Objective : This study is to verify effect of a sensory integration (SI) intervention on sensory processing of children with sensory modulation disorder (SMD), and to explore how the SI intervention affect play, socialization, occupational performance and occupational satisfaction of those children. Method : Five children with developmental disabilities living in metropolitan were diagnosed as SMD by the Sensory History Interview (SHI) and Short Sensory Profile (SSP). The SMD children undergone the 48 sessions of 50 min intervention twice in a week for six months and took the Revised Knox Preschool Play Scale(RKPPS), Social maturity test, Canadian Occupational Performance Measure(COPM), and Japanese Sensory Inventory Revised(JSI-2) before- and after the intervention. The result data analyzed by the Wilcoxon matched-pair signed rank test. Results : All data of post-intervention differed significantly; RKPPS(Z=-2.023, p=.043), Social maturity test(Z=-2.023, p=.043); occupational performance(Z=-2.023, p=.043); satisfaction(Z=-2.032, p=.042); and tactile system of JSI-2(Z=-2.032, p=.042). Conclusions : The results advocate that sensory integration intervention is effective in improving tactile processing, play, socialization, occupational performance, and occupational satisfaction of child with SMD. It is found that sensory integration intervention improves not only one's occupational performance but also underlying components of the performance. In order to generalize this conclusion, further studies need to be done with more number of subjects and consideration of environmental factors. Striving for more reliable and valid methods of data collection is also suggested.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in social quotient and sensory processing function between completed-toileting and incomplete-toileting children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We aims to provide a basis for the training of children with autism spectrum disorders. Methods : The subjects of this research were children with ASD, aged from 4 to 7, receiving sensory integration therapy at the H-Child Development Research Center in Busan, South Korea. After recruiting 30 parents who had children with ASD, we interviewed them and we divided their children into completed-toileting group and incomplete-toileting group based on the past researches. We assessed them using the Social Maturity Scale and Sensory Profile. Spearman correlation was used to analyze between the sensory processing score and social quotient. Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the Sensory Profile scores of the two groups. Results : The social quotient was correlated with the sensory processing score in the most of component as for auditory processing, vestibular processing, touch processing, multisensory processing, orosensory processing, except for visual processing. The groups of completed-toileting and incomplete-toileting group showed statistically significant intergroup difference in sensory seeking, emotional reactive, oral-sensory sensitivity, and inattention/distractibility in the sensory factor region. No statistically significant difference from intergroup was observed in any modulation areas, nor in behavioral & emotional response domains. Conclusion : A significant intergroup difference was observed in the most of sensory processing areas, except for modulation areas and behavioral & emotional response domains. The result revealed that toileting is significantly correlated with sensory processing. Therefore, this study suggests that the sensory processing function should be considered in the toilet training of children with ASD.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of therapeutic listening on task performance, auditory behavior problems, and attention in children with sensory modulation disorder. Methods : Sixteen children aged four to seven years who were classified as children with sensory modulation disorder were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (n = 8) or the control group (n = 8). From July 1 to October 18, 2017, both groups participated in sensory integration programs, while therapeutic listening training was administered only to the experimental group. Sensory integration therapy was conducted in two sessions per week for six weeks (12 sessions); each session consisted of 40 minutes of therapy and 10 minutes of parent education. Therapeutic listening was conducted in three thirty-minute sessions per week for six weeks (18 sessions). We used the Canadian Occupation Performance Measure (COPM) to evaluate changes in the participants' occupational performance between pre- and post-intervention. We used Fisher's Auditory Problems Checklist (FAPC) to observe changes in behavioral problems related to hearing. The Child Attention Scale for Teacher (CAST) was used to evaluate changes in attention. Results : No significant differences pre- and post-intervention between the two groups were observed. The participants' auditory behavioral problems improved significantly in the experimental group, but no significant difference was found between the two groups. There was no significant difference in attention between the two groups, but there was a significant difference between the two groups in the "adaptability" and "emotion" domains (p < .05). Conclusion : The results suggest that therapeutic listening training has a positive effect on reducing problematic behaviors related to hearing and improving the occupational performance of children with sensory modulation disorder. This study provides a basis for improving the sensory processing ability of children with sensory modulation disorder by applying listening training in the clinical field and at home.

The suck/swallow/breathe(SSB) synchrony, serving as the earlist primary motor mechanism, is the rhythmical, coordinated pattern of sucking, swallowing and breathing. The development of an intact SSB is an important precursor for further sensorimotor and cognitive development including speech and language development, state regulation, postural control, feeding, eye/hand coordination and social/emotional development. Arousal means a neurological mechanism for preparing one's body to orienting stimulus. Its levels are regulated with an interaction of the reticular formation, the limbic system, the hypothalamus and the autonomic nervous system. General strategies such as blowing, sucking, chewing, munching and licking to effectively modulate arousal state are related to SSB. The SSB synchrony is an important treatment principle for children with sensory integration disorder and problems with the modulation of arousal. The purpose of this article is to review concepts of SSB synchrony and the underlying relation between the modulation of arousal and SSB synchrony.
Transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) receptors are major polymodal nociceptors that generate primary pain responses in the peripheral nerve endings of the dorsal root ganglion neurons. Recently, we reported that the activation of TRPA1 receptors by reactive oxygen species (ROS) signaling, which is triggered by Ca2+ influx through T-type Ca2+ channels, contributes to prolonged pain responses induced by jellyfish toxin. In this review, we focus on the characteristics of the TRPA1 receptor involved in intracellular signaling as a secondary pain modulator. Unlike other transient receptor potential receptors, TRPA1 receptors can induce membrane depolarization by ROS without exogenous stimuli in peripheral and central sensory neurons. Therefore, it is important to identify the functional characteristics of TRPA1 receptors to understand pain modulation under several pathogenic conditions such as neuropathic pain syndromes and autoimmune diseases, which are mediated by oxidative signaling to cause chronic pain in the sensory system.

Objective : To evaluate the sensory processing ability in relation to parenting stress and find the sensory modulation areas affecting the parenting stress in disabled children Methods : Parents of 124 children with disabilities between 3 to 7 years receiving occupational therapy in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do made out the questionnaire and in items of questionnaire, Short Sensory Profile and Parenting Stress Index of short form was included. Results : Among general information, parenting stress of parents had significant correlation with the degree of disability and correlation with the lower level 2 of Parenting Stress Index. The more sensory processing disability was increased, the more parenting stress was increased. Parenting stress showed the significant correlation with movement sensitivity area and under-responsiveness/behaivor area seeking specific stimulation among sensory processing areas and had significant correlation with tactile sensitivity and auditory filtering. Sensory processing areas which affect the most the Parenting Stress were movement sensitivity and under-responsiveness/behaivor area seeking the specific behavior among sensory control disabilities. Conclusion : The parenting stress of parents with the disabled children had the correlation with sensory processing ability. The difficulty of sensory processing increased the parenting stress. Hence, in order to improve children's sensory processing ability, the appropriately coping program should be developed and the appropriate intervention for improvement of sensory processing ability of children will be necessary.

Background: Understanding the stability of quantitative sensory tests (QSTs) over time is important to aid clinicians in selecting a battery of tests for assessing and monitoring patients. This study evaluated the short- and long-term reliability of selected QSTs. Methods: Twenty healthy women participated in three experimental sessions: Baseline, 2 weeks, and 6 months. Measurements included pressure pain thresholds (PPT) in the neck, upper back, and leg; Pressure-cuff pain tolerance around the upper-arm; conditioned pain modulation during a pressure-cuff stimulus; and referred pain following a suprathreshold pressure stimulation. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and minimum detectable change (MDC) were calculated. Results: Reliability for PPT was excellent for all sites at 2 weeks (ICC, 0.96-0.99; MDC, 22-55 kPa) and from good to excellent at 6 months (ICC, 0.88-0.95; MDC, 47-91 kPa). ICC for pressure-cuff pain tolerance indicated excellent reliability at both times (0.91-0.97). For conditioned pain modulation, reliability was moderate for all sites at 2 weeks (ICC, 0.57-0.74; MDC, 24%-35%), while it was moderate at the neck (ICC, 0.54; MDC, 27%) and poor at the upper back and leg at 6 months. ICC for referred pain areas was excellent at 2 weeks (0.90) and good at 6 months (0.86). Conclusions: PPT, pressure pain tolerance, and pressure-induced referred pain should be considered reliable procedures to assess the pain-sensory profile over time. In contrast, conditioned pain modulation was shown to be unstable. Future studies prospectively analyzing the pain-sensory profile will be able to better calculate appropriate sample sizes.
We have characterized the aftereffects of impulse activities on the transmission of afferent sensory to the primary somatosensory (SI) cortex of the anesthetized rats (n=22). Following conditioning stimulation (CS, 10 sec, either 5 Hz or 200 Hz) to the receptive field (RF), quantitative determination of the changes of afferent sensory transmission was done by generating post-stimulus time histogram of unit response to the testing stimulation (TS, at 0.5 Hz) to the RF center (RFC) for 60 min. In one group of experiments, CS was delivered to the RF center (RFC). In another group of experiments, CSs were simultaneously given to both RFC and RF outside (RFO, either forepaw or hindpaw). CS of 5 Hz to RFC exerted irreversible facilitation of sensory transmissions evoked by TS. Simultaneous CSs of 5 Hz to RFC and hindpaw RFO exerted reversible suppression of afferent transmission. However, CSs of 5 Hz to RFC and forepaw RFO did not significantly altered afferent sensory transmission to SI cortex neurons. CS of 200 Hz to RFC exerted irreversible suppression of sensory transmissions up to 60 min of experimental period. Simultaneous CSs of 200 Hz to RFC and RFO did not significantly altered afferent sensory transmission to SI cortex neurons. The profiles of CS-induced modulation of afferent sensory transmission were significantly different between two CS conditions. Thus, this study suggests that activity-dependent modulation of afferent transmission from a RF center to the SI cortex may be significantly altered when remote body part was simultaneously activated.

Objective : This study aims to ascertain the effect of oral activity and sensory integration therapy on drool and play using oral toys in children with developmental delays. Methods : The participants of the study were two children (2 years and 8 months) experiencing developmental delays with sensory modulation problems in their oral sensory faculties. The research design was multi-baseline design cross-subjects among single-subject research ABA. Target behaviors were measured by drooling and interest and concentration in play using oral toys through the Goal Attachment Scale (GAS). In the 10 sessions that the children underwent during the intervention period (B), oral activity and proprioception-vestibular sensory integration therapy were applied. Results : The GAS of drooling improved from 0.25 for child A and -0.5 for child B during the baseline to 1.88 for child A and 1.4 for child B during the intervention period. The follow-up was 3 for both child A and child B. Meanwhile, the GAS of play during the baseline was -0.75 for child A and 0.75 for child B, and 1.9 for child A and 1.1 for child B during the intervention period. The follow-up was 1.33 for child A and 2 for child B. Conclusion : Oral activity and proprioceptive-vestibular sensory integration therapy are effective in drooling and playing with oral toys in children with sensory modulation problems in their oral sensory faculties.

Objective : The purpose of this study were to examine internal reliability and internal validity for Short Sensory Profile(SSP) and to suggest the useful criteria for sensory processing abilities in Korean culture. Methods : The Short Sensory Profile(SSP) was completed by mothers of 304 children typically developing between 3 to 10 years of age in those preschool, kindergarten and elementary school located Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The total agency for this study was 14 facilities and the period of study was from July, 2002 to June, 2003. Kim Mi Sun(2001) translated and modified the Short Sensory Profile that Macintoshi developed and the tool for the study was used. The data were analyzed with reliability test and Pearson's correlation. Results : 1. Internal reliability of the total tests and sections was estimated by calculating Cronbach's Alphas. Reliability value of the total tests was .889. 2. For internal validity the correlations range from .131 to .575 in magnitude, suggesting that the sections of the Short Sensory Profile tap relatively unique constructs and support the factor structure developed. 3. The total score of the Short Sensory Profile(SSP) range from 118 to 190, mean and SD was 163.12, 14.87. 4. Of 403 children represented by the survey, 32 children(10.5%) met criteria for sensory processing disorders based upon parental perceptions. 5. Cut scores were determined by computing the raw score cut scores for -1 SD and -2 SD. The normal group of sensory processing abilities had score which range from 190 to 149, the probable problem group had score which range from 148 to 134, and the definite problem group had score which range from 133 to 138. Conclusion : Findings from the above study suggest that Short Sensory Profile be the screening tool for sensory processing disorders within Korean culture. Further research is needed to compare with children with the various sensory processing disabilities(PDD, LD, CP ect,).
