Biological Fixation of $CO_2$ by Chlorella sp. HA-1 in a Semi-Continuous and Series Reactor System

  • Characteristics of biological $CO_2$ fixation by Chlorella sp. HA-1 were investigated in a semi-continuous and series reactor system using an internally illuminated photobioreactor to overcome shortcomings of physicochemical technologies such as adsorption and membrane separation. High $CO_2$ fixation rate was achieved in the semi-continuous reactor system, in which the dilution ratios of the culture medium were controlled. The average $CO_2$ fixation rate was maintained almost constantly when the dilution ratio increased by 0.1 increment from the initial value of 0.5. The total removal efficiency of $CO_2$ was enhanced by employing a series reactor system. The average $CO_2$ fixation rate increased until 4.013 g $CO_2\;day^{-1}$ in a series operation of four reactors, compared to 0.986 g $CO_2\;day^{-1}$ in a batch operation mode. The total $CO_2$ fixation rate was proportional to the number of reactors used in the series reactor system. In the series reactor system of semi-continuous operation, a large amount of $CO_2$ was removed continuously for 30 days. These results showed that the present reactor systems are efficient and economically feasible for a biological $CO_2$ fixation.

  • In the present paper, batch and semi-continuous settling characteristics of a binary calcium carbonate-water system were investigated. Using experimental data of batch settling characteristics, a graphical analysis for a semi-continuous thickening column was developed and compared with experimental results on the basis of Kynch theory, only where the feed velocity line was within the limits of Kynch theorem III. The analysis showed good agreement with experiments. Quite erroneous results, however, was observed for the analysis of a sludge region on the underloaded operation, which was considered due to the deviation from the limits of theory.

A high $CO_2$ fixation rate for a long time was obtained, when the method of semi-continuous mode was employed, in which the controlling parameter was the dilution ratio. A constant $CO_2$ fixation rate was maintained even when the dilution ratio was increased with the increment of 0.1 at the initial value of 0.5. The method of series operation was used to improve the efficiency of $CO_2$ fixation. The total amount of $CO_2$ fixation was proportion to the number of reactor in series operation.

  • The microalgal, Chlorella sp. HA-1, had good $CO_2$ fixation efficiency compared to other algal strains at the same operating condition. In this study, Chorella sp. HA-1 showed similar tolerance both 10% and 20% $CO_2$ concentration. By optimization of the major operation variables such as pH, initial cell concentration, light intensity, the $CO_2$ fixation rate could be raised to a reasonably high value, 372 $gCO_2/m^2{\cdot}day$ in a 3 L internally illuminated photobioreactor. In order to maintain the $CO_2$ fixation rate for a long time, the method of semi-continuous operation was employed, in which dilution ratio was the controlling parameter. Starting with the dilution ratio of 0.5 with the increased increment of 0.1, the constant $CO_2$ fixation rate was obtained.

Influence of Semi-Active Suspension on Running Safety of Vehicles

  • Railway vehicles equipped with semi-active suspension system can improve the ride quality of car bodies. Semi-active suspension system is usually applied onto high speed train, and therefore higher running safety requirement is proposed. The influence of semi-active suspension system on safety of vehicles running on straight line and curve line is studied, and the influences of sky hook damping coefficient and system time-delay on operation safety of cars fitted with semiactive suspension system is analyzed. The results show that the vehicles equipped with semi-active suspension system, not only the vibration of car body is decreased, it can also give little influence on running safety of cars, as a result, it will not endanger the running safety of cars.

  • A semi-actively controlled impact system which adjusts an impulse exerted by the external impact is studies. The main control variables are internal pressure difference inside the cylinder and the shock absorber displacement while it travels. Compared to a conventional one so called a passive system with a variable orifice inside the cylinder, a semi-actively controlled system utilizes an external orifice controlled by a highly fast responding electrical proportional valve. This device overcomes the temperature and viscosity change due to continuous operating and keeps the desired pressure difference and displacement in every operation. In this article a new prototype impact system is designed and manufactured based on a semi-actively control system. Through computer simulations and experiments, we verify the possibility of controlling the shock absorber pressure and displacement. After investigating the control performance a modified semi-actively controlled system with better control performance is also proposed.

  • In this study transmembrane pressure (TMP) was measured with respect to permeate flux through the submerged flat sheet membrane for the emulsion and semi-synthetic cutting oil solutions. The effective area and nominal pore size of the used microfiltration membrane were $0.02m^2$ and $0.15{\mu}m$, respectively. The experiments were carried out simultaneously for run/stop (R/S) and sinusoidal flux continuous operation (SFCO) modes using two submerged membrane module in the reservoir. TMP for the case of SFCO was maintained under 60% of R/S, and the effect on TMP drop decreased as the permeate flux increased for emulsion cutting oil solution. Membrane fouling for the semisynthetic solution showing low turbidity was induced lower comparing to the emulsion solution. Also, the effect on TMP drop for SFCO decreased during long-term operation.

  • A semi-pilot biofilter packed with media with immobilized Thiobacillus sp. IW and return sludge, was operated under various operating conditions in order to treat malodorous waste air containing both hydrogen sulfide and ammonia which are major air pollutants emitted from composting factories and many publicly owned treatment works (POTW). At the incipient and middle stages of a semi-pilot biofilter operation, the hydrogen sulfide-removal efficiency behaves regardless of an inlet-load of ammonia. However, the ammonia-removal efficiency decreased as an inlet-load of hydrogen sulfide increased. Nevertheless, at the final stage of the semi-pilot biofilter operation, the ammonia-removal efficiency was not affected by the increase of hydrogen sulfide-inlet load. It is attributed to that a serious acidification of semi-pilot biofilter-media did not occur due to continuous injection of buffer solution at the final stage of the semi-pilot biofilter operation. When both hydrogen sulfide and ammonia contained in malodorous waste air were treated simultaneously by semi-pilot biofilter, the maximum elimination capacities of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia turned out to be ca. 58 and $30g/m^3/h$, respectively. These maximum elimination capacities were estimated to be ca. 39 and 46% less than those for lab-scaled biofilter-separate elimination of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, respectively. Thus, for the simultaneous biofilter-treatment of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, the maximum elimination capacity of ammonia decreased by 7% more than that of hydrogen sulfide.

  • Continuous excavation technologies are developed to improve the excavation rate of shield TBM. Continuous excavation is a technology that provides thrust to segments, excluding being installed one, to reduce tunneling downtime. This paper investigated the prior technology related to continuous excavation segments. The main technology was classified into helical segment, honeycomb segment, and conventional segment methods. The helical segment method has not been applied in actual construction yet, and the honeycomb segment method has not succeeded in commercialization. The continuous excavation method using conventional segments has been successfully demonstrated. The thrust force and operation method of the thrust jacks for the semi-continuous technology were analyzed. Continuous excavation TBM research is also progressing in Korea, and through the analysis of successful cases, the need to develop independent continuous excavation methods has been identified.

  • The aim of this paper is to study the concept of s-topological d-algebras which is a d-algebra supplied with a certain type of topology that makes the binary operation defined on it d-topologically continuous. This concept is a generalization of the concept of topological d-algebra. We obtain several properties of s-topological d-algebras.
