A mathematical model describing gear pump flow degradation in the presense of abrasive particles is presented. The model considers the operating parameters as Sommerfeld number, so that contamination sensitivity test results could be conversed to field application to predict contamination service life. A method to estimate the volumetric efficiency and the contamination level of a pump is proposed by measuring the temperature differences in the fluid. Test results show the validity of the theoretical establishments.
A more accurate expression for effective viscosity is obtained using a linear regression of the data from Fukui-Kaneko's model, which are obtained through numerical calculations based on the linearized Boltzmann equation. Veijola and Turowski's expression is adopted as a base function for effective viscosity. The four coefficients in that equation are optimized, and sensitivity analysis is conducted for these coefficients. The results show that the coefficient for the first-order Knudsen number is the most accurate, whereas the coefficient in the exponential of the Knudsen number is the least accurate compared with Fukui-Kaneko's results. The expression for effective viscosity is accurate within 0.02% rms of Fukui-Kaneko's results for the inverse Knudsen numbers from 0.01 to 100 and surface accommodation coefficients ranging from 0.7 to 1.
A new algorithm is proposed to determine optimal accelerometer locations (OAL) when a structure is identified by frequency domain system identification (SI) method. As a result, a guideline is presented for selecting OAL which can reflect modal response of a structure properly. The guideline is to provide a minimum number of necessary accelerometers with the variation in the number of measurable target modes. To determine OAL for SI applications effectively, the modal sensitivity effective independence distribution vector (MS-EIDV) is developed with the likelihood function of measurements. By maximizing the likelihood of the occurrence of the measurements relative to the predictions, Fisher Information Matrix (FIM) is derived as a function of mode shape sensitivity. This paper also proposes a statistical approach in determining the structural parameters with a presumed parameter error which reflects the epistemic paradox between the determination of OAL and the application of a SI scheme. Numerical simulations have been carried out to examine the proposed OAL algorithm. A two-span multi-girder bridge and a two-span truss bridge were used for the simulation studies. To overcome a rank deficiency frequently occurred in inverting a FIM, the singular value decomposition scheme has been applied.
Monitoring large-scale civil engineering structures such as offshore platforms and high-large buildings requires a large number of sensors of different types. Innovative sensor data information technologies are very extremely important for data transmission, storage and retrieval of large volume sensor data generated from large sensor networks. How to obtain the optimal sensor set and placement is more and more concerned by researchers in vibration-based SHM. In this paper, a method of determining the sensor location which aims to extract the dynamic parameter effectively is presented. The method selects the number and place of sensor being installed on or in structure by through the tolerance domain statistical inference algorithm combined with second order sensitivity technology. The method proposal first finds and determines the sub-set sensors from the theoretic measure point derived from analytical model by the statistical tolerance domain procedure under the principle of modal effective independence. The second step is to judge whether the sorted out measured point set has sensitive to the dynamic change of structure by utilizing second order characteristic value sensitivity analysis. A 76-high-building benchmark mode and an offshore platform structure sensor optimal selection are demonstrated and result shows that the method is available and feasible.
Three methods of design sensitivity analysis for structures such as numerical method, analytical method and semi-analytical method have been developed for the last three decades. Although analytical design sensitivity analysis can provide very exact result, it is difficult to implement into practical design problems. Therefore, numerical method such as finite difference method is widely used to simply obtain the design sensitivity in most cases. The numerical differentiation is sufficiently accurate and reliable fur most linear problems. However, it turns out that the numerical differentiation is inefficient and inaccurate in nonlinear design sensitivity analysis because its computational cost depends on the number of design variables and large numerical errors can be included. Thus the semi-analytical method is more suitable for complicated design problems. Moreover, semi-analytical method is easy to be performed in design procedure, which can be coupled with an analysis solver such as commercial finite element package. In this paper, implementation procedure fur the semi-analytical design sensitivity analysis outside of the commercial finite element package is studied and the computational technique is proposed for evaluating the partial differentiation of internal nodal force, so called pseudo-load. Numerical examples coupled with commercial finite element package are shown to verify usefulness of proposed semi-analytical sensitivity analysis procedure and computational technique for pseudo-load.
Mature acetylcholinesterase (AChE) gene (gm, 1,836 bp) was cloned from the housefly and successfully expressed in the E. coli CodonPlus (DE3) RIL system (GM-E, 72 kDa) with a yield of 1,630 mU/g fresh cells. Using the gm, 10 kinds of mutants were constructed and expressed for enhancing sensitivity to insecticides. The sensitivity of these mutants to five kinds of organophosphate (OP) and three carbamate insecticides was investigated by measuring the apparent bimolecular inhibition constant ($k_i=k_2/K_d$). Surprisingly, the sensitivity of quadruple mutant IGFT was enhanced as much as 7-fold for acephate, 164-fold for demeton-S-methyl, 484-fold for dichlorvos, 523-fold for edifenphos, 30-fold for ethoprophos, 30-fold for benfuracarb, 404-fold for carbaryl, and 107-fold for furathiocarb, compared with that of GM-E, although the sensitivity of each single point mutant was slightly increased. These mutational studies indicated that (i) contradictory to Walsh et al. [39], the residue 327 is the important key residue for enhancing sensitivity as much as the residue 262, (ii) the residue 82 and additional residues of 234, 236, and 585 are also important, and (iii) sensitivity was cooperatively accelerated as the number of strategic mutations increased.
This investigation was performed to isolate and identify Staphylococcus sp. from air at the 25 sites in one hospital in Daegu. Drug sensitivity tests bacteriologically were also studied. The results are summarized as follows: 1. In gram staining of isolated colonies, the number of staphylococci strains was 959(70.2%) among 1367 collected in the morning, and 653(66.2%) among 987 collected in the afternoon. 2. The number of isolates was slightly higher in samples collected from the outpatient treatment rooms and wards in the main building than in samples from the other sites. 3. In biochemical tests of 1612 strains of isolates gram positive cocci, the number of coagulase positive strains was 584(36.2%) and coagulase negative 1028(63.8%). In experiments on growth on mannitol agar containing 7.5% NaCl and mannitol fermentation tests, the number of mannitol fermentation strains was 423(30.8%) and nonfermenter was 951(59.2%). 4. In antibiotic sensitivity tests of 746 identified strains of staphylococci, coagulase positive strains showed resistance in. higher portions to penicillin(89.7%), chloramphenicol(64.6%), gentamycin (52.1%) and tetracycline(45.2%), whereas in lower portions to kanamycin(39.2%) and apmicillin(33.1%). 5. Among coagulase negative and mannitol fermenting strains, higher portions showed resistance to chloramphenicol(76.5%), penicillin(69.8%) and ampicillin(63.6%), whereas lower portions showed resistance to kanamycin(48.8%), tetracycline(39.5%) and gentamycin(34.0%). 6. The number of strains showing multiple resistance to above 6 antibiotics were 15(52(19.8%) among coagulase positive and mannitol non-fermenter and 36(22.2%) among coagulase negative and mannitol fermenter.
This paper presents a damage assessment procedure applied to periodic spring mass systems using an eigenvalue sensitivity-based method. The damage is directly related to the stiffness reduction of the damage element. The natural frequencies of periodic structures with one single disorder are found by adopting the transfer matrix approach, consequently, the first order approximation of the natural frequencies with respect to the disordered stiffness in different elements is used to form the sensitivity matrix. The analysis shows that the sensitivity of natural frequencies to damage in different locations depends only on the mode number and the location of damage. The stiffness changes due to damage can be identified by solving a set of underdetermined equations based on the sensitivity matrix. The issues associated with many possible damage locations in large structural systems are addressed, and a means of improving the computational efficiency of damage detection while maintaining the accuracy for large periodic structures with limited available measured natural frequencies, is also introduced in this paper. The incomplete measurements and the effect of random error in terms of measurement noise in the natural frequencies are considered. Numerical results of a periodic spring-mass system of 20 degrees of freedom illustrate that the proposed method is simple and robust in locating single or multiple damages in a large periodic structure with a high computational efficiency.
This paper presents a number of verification case studies for a recently developed sensitivity/uncertainty code package. The code package, ROMUSE (Reduced Order Modeling based Uncertainty/Sensitivity Estimator) is an effort to provide an analysis tool to be used in conjunction with reactor core simulators, in particular the Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA) core simulator. ROMUSE has been written in C++ and is currently capable of performing various types of parameter perturbations and associated sensitivity analysis, uncertainty quantification, surrogate model construction and subspace analysis. The current version 2.0 has the capability to interface with the Design Analysis Kit for Optimization and Terascale Applications (DAKOTA) code, which gives ROMUSE access to the various algorithms implemented within DAKOTA, most importantly model calibration. The verification study is performed via two basic problems and two reactor physics models. The first problem is used to verify the ROMUSE single physics gradient-based range finding algorithm capability using an abstract quadratic model. The second problem is the Brusselator problem, which is a coupled problem representative of multi-physics problems. This problem is used to test the capability of constructing surrogates via ROMUSE-DAKOTA. Finally, light water reactor pin cell and sodium-cooled fast reactor fuel assembly problems are simulated via SCALE 6.1 to test ROMUSE capability for uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis purposes.
Although intensive development continues on innovative sensor systems, there is still considerable uncertainty in deciding on the number of sensors required and their locations in order to obtain adequate information on structural behavior. This paper is concerned with the sensor locations on a beam-structure for prognostic structural health monitoring. The purpose of this study is to investigate how to determine optimal sensor placement(OSP) from the sensitivity information of a known failure mode. The sensitivity of the forced vibration response of a beam to the variation of stiffness due to a crack is calculated analytically and used to determine the optimal sensor locations for the specified failure mode. The results of this method compared with the results of different OSP methods. The results have shown that the proposed method on optimal sensor placement is very effective in structural health monitoring.
