  • The iterative decomposition coupling formulation of the precise integration finite element method (FEM) and the time domain boundary element method (TD-BEM) is presented for elstodynamic problems. In the formulation, the FEM node and the BEM node are not required to be coincident on the common interface between FEM and BEM sub-domains, therefore, the FEM and BEM are independently discretized. The force and displacement converting matrices are used to transfer data between FEM and BEM nodes on the common interface between the FEM and BEM sub-domains, to renew the nodal variables in the process of the iterations for the un-coincident FEM node and BEM node. The iterative coupling formulation for elastodynamics in current paper is of high modeling accuracy, due to the semi-analytical solution incorporated in the precise integration finite element method. The decomposition coupling formulation for elastodynamics is verified by examples of a cantilever bar under a Heaviside-type force and a harmonic load.

  • The objective of this paper is to perform measurements of power transmission and reflection coefficients in a coupled plate. The coupled plate has been divided into 2 subsystems. The out-of-plane vibration has been only considered with assumption of relatively small in-plane vibration. The coupling loss factors have been measured with consideration of the power balance condition. The power transmission and reflection coefficients has been estimated from the measured values of the coupling loss factors. The measured power transmission and reflection coefficients have been compared with the corresponding theoretical coefficients in a semi-infinite coupled plate.

  • The design of large area thin film transistor liquid crystal displays (TFT-LCDs) requires consideration of cross-talks between the data lines and pixel electrodes. These limits are imposed by the parasitic capacitive elements present in a pixel. The capacitive coupling of the data line signal onto the pixel causes a pixel voltage error. In this study semi-empirical capacitance model which is adopted from VLSI interconnection capacitance calculations was used to calculate mutual coupling capacitances. With calculated mutual coupling capacitances and given image pattern, the root mean square(RMS) voltage of pixel is calculated to see vertical cross-talk from the first to the last column. The information obtained from this study could be utilized to design the larger area and finer image quality panel.

  • It is the objective of this study that by conducting the serni-solid extrusion using A12024, the effect of various process variables on the quality of extruded product and extrusion force is understood. The results of experiment are compared with those of finite element simulation in order to verify the effectiveness of the developed FE-simulation code. In order to simulate densification in the deformation of serni-solid material, the semi-solid material is assumed to be composed of solid region as porous skeleton following compressible visco-plastic model and liquid region following Darcy's equation for the liquid flow saturated in the interstitial space. Then the flow and deformation of the semi-solid alloy are analyzed by coupling the deformation of the porous skeleton and the flow of the eutectic liquid. It is assumed that initial solid fraction is homogeneous. Yield and plastic potential function presented by Kuhn and constitutive model developed by Gunasekera are used for solid skeleton.

  • The aim of this study is to develop a semi-analytical method to investigate fluid-structure coupling of concentric double shells with different lengths and elastic behaviours. Co-axial shells constitute a cylindrical circular container and a baffle submerged inside the stored fluid. The container shell is made of functionally graded materials with mechanical properties changing through its thickness continuously. The baffle made of steel is fixed along its top edge and submerged inside fluid such that its lower edge freely moves. The developed approach is verified using a commercial finite element computer code. Although the model is presented for a specific case in the present work, it can be generalized to investigate coupling of shell-plate structures via fluid. It is shown that the coupling between concentric shells occurs only when they vibrate in a same circumferential mode number, n. It is also revealed that the normalized vibration amplitude of the inner shell is about the same as that of the outer shell, for narrower radial gaps. Moreover, the natural frequencies of the fluid-coupled system gradually decrease and converge to the certain values as the gradient index increases.

  • The nuclear safety assessment involving large transient simulations is forcing the community to develop methods for coupling thermal-hydraulics and neutronic codes and three-dimensional (3D) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes. In this paper a set of dynamic boundary conditions are implemented in OpenFOAM in order to apply zero-dimensional (0D) approaches coupling with 3D thermal-hydraulic simulation in a single framework. This boundary conditions are applied to model pipelines, tanks, pumps, and heat exchangers. On a first stage, four tests are perform in order to assess the implementations. The results are compared with experimental data, full 3D CFD, and system code simulations, finding a general good agreement. The semi-implicit implementation nature of these boundary conditions has shown robustness and accuracy for large time steps. Finally, an application case, consisting of a simplified open pool with a cooling external circuit is solved to remark the capability of the tool to simulate thermal hydraulic systems commonly found in nuclear installations.

  • The behaviour of alloys in the semi-solid state strongly depends on the imposed stress state and on the morphology of the phase which can vary from dendritic to globular. To optimal net shape forging of semi-solid materials, it is important to investigate for filling phenomena in forging process of arbitrarily shaped dies. To produce a automotive part which has good mechanical property, the filling pattern according to die velocity and solid fraction distribution has to be estimated for arbitrarily shaped dies. Therefore, the estimation of filling characteristic in the forging simulation with arbitrarily shaped dies of semi-solid materials are calculated by finite element method with proposed algorithm. The proposed theoretical model and a various boundary conditions for arbitrarily shaped dies is investigated with the coupling calculation between the liquid phase flow and the solid phase deformation. The simulation process with arbitrarily shaped dies is performed to the isothermal conditions of two dimensional problems. To analysis of forging process by using semi-solid materials, a new stress-strain relationship is described, and forging analysis is performed by viscoelastic model for the solid phase and the Darcy's law for the liquid flow. The calculated results for forging force and filling limitations will be compared to experimental data. The filling simulation of simple products performed with the uniform billet temperature(584$^{\circ}C$) from the induction heating by the commercial package MAGMAsoft. The initial step of computation is the touching of semi-solid material with the end of die gate and the initial concept of proposed system just fit with the capability of MAGMAsoft.

  • With the increased size and flexibility of the tower and blades, structural vibrations are becoming a limiting factor towards the design of even larger and more powerful wind turbines. Research into the use of vibration mitigation devices in the turbine tower has been carried out but the use of dampers in the blades has yet to be investigated in detail. Mitigating vibrations will increase the design life and hence economic viability of the turbine blades and allow for continual operation with decreased downtime. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of Semi-Active Tuned Mass Dampers (STMDs) in reducing the edgewise vibrations in the turbine blades. A frequency tracking algorithm based on the Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) technique is used to tune the damper. A theoretical model has been developed to capture the dynamic behaviour of the blades including the coupling with the tower to accurately model the dynamics of the entire turbine structure. The resulting model consists of time dependent equations of motion and negative damping terms due to the coupling present in the system. The performances of the STMDs based vibration controller have been tested under different loading and operating conditions. Numerical analysis has shown that variation in certain parameters of the system, along with the time varying nature of the system matrices has led to the need for STMDs to allow for real-time tuning to the resonant frequencies of the system.

  • A prediction method, based on the Morison equation as well as Froude-Krylov formula, is presented to simulate the loads acting on the columns and caissons of the semi-submersible platform induced by Internal Solitary Wave (ISW) respectively. Combined with the experimental results, empirical formulas of the drag and inertia coefficients in Morison equation can be determined as a function of the Keulegan-Carpenter (KC) number, Reynolds number (Re) and upper layer depth h1/h respectively. The experimental and calculated results are compared. And a good agreement is observed, which proves that the present prediction method can be used for analyzing the ISW-forces on the semi-submersible platform. Moreover, the results also demonstrate the layer thickness ratio has a significant effect upon the maximum horizontal forces on the columns and caissons, but both minimum horizontal and vertical forces are scarcely affected. In addition, the incoming wave directions may also contribute greatly to the values of horizontal forces exerted on the caissons, which can be ignored in the vertical force analysis.

  • Behavior of underground structural systems is usually complicated because of various unknown parameters. In order to construct those structural systems safely and economically, exact identification of the system parameters and accurate analysis of the system behaviors are essentially required. In this study, a forward analysis program, which is able to eliminate numerical errors due to far field boundary effect, is developed by coupling finite and boundary elements. In this coupled analysis, boundary elements are used in the semi-infinite domain where stress variation is small, and finite elements in the stress concentration region where material nonlinearity should be considered. Then, a back analysis program which can identify the system parameters is developed using the direct method to be combined with the forward analysis program. The elastic modulus and initial stress, which are most important in the description of the behavior of underground structures, are taken as the system parameters. A simple example is examined 0 show that the method can be used effectively.
