Diet composition of the Korean wild boar Sus scrofa coreanus (Suidae) at Mt. Jeombongsan, Korea

  • Background: Korean wild boars (Sus scrofa coreanus Heude), because of their adaptability, are a widespread large mammal; however, they sometimes cause problems by invading farms and eating the crops, creating insufficiencies of some foods in South Korea. To understand the diet composition of Korean wild boars according to sex and body size, we collected their feces from Mt. Jeombongsan, Seoraksan National Park, South Korea. The sizes of fecal samples were measured, and genomic DNA was extracted from the samples. We amplified specific loci targeting plants (rbcL and trnL) and animals (COI) to detect the food sources of this omnivore and amplified the ZF and SRY regions to determine the sex. Results: In the wild boar feces, Rosaceae and Bryophyte were the most frequently detected plant food sources at the family level and Diptera and Haplotaxida were the most frequently detected animal food sources at the order level. As a result of sex determination, the sex ratio of wild boars collected in the Mt. Jeombongsan area was approximately 1:1. Our result suggested that there is no significant difference between the diet composition of male and female boars. Based on the average cross-sectional area of the feces, the top 25% were classified into the large body size group and the bottom 25% were classified into the small body size group. The large body size group mainly preferred Actinidiaceae, and the small body size group most frequently consumed Fagaceae. The diet of the large body size group was more diverse than the small body size group. Conclusions: Our results showed that the wild boars preferred Rosaceae, especially Sanguisorba and Filipendula, as plant food sources, and Diptera and Coleoptera of Insecta as animal food sources. Based on the results, the dietary preferences of wild boar appear to be distinguished by not their sex but their body size. Our study could help to elucidate the feeding ecology and population structure of wild boar, as well as address conservation and management issues.

생태·자연도 이의신청지역의 원인 분석 (The Analysis on Causes of Areas with Public Appeals to the Ecosystem and Nature Map)

  • The objective of this study is to seek for improvement measures to make the Ecosystem and Nature Map by analyzing causes for grade changes and distributional characteristics of areas with public objections to the Ecosystem and Nature Map notified by e-official gazette from 2014 to June 2016. The receipt of public appeals has been recently increased from average 23 cases a year(2007-2013) to average 33 cases a year(2014-June 2016) while there were 42 areas with public appeals for less than the minimum area($62,500m^2$) for the evaluation of grade of the Ecosystem and Nature Map. Most of the public appeals focused on the 1st grade zone of the Ecosystem and Nature Map. Before grade changes by public appeals, the 1st grade zone of the Ecosystem and Nature Map were 76.0% of the whole areas with public appeals. However, after grade changes by public appeals, it was rapidly decreased to 25.2%, which means that a lot of the 1st grade zone with public appeals were lowered. In the results of analyzing the distributional characteristics of areas with public appeals, they were mostly distributed in lowland(less than 250m altitude), section with $10{\sim}20^{\circ}$ slope, and areas close to or within 100m from built-up area. Regarding areas with public appeals, the biggest time difference between the period of the existing research by National Ecosystem Survey and the period of notice after completing the treatment of public appeals was 18 years while areas showing 6-15 years of time difference were about 70%. Thus, there were huge differences in time of research and notice. Also, the biggest causes for grade changes were boundary errors caused by small-scale survey, and then followed by changes in evaluation of endangered species and occurrence of built-up area and damaged land. Analyzing areas with public appeals in each evaluation item of the Ecosystem and Nature Map, vegetation part was 73.0%, and endangered species area was 23.1% while topography and wetland was less.

금개구리 서식지 적합성 지수(HSI) 모델 개발을 위한 기초 연구 (A Basic Research for the Development of Habitat Suitability Index Model of Pelophylax chosenicus)

  • This study was conducted as a basic study to develop the HSI(Habitat Suitability Index) model of Pelophylax chosenicus based on the research on the ecological and habitat status of Pelophylax chosenicus and the literature research on the HSI model. The habitat variables of Pelophylax chosenicus are the altitude of the spawning pond, the habitat area, the distance from wetland, the soil(aptitude grade for paddy field), the place for eating such as paddy field and wetlands(land cover) and the distance from Predator(Lithobates catesbeianus) distribution area. Based on the existing literature of Pelophylax chosenicus, the results of field surveys and expert opinions, the SI(Suitability Index) model and HSI model were developed and applied to the site to examine the applicability of the HSI model. As a result of application, SI 4 and SI 5 with varying SI values seem to have a major influence on the HSI. In addition, it is considered that the HSI model is an arithmetic mean of SI models, which has a major impact on HSI. The HSI model can be an important basis for the habitat evaluation and restoration model of Pelophylax chosenicus. In particular, it is highly applicable to the selection and evaluation of alternative habitats for Pelophylax chosenicus.

반변천 일대 수달 서식지 적합성 지수(HSI) 모델을 활용한 대체서식지 평가 (Evaluation of Alternative Habitats Using Habitat Suitability Index Model of Lutra lutra in Banbyeoncheon Stream)

  • This study was conducted to quantitatively evaluate and analyze the alternative habitats using the HSI(Habitat Suitability Index) model of Lutra lutra in Banbyeoncheon Stream. Six variables were selected as habitat variables for Lutra lutra, including distance from waterfront, land cover within 1km from waterfront, presence of alluvial island, area of inland water and wetland, distance from roads and urbanized arid areas, and distance from aquaculture farm. The SI(Suitability Index) model and HSI model were developed based on the existing literature of Lutra lutra, the results of field surveys and expert opinions, and applied to the alternative habitats to examine the applicability of the HSI model. The results of this study can provide information on habitat evaluation to prevent the extinction of endangered Lutra lutra. In particular, it is highly applicable to the selection and evaluation of alternative habitats for Lutra lutra.

Bird Diversity and Environmental Correlates in the Mulchat-oream Wetlands of the Jeju Islands, South Korea

  • This study was conducted from March 2018 to December 2019 to identify bird diversity and environmental correlates within the Mulchat-oream wetlands in the Jeju Islands of South Korea. A total of 255 individual belonging to 37 species were recorded form Mulchat-oream. The observation produced a species diversity of 3.14, species richness of 6.54 and species evenness of 0.88 in 2018, and in 2019, the observed species diversity was 3.02, species richness was 6.56 and species evenness was 0.84. The highly dominant species are composed of Passeriformes. The absence of diverse submerged plants, deep water depth and isolated geographical locations makes difficult for aquatic birds to prefer this area, and this has resulted in the dominance of Passeriformes. The appearance of the birds was the lowest in the winter and highest during the summer. The analysis showed that the species richness and evenness increased with an increase in temperature and precipitation. However, the number of species appearing during Mulchat-oream significantly dependent on the temperature (P<0.001, df=2). To date, there has been little research on bird diversity together with environmental factors for the Hallasan National Park. This study shows the environmental factors and seasonal patterns that affect bird population.

중학생의 가족건강성에 따른 미래 부모역할 인식 (The Family Strengths and Perceptions of Future Parent's Roles in Middle School Students)

  • This study focused on the traits of variables related to parenthood, family strengths and perceptions of future parent's roles. The subjects were the 409 middle school students in Gwangju. Using structured questionnaire surveyed between 2007. 6. 20 and 2007. 6. 26. Data were analyzed with Frequency, Percentage, Mean, Std, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, T-test, Chi-Square, ANOVA, and Duncan's test using SPSS/PC WIN 14.0 program. The major findings were as follows: 1. When asked if you married, most students replied "yes", and childbirth plan replied "yes". The 78.2 percent of schoolgirls and 74.6 percent of schoolboys responded that responsibility of bringing up children was man and wife. The most important Parental meaning was 'fosterer'. The middle school students' family strengths scores were higher than median(3.00). Over all, the perceptions of future parent's roles were high. 2. Perceptions of future parent's roles showed partially significant difference according to the most important Parental meaning, responsibility of bringing up children, intimacy with parent, dual-income family, and family strengths.

편의식품 이용 실태에 관한 연구 (A Survey of the Behaviors on Fast Food Restaurants)

  • This study understands the actual conditions and problems for making traditional Korean food into the fast food. 1. Convenience to eat and nice atmosphere with friends (25%) are the best motive of visiting fast food restaurant. 2. The frequency of eating fast food is one to three times a month and the result of analysis on interrelation of human being in social anthropology represents that the fast food represents negative (-) interrelation by increasing of the age. The opinion about the fast food's nutrition is that the fast food lacks the nutrition (23.3%) and has excessive fat (40%). 3. The consumers were satisfied with the atmosphere of the fast food restaurant and unsatisfied with it's high prices. 4. The consumers' opinion on making the traditional food into a fast food was 66.4%. The consumers' opinions on traditional food to be improved are the sanitation (37.9%), the cookery (25%), the taste (11.7%), the nutrition (10.7%) and the opinions about inheritance of the traditional food is that 87.5% of people gave positive responses.
