal model of the LLC resonant converter. Finally, proper design methods of a feedback compensator are proposed to obtain a sufficient phase margin in the Bode plot of the loop gain of the converter for stable operation at 500 kHz switching frequency. A theoretical approach using MATLAB, a simulation approach using PSIM, and experimental results are presented to show the validity of the proposed analysis and design methods with 100 and 500 kHz prototype converters.

  • This paper presents a soft switching DC/DC converter for high voltage application. The interleaved pulse-width modulation (PWM) scheme is used to reduce the ripple current at the output capacitor and the size of output inductors. Two converter cells are connected in series at the high voltage side to reduce the voltage stresses of the active switches. Thus, the voltage stress of each switch is clamped at one half of the input voltage. On the other hand, the output sides of two converter cells are connected in parallel to achieve the load current sharing and reduce the current stress of output inductors. In each converter cell, a half-bridge converter with the asymmetrical PWM scheme is adopted to control power switches and to regulate the output voltage at a desired voltage level. Based on the resonant behavior by the output capacitance of power switches and the transformer leakage inductance, active switches can be turned on at zero voltage switching (ZVS) during the transition interval. Thus, the switching losses of power MOSFETs are reduced. The current doubler rectifier is used at the secondary side to partially cancel ripple current. Therefore, the root-mean-square (rms) current at output capacitor is reduced. The proposed converter can be applied for high input voltage applications such as a three-phase 380V utility system. Finally, experiments based on a laboratory prototype with 960W (24V/40A) rated power are provided to demonstrate the performance of proposed converter.

  • For the precision measurement of industrial products, the location of holes inside the products, if they exist, are often selected as feature points. The measurement of hole location would be performed by vision and laser-vision sensor. However, the usage of those sensors is limited in case of big change of light intensity and reflective shiny surface of the products. In order to overcome the difficulties, we have developed a hole displacement measuring device using contact-type displacement sensors (LVDTs). The developed measurement device attached to a robot measures small displacement of a hole by allowing its X-Y movement due to the contact forces between the hole and its own circular cone. The developed device consists of three plates which are connected in series for its own function. The first plate is used for the attachment to an industrial robot with ball-bush joints and springs. The second and third plates allow X-Y direction as LM guides. The bottom of the third plate is designed that various circular cones can be easily attached according to the shape of the hole. The developed system was implemented for its effectiveness that its measurement accuracy is less than 0.05mm.

  • This study presents a new interleaved three-level zero-voltage switching (ZVS) converter for high-voltage and high-current applications. Two circuit cells are operated with interleaved pulse-width modulation in the proposed converter to reduce the current ripple at the input and output sides, as well as to decrease the current rating of output inductors for high-load-current applications. Each circuit cell includes one half-bridge converter and one three-level converter at the primary side. At the secondary side, the transformer windings of two converters are connected in series to reduce the size of the output inductor or switching current in the output capacitor. Based on the three-level circuit topology, the voltage stress of power switches is clamped at $V_{in}/2$. Thus, MOSFETs with 500 V voltage rating can be used at 800 V input voltage converters. The output capacitance of the power switch and the leakage inductance (or external inductance) are resonant at the transition interval. Therefore, power switches can be turned on under ZVS. Finally, experiments verify the effectiveness of the proposed converter.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of a trigger circuit which can be series connected with main pulse circuit for a xenon flash lamp driver. For generating high voltage, the trigger circuit is designed as an inductive energy storage pulsed power modulator with 2 state step-up circuit consisting of a boost converter and a flyback circuit. In order to guarantee pulse width, a resonant capacitor on the output side of the flyback circuit is designed. This capacitor limits the output voltage to protect the flyback switch. In addition, to protect another power supply of xenon flash lamp driver from trigger pulse, the high voltage transformer which can carry the full current of main pulse is designed. To verify the proposed design, the trigger circuit is developed with the specification of maximum 23 kV, 0.6 J/pulse output and tested with a xenon flash lamp driver consisting of a main pulse circuit and a simmer circuit.
