A Study on Improvement of Marine Clay through the Leaching Effect of Electrolyte Reaction in Electrode (전극의 전기분해 용출을 통한 해성점토의 개량에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the iron and aluminium electrode was put in marine clay which was taken from south coast in Korea to increase the undrained shear strength by inducing the densification and cementation between clay particles and precipitation which was developed by electrode decomposition. For raising the cementation rate and reducing treatment time, high electric current( 2.5A) was applied in each electrode at semi-pilot scale soil box with marine clay. After the tests, the undrained shear strength was measured at designated points using cone penetration test device and sampling was conducted simultaneously in order to measure water content, pH and electric conductivity which would be the key for configuring the cementation effects indirectly. The iron electrode decomposition test results show that the water content adjacent to anode section decreased in 35% and increased in 13% at cathode section. The measured shear strength however, was increased considerably comparing to initial shear strength because of cementation effect between iron ions and soil particles. In case of aluminium electrode decomposition test, the distribution of measured shear strength and degree of improvement were more homogeneous than iron electrode decomposition test.

A Study on Pyrolysis Characterization and Heating Value of Semi-carbonized Wood Chip (반탄화 우드칩의 열분해 특성 및 발열량에 관한 연구)

  • In this work, a semi-carbonized wood chip (SC-WC) was prepared by heat-treatment at low carbonization temperature. The pyrolysis characterization and heating value of the SC-WC at different heat-treatment temperature were evaluated. The pyrolysis characterization and heating value of the SC-WC were determined using thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA) in $N_{2}$ atmosphere and calorimeter, respectively. From the TGA results, the thermal decomposition reaction of the SC-WC treated at by low temperature was similar to pure wood chip and the reaction was most actively occurred in the range of $200^{\circ}C$ to $400^{\circ}C$, whereas the initial thermal decomposition temperature of the SC-WC increased with the increasing heat-treatment temperature. In addition, the heating value of the SC-WC showed a similar trend as to the decamposition temperature behavior. This is probably attributed to increased carbon content of SC-WC by the localized carbonization of the wood chip which consisted of cellulose, hemi-cellulose, and lignin.

  • Organic semi-conductive materials have characteristics such as the advantages of easy formability, low-cost and diversity along with moderate semi-conductive properties. In this paper, we developed a flexible organic-inorganic hybrid solar cell fiber. First, we made a solar cell on the glass and attached the solar cell on the glass fiber similarly. In the latter case, thermal deposition method was employed in order to effectively apply ITO onto fiber surface. The amount of ITO was controlled by varying the temperature from 25, 150 to $300^{\circ}C$. Optimum result was obtained at $150^{\circ}C$ where maximize the deposition amount without significant decomposition of ITO. Despite of maximum open circuit voltage of 0.39V, the resulting current was quite unstable and weak, limiting realistic applications. It was, however, concluded that the flexible solar cell fiber developed showed a possibility of low-weight application from functional clothing for military to space suit mainly due to flexibility and thus wear ability.

  • Let $M_n$ be the $C^*$-algebra of all $n \times n$ matrices over the complex field, and $P[M_m, M_n]$ the convex cone of all positive linear maps from $M_m$ into $M_n$ that is, the maps which send the set of positive semidefinite matrices in $M_m$ into the set of positive semi-definite matrices in $M_n$. The convex structures of $P[M_m, M_n]$ are highly complicated even in low dimensions, and several authors [CL, KK, LW, O, R, S, W]have considered the possibility of decomposition of $P[M_m, M_n] into subcones.

  • Steady-state natural convection heat transfer characteristics from cylinders in a multiply-connected bounded region are clarified. A spectral finite difference scheme (spectral decomposition of the system of partial differential equations, semi-implicit time integration) is applied in numerical analysis, with a boundary-fitted conformal coordinate system through a Jacobian elliptic function with a successive transformation to formulate a system of governing equations in terms of a stream function, vorticity and temperature. Multiplicity of the domain is expressed explicitly.

  • Vast amount of XML documents raise interests in how they will be used and how far their usage can be expanded. This paper has two central goals: 1) easy and fast retrieval of XML documents or relevant elements; and 2) efficient and stable management of large-size XML documents. The keys to develop such a practical system are how to segment a large XML document to smaller fragments and how to store them. In order to achieve these goals, we designed SCOF(Service-centric Object Fragmentation) model, which is a semi-decomposition method based on conversion rules provided by XML database managers. Keyword-based search using SCOF model then retrieves the specific elements or attributes of XML documents, just as typical XML query language does. Even though this approach needs the wisdom of managers in XML document collection, SCOF model makes it efficient both retrieval and management of massive XML documents.

  • Large-scale simulated lysimeter experiments were conducted for 4 years as a fundamental study to develop enhanced landfill stabilization method, which accelerate stabilization time and make efficient practical use of self-purification capacity of pollutants in semi-aerobic solid waste landfill. The amount of TOC(total organic carbon) decomposition increased as the landfill depth increased. In case of T-N(total nitrogen), the self-purification capacity increased linearly with the landfill thickness until it reached a maximum level of 6 m. Beyond this level, the self-purification capacity was not increased. The results from lysimeter experiments indicate that 6m of landfill thickness is optimum for self-purification capacity of pollutants considering the mass balance of TOC and T-N.

Production Behavior of Amino Acid from High Temperature and High Pressure Water Reaction of Fish Entrails (고온고압수 반응을 이용한 생선내장의 아미노산 생성거동)

  • The effect of operating parameters (reaction temperature and time) and reaction modes (batch and semi-batch) on the behavior of amino acid production from hydrothermal decomposition of fish-derived wastes was investigated. The amino acids obtained in batch experiments at temperature of 250$^{\circ}C$ were mainly alanine (Ala) and glycine (Gly) at maximum yield of 65 and 28mg/g-dry fish, respectively. At relatively lower temperature of 200$^{\circ}C$, the yield of high-molecular-weight amino acids such as aspartic acid (Asp) and serine (Ser) is high, but decreases as temperature increases. It is likely that high-molecular-weight amino acids decompose faster than low-molecular ones. Semi-batch mode of reaction suppressed decomposition of amino acids into organic acids (or volatile materials) by continuously removing the products from the reaction zone as soon as they are formed. Thus, large amount of high-molecular-weight amino acids such as Asp and Ser at this reaction mode was observed.

Wide Beam Design of a Fully Digital Active Array Radar Using Convex Optimization with Only Phase Control (위상 조정 Convex 최적화 알고리즘을 이용한 완전 디지털 능동배열레이다의 광역빔 설계)

  • The fully digital active array radar uses a wide beam for effective mission performance within a limited time. This paper presents a convex optimization algorithm that adjusts only the phase of an array element. First, the algorithm applies a semidefinite relaxation technique to relax the constraint and convert it to a convex set. Then, the constraint is set so that the amplitude is fixed to some extent and the phase is variable. Finally, the optimization is performed to minimize the sum of the eigenvalues obtained through eigenvalue decomposition. Compared to the application results of the existing genetic algorithm, the proposed algorithm is more effective in wide beam design for a fully digital active array radar.

Mechanical Property and Thermal Stability of Epoxy Composites Containing Poly(ether sulfone) (폴리에테르설폰이 도입된 에폭시 복합재의 열 안정성 및 기계적 특성)

  • Poly(ether sulfone) (PES) embedded diglycidylether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) epoxy composites were fabricated for improving its mechanical properties and thermal stability. The mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural and impact strength of the composites changed significantly with the introduction of PES. The value of the fracture toughness of this composite also was increased remarkably about 24%. Thermal stability of PES/epoxy composites also improved 12%, which was calculated with integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT). From the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) result, the curing temperature and curing heat decreased according to the increase of PES contents. These were attributed to the good distribution and the formation of the semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) composed of the epoxy network and linear PES.
