Sensor faults in nuclear power plant instrumentation have the potential to spread negative effects from wrong signals that can cause an accident misdiagnosis by plant operators. To detect sensor faults and make accurate accident diagnoses, prior studies have developed a supervised learning-based sensor fault detection model and an accident diagnosis model with faulty sensor isolation. Even though the developed neural network models demonstrated satisfactory performance, their diagnosis performance should be reevaluated considering real-time connection. When operating in real-time, the diagnosis model is expected to indiscriminately accept fault data before receiving delayed fault information transferred from the previous fault detection model. The uncertainty of neural networks can also have a significant impact following the sensor fault features. In the present work, a pilot study was conducted to connect two models and observe actual outcomes from a real-time application with an integrated system. While the initial results showed an overall successful diagnosis, some issues were observed. To recover the diagnosis performance degradations, additive logics were applied to minimize the diagnosis failures that were not observed in the previous validations of the separate models. The results of a case study were then analyzed in terms of the real-time diagnosis outputs that plant operators would actually face in an emergency situation.
A number of sensing techniques have been implemented for detecting defects in civil infrastructures instead of onsite human inspections in structural health monitoring. However, the issue of faults in sensors has not received much attention. This issue may lead to incorrect interpretation of data and false alarms. To overcome these challenges, this article presents a deep learning-based method with a new architecture of Stateful Long Short Term Memory Neural Networks (S-LSTM NN) for detecting sensor fault without going into details of the fault features. As LSTMs are capable of learning data features automatically, and the proposed method works without an accurate mathematical model. The detection of four types of sensor faults are studied in this paper. Non-stationary acceleration responses of a three-span continuous bridge when under operational conditions are studied. A deep network model is applied to the measured bridge data with estimation to detect the sensor fault. Another set of sensor output data is used to supervise the network parameters and backpropagation algorithm to fine tune the parameters to establish a deep self-coding network model. The response residuals between the true value and the predicted value of the deep S-LSTM network was statistically analyzed to determine the fault threshold of sensor. Experimental study with a cable-stayed bridge further indicated that the proposed method is robust in the detection of the sensor fault.
The position sensors used in a magnetic bearing system are desirable to provide some degree of fault-tolerance as the rotor position is necessary for the feedback control to overcome the open-loop instability. In this paper, we propose an inductive position sensor that can cope with a partial fault in the sensor. The sensor has multiple poles which can be combined to sense the in-plane motion of the rotor. When a high-frequency voltage signal drives each pole of the sensor, the resulting current in the sensor coil contains information regarding the rotor position. The signal processing circuit of the sensor extracts this position information. In this paper, we used the magnetic circuit model of the sensor that shows the analytical relationship between the sensor output and the rotor motion. The multi-polar structure of the sensor makes it possible to introduce redundancy which can be exploited for fault-tolerant operation. The proposed sensor is applied to a magnetically levitated turbo-molecular vacuum pump. Experimental results validate the fault-tolerance algorithm.
Fault diagnosis depends critically on the selection of sensors monitoring crucial process variables. Boolean network (BN) is composed of nodes and directed edges, where the node state is quantized to the Boolean values of True or False and is determined by the logical functions of the network parameters and the states of other nodes with edges directed to this node. Since BN can describe the fault propagation in a sensor network, it can be applied to propose sensor selection strategy for fault diagnosis. In this article, a sufficient condition for parameter identifiability of BN is first proposed, based on which the sufficient condition for fault identifiability of a sensor network is given. Then, the fault identifiability condition induces a sensor selection strategy for sensor selection. Finally, the theoretical result is applied to the fault diagnosis-oriented sensor selection for a nuclear heating reactor plant, and both the numerical computation and simulation results verify the feasibility of the newly built BN-based sensor selection strategy.
A controller and sensor fault tolerant system jot a steam generator is designed with fuzzy logic. A structure of the : proposed fault tolerant redundant system is composed of a supervisor and two fuzzy weighting modulators. A supervisor alternatively checks a controlled and a sensor induced performances to identify Which Part, a controller or a sensor, is faulty. In order to analyze controller induced performance both an error and a charge in error of the system output an chosen as fuzzy variables. The fuzzy logic jot a sensor induced performance uses two variables : a deviation between two sensor outputs and its frequency, Fuzzy weighting modulator generates an output signal compensated for faulty input signal. Simulations show that the : proposed fault tolerant control scheme jot a steam generator regulates welt water level by suppressing fault effect of either controllers or sensors. Therefore through duplicating sensors and controllers with the proposed fault tolerant scheme, both a reliability of a steam generator control and sensor system and that of a power plant increase even mote.
We propose an ART2 neural network-based fault diagnosis method to diagnose of sensor in the gas monitoring system. In the proposed method, using thermal modulation of operating temperature of sensor, the signal patterns are extracted from the voltage of load resistance. Also, fault classifier by ART2 NN (adaptive resonance theory 2 neural network) with uneven vigilance parameters is used for fault isolation. The performances of the proposed fault diagnosis method are shown by simulation results using real data obtained from the gas monitoring system.

This paper presents a fault detection strategy that discriminates the faulty sensor and that detects the component fault using a bank of observers for the system in which sensor fault and component fault can occur simultaneously. Observers as many as the number of measurements are designed, and each observer uses measurements excluding sequentially one measurement, to estimate the state variables. The faulty sensor can be found out by comparing each state variable from different observer. Next, component fault can be detected by using measurements from the sensors excluding the faulty sensor. The suggested strategy is applied to a nonisothermal, series reaction with unknown reaction kinetics in a CSTR. This strategy is found out to perform well even in the case that the sensor and component fault occur simultaneously. Since each observer is designed to be independent of reaction kinetics, this strategy is not affected by the model uncertainty and nonlinearity of the reaction kinetics.
This paper presents a robust fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control lot the actuator and sensor faults in the closed-loop systems affected by unknown inputs or disturbances. The fault diagnostic scheme is based on the residual set generation by using robust Parity space approach. Residual set is evaluated through the threshold test and then fault is isolated according to the decision logic table. Once the fault diagnosis module indicates which actuator or sensor is faulty, the fault magnitude is estimated by using the disturbance-decoupled optimal state estimation and a new additive control law is added to the nominal one to override the fault effect on the system. Simulation results show that the method has definite fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control ability against actuator and sensor faults.
A novel fault diagnosis method based on likelihood decomposition is proposed for linear stochastic systems described by autoregressive (AR) model. Assuming that at some time instant .tau. the fault of one of the following two types is occurs: innovation fault (actuator fault); and observation fault (sensor fault), the log-likelihood function is decomposed into two components based on the observations before and after .tau., respectively, Then, the type of the fault is determined by comparing the log-likelihoods corresponding two types of faults. Numerical examples demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed diagnosis method.
For automated vehicles, the integrity and fault tolerance of environment perception sensor have been an important issue. This paper presents radar, vision, lidar(laser radar) fusion-based fault detection algorithm for autonomous vehicles. In this paper, characteristics of each sensor are shown. And the error of states of moving targets estimated by each sensor is analyzed to present the method to detect fault of environment sensors by characteristic of this error. Each estimation of moving targets isperformed by EKF/IMM method. To guarantee the reliability of fault detection algorithm of environment sensor, various driving data in several types of road is analyzed.
