  • A new theoretical approach for analysis of stress around a tensioned anchor in rock is presented in this paper. The solution has been derived for semi-infinite elastic rock and anchor and for plane strain conditions. The method considers both the anchor head bearing plate and its grouted bond length embedded in depth. The solution of the tensioned rock anchor problem is obtained by superimposing the solutions of two simpler but fundamental problems: A distributed load applied at a finite portion (bearing plate area) of the rock surface and a distributed shear stress applied at the anchor-rock interface along the bond length. The solution of the first problem already exists and the solution of the shear stress distributed along the bond length is found in this study. To acquire a deep understanding of the stress distribution around a tensioned anchor in rock, an illustrative example is solved and stress contours are drawn for stress components. In order to verify the results obtained by the proposed solution, comparisons are made with finite difference method (FDM) results. Very good agreements are observed for the teoretical results in comparison with FDM.

  • In this paper, in order to study the geometric factor effect of a circular hole near a crack tip in a semi-infinite plate, the Dimensionless Stress Intensity Factor, $F(=\frac K {\sigma {\sqrt{\pi a}}})$ is analyzed at the crack tip using a two Dimensional Boundary Element Method (BEM) program which is known as superior in Fracture Mechanics. Kelvin's solution was used as a fundamental solution in BEM analysis and displacement extrapolation method was used to determine Stress Intensity Factor.

  • The transmission of vibration energy through beam-plate junctions in vibration intensity analysis called power new analysis (PFA) has been studied. PFA is an analytic tool for the prediction of frequency averaged vibration response of built-up structures at medium to high frequency ranges. The power transmission and reflection coefficients between the semi-infinite beam and plate are estimated using the wave transmission approach. For the application of the power coefficients to practical complex structures, the numerical methods, such as finite element method are needed to be adapted to the power flow governing equation. To solve the discontinuity of energy density at the joint, joint matrix is developed using energy flow coupling relationships at the beam-plate joint. Using the joint matrix developed in this paper, an idealized ship stem part is modeled with finite element program, and vibration energy density and intensity are calculated.

  • The interaction of forced convection-conduction with thermal radiation in laminar boundary layer over a plate fin is studied numerically. The analysis is based on complete solution whereby the heat conduction equation for the fin is solved simultaneously with the conservation equations for mass, momentum and energy in the fluid boundary layer adjacent to the fin. The fluid is a gray medium and diffusion(Rosseland) approximation is used to describe the radiative heat flux in the energy equation. The resulting boundary value problem are convection-conduction parameter N$_{c}$ and radiation-conduction parameter m, Prandtl number Pr. Numerical results are presented for gases with the Prandtl numbers of 0.7 & 5 with values of N$_{c}$ and M ranging from 0 to 10 respectively. The object of this study is to provide the first results on forced convection-radiation interaction in boundary layer flow over a semi-infinite flay plate which can be used for comparisons with future studies that will consider a more accurate expression for the radiative heat flux. The agreement of the results from the complete solution presented by E. M. Sparrow and those from this paper for the special case of M=0 is good. The overall rate of heat transfer from the fin considering radiative effect is higher than that from the fin neglecting radiative effect. The local heat transfer coefficient with radiative effect is higher than that without radiative effect. In the direction from tip to base, those coefficients decrease at first, attain minimum, and then increase. The larger values of N$_{c}$ M, Pr give rise to larger fin temperature variations and the fin temperature without radiative effect is always higher than that with radiative effect.

  • In this study, evaporation of LN2 non-spreading pool on concrete plate was dealt with experimentally. The thermophysical properties of concrete, which is a composite material, were obtained by minimizing the difference between the numerical analysis results obtained from the assumed properties and the results from experiments. The thermal energy required for evaporation of the liquid pool is supplied from the concrete plate and the wall of the container. As a result of the measurement, the thermal energy flowing in from the wall was negligible compared to the one supplied from the concrete plate. It was found that the measured evaporation rate of the liquid pool by the heat energy supplied through the concrete plate agrees well with the PTC model except for the initial section of the experiment. The validity of the semi-infinite assumption and the one-dimensional assumption, which are the main conditions of the PTC model, was also verified through experiments. The evaporation rate model in the non-spreading pool discussed in this study can provide a basic frame for the one in the spreading pool, which is a meaningful result considering that the spreading pool is very realistic compared to the non-spreading pool.

  • A hybrid modelling technique of a soil-structure system on viscoelastic soil medium is studied in this paper. The hybrid model consists of a near-field and a far-field with their common interface passing through the soil region at some distance from the base of the structure. It makes use of frequency-dependent impedances so as to represent the semi-infinite far-field. The far-field impedances are formulate including the radiation damping characteristics as well as the viscoelastic properties of the soil medium. The verification of the method has been carried out using a rigid circular plate on a viscoelastic half-space. The impedances obtained by the method are compared with the theoretical values. Example analyses have been performed for a tall chimney and the results have been compared with those obtained by other methods which are frequently used.

  • Studies are made of the turbulent separation bubble in a two-dimensional semi-infinite blunt plate aligned to a uniform free stream when the oncoming free stream contains a pulsating component. The discrete-vortex method is applied to simulate this flow situations because this approach is effective to represent the unsteady motions of turbulent shear layer and the effect of viscosity near the solid surface. The two key external paramenters in the free stream, i.e., the amplitude of pulsation, A, and the frequency parameter St[=fH/ $U_{1}$], are dealt with in the present numerical computations, A particular frequency gives a minimum reattachment which is related to the drag reduction and the most effective frequency is dependent on the most amplified shedding frequency. The turbulent flow structure is scrutinized. A comparison between the unperturbed flow and the perturbed at the particular frequency of the minimum reattachment length of the separation bubble suggests that the large-scale structure is associated with the shedding frequency and the flow instabilities.

  • A numerical simulation has been performed for the penetration of a long-rod penetrator into a metal block (ceramic-tile-inserted 4340-steel plate). The impact velocity is 1.5km/s at a normal incidence angle. The first two validations are conducted for a semi-infinite block measuring the depth of penetration (DOP). The material model of ceramic is the JH-2 (Johnson-Holmquist) model. The predicted DOP values are in close agreement with the experimental data. Then, the primary simulation is performed by varying the position of the confined ceramic tile for three types of thickness of ceramic tile. The residual velocity, residual mass and residual kinetic energy of the long-rod are obtained from the simulation. Based on these predicted values, the trend of the ballistic performance of the protective structure is estimated. In addition, the mass efficiency is calculated in order to determine the performance of the ceramic-tile-inserted metal block. Finally, the optimum protective structure is identified.

  • Analysis has been performed for the penetration of a long-rod into MMC/Ceramic layered armour system with several shot test and a series of simulations. Two types of MMC plate have been fabricated by a liquid pressing method; A356/45%vol.%SiCp with a uniform distribution of SiC particle and Al7075/45%vol.B4Cp with B4C particle. The mechanical properties were measured with the high-speed split Hopkins bar test, hardness test and compression test. The popular Simplified Johnson-Cook model was adopted to represent the material characteristics for FEM simulations. The performance of the MMC applied armour system has been made by comparing with the semi-infinite mild steel target using the depth of penetration(DOP). The results show that placing ceramic front layer provides a certain gain in protection, and that placing another ductile front layer provides a further gain. The application of MMC is found to be attractive.
