  • As the survey results of cultivation area, farmhouse, yield and income to clarify the effect of PO Film on Korean melon industry in Seongju region, the covering areas of PE film of Korea, Kyungsangbuk-do and Seongju-gun in 2014 were decreased 91.5%, 94.9% and 95.2% as to 2010. In contrary, the covering areas of PO film of Korea, Kyungsangbuk-do and Seongju-gun in 2014 were increased 342.5%, 500% and 825% as to 2010. The cultivation area and farmhouse in 2015 were decreased 8.8% and 11.9% than those in 2010. The yield and production in 2015 were 38.2% and 25.9% increased han those in 2010. The gross and net income in 2015 were 1.3 and 2.7 times increased than those in 2010. Finally, to change as PO film, the productivity will be increased. And cleaning work and noxious materials discharge will be decreased.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate on agronomic characteristics, forage quality and dry matter (DM) yields of mugwort (Artemisia princeps Pamp.) collected different region at Seongju in Kyeongbuk from 2014 to 2015. The experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design with three replications. Mugwort was planted on $17^{th}$ March, 2014 and harvested on $13^{th}$ September, 2014 and on $25^{th}$ May and $9^{th}$ September, 2015. DM yields of Dalsung(1), Seongju B.(1), Dalsung(2) and Sajuarissuk were 17.3, 16.8, 16.7 and $16.7(MT\;ha^{-1})$, respectively and the DM yields of those were higher (p<0.05) than the other mugworts in 2014. In 2015, DM yields of Dalsung(1), Dalsung(2), Seongju B.(1), and Sajuarissuk were 19.5, 19.3, 18.4 and $18.4(MT\;ha^{-1})$, respectively and DM yields of those were higher (p<0.05) than the others. DDM(digestable dry matter) content of mugworts was a range of 56.4 to 60.8% and that of Sajabalssuk, 60.8% was the highest. Seongju B.(1) 58.8% was higher than Seongju B.(2) 56.4% but there were no difference among the Dalsung(1) 58.4%, Dalsung(2) 58.1%, Sajuarissuk 57.7% and Yeongcheon. The result of this study indicated that Dalsung(1), Dalsung(2), Sajuarissuk and Seongju B.(1) would be recommendable for forage production.

  • Results on growth and fruit elongation and quality by rootstock sort of oriental melon were followed; Growth of upper part of oriental melon was faster grafted seedlings than self-root seedlings and among grafted seedlings, Elite and Shintozoa rootstocks were better than Hongtozoa. Growth of Elite and Shintozoa rootstocks, stem length and leaf number, were laster after 30 days of seedling transplant. Fruit elongation had no difference in rootstocks sort. Fruit weight was higher Elite and Shintozoa grafted seedlings than self-root seedlings but soluble solid contents of fruit was higher self root seedlings, $13.9^{\circ}Brix$, than Elite grafted seedlings, $12.5^{\circ}Brix$.

  • This study was conducted to improve light environment of oriental melon cultivation in winter season. Three polyolefin foreign films (J-1, J-2, J-3) and three polyethylene domestic films (K-1, K-2, K-3) with different film thickness, ultraviolet ray interception and infrared ray absorption were used. As the result of this experiment, soluble solid of oriental melon fruit in K-3 was $14.3^{\circ}Brix$, those in J-3 and J-2 were higher by 1.3 and $0.8^{\circ}Brix$, respectively. Chromaticity (a value) of pericarp in K-3 was 0.5, those in J-3, J-1 and J-2 were higher by 3.3, 2.3 and 1.9, respectively. Especially, fermented and malformed fruit rates in J-1, J-2 and J-3 were decreased and marketable fruit rates were increased. Marketable yield in K-3 was 1,622 kg per 10a, those in J-1, J-3 and J-2 were increased by 31.2%, 23.8% and 18.5% compare to K-3, respectively. In this study, Polyolefin films (J-1, J-2, J-3) with thickness and infrared ray absorption ratio keeping higher heat conservation, therefore, soluble solid and chromaticity of fruit were increased, fermented fruit rate was decreased, and marketable fruit rate and yield were increased.

  • This experiment was conducted to improve light environment of oriental melon cultivation in winter season. Three polyolefin (J-1, J-2 and J-3), two polyethylene (K-1 and K-2) films and K-3 commonly used in farmhouses, with different film thickness, ultraviolet ray interception and infrared ray absorption ratio were used. Heat conservation of J-2 was highest, compare to K-3, J-3 and J-1. Early growth of J-1, J-2 and J-3 were faster than K-3, and Days required to harvest of K-3 were shortened about 10 days. Marketable yield of K-3 was 991kg per 10a, those of J-1, J-2, J-3, K-1 and K-2 were increased 21%, 37%, 24%, 13% and 4% compare to K-3, respectively. Especially, harvesting of J-1, J-2, J-3 and K-1 were focused on early (50%) and middle stage (40%). Polyolefin with higher heat conservation improved growth and harvesting in early and shortened days to harvesting in winter season.

  • This experiment was conducted to make eatable fruit of oriental melon with peel, we covered oriental melon fruit with pear, apple and grape paper bag. Temperature inside paper bags was lower than air temperature in daytime but reversed in night. Relative humidity inside paper bags was higher than outside humidity in daytime but reversed in night. Covering with paper bags seemed to make fruit length shorter, fruit width narrower, flesh thickness thinner and fruit weight heavier but no difference was found among treatments. Soluble solid contents of flesh and placenta seemed lower with covering with paper bags but also difference did not find among treatments. Increasing of soluble solid contents of fruits was observed at 5 days after removing paper bags but not immediately at removing paper bags. Fruit hardness and chromaticity were dropped by covering paper bags. Decrease of fruit hardness by covering paper bags made more eatable with peel but more study have to be taken to improve chromaticity and soluble solid of fruits.

  • We report the draft genome sequence of Bacillus thuringiensis serovar aizawai AS23, an insecticidal strain targeting lepidopteran pests, which was isolated from the rhizosphere of Korean melon (Cucumis melo L.). The genome of strain AS23 comprising 6,846,584 bp with a G + C content of 34.83% was assembled to 11 contigs obtained using hybrid assembly. Additionally, we mined the genome for pesticidal genes, identifying several insecticidal genes, including Cry1Aa3, Cry1Ca9, Cry1Da2, Cry1Ia44, Cry2Ab41, Cry9Ea9, Spp1Aa1, and Vip3Aa86.
