Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand the effects of a program to improve self-esteem and smoking cessation self-efficiency on smoking high school students' self-esteem, smoking cessation self-efficiency, amount of smoking, cotinine in urine, and carbon monoxide while exhalation. Methods: This research was conducted as a quasi-experimental pretest and posttest control and experimental group methodological comparison study. The subjects were 45 smoking high school students (Exp.=22, Cont.=23) in U City. Data were collected from October 19 to December 7, 2010, and analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 12.0 program by frequency, Mann-Whitney test, means, standard deviations, and Willcoxon signed rank test. Results: After the treatment, those belonging to the experimental group showed significantly increased self-esteem and smoking cessation self-efficacy and also showed decreased amount of smoking, cotinine in urine, and carbon monoxide while exhalation compared to the control group. Conclusion: The self-esteem and smoking cessation self-efficacy improvement program was effective in improving self-esteem and smoking cessation self-efficacy and in diminishing the amount of smoking, cotinine in urine and carbon monoxide while exhalation. Therefore, this program is recommended as a smoking cessation strategy for smoking adolescents.
The purpose of this study is to develop self-efficacy promotion program and to test its effects on self-efficacy, self-care, physiologic index of hemodialysis patients after applying this program to them. Preliminary study was carried out to identify the levels and types of self-care, self-efficacy of hemodialysis patients. To develop self-efficacy promoting program, several discussions with nursing professors and nurse specialists on hemodialysis patients were made after in-depth literature review on the area. Through these processes, the self-efficacy promoting program including 20 minutes long videotape and other counciling documents were completed. This videotape consisted of specific self-care techniques for hemodialysis patients including management of fistula, measurement of blood presure and body weight, special diets, medications, exercise and rest, management of physical problems and social adjustment. Two group equivalent pre and post test quasai-experimental research design was used in this study. The total subjects were 34 hemodialysis patients who received hemodialysis three time per week at 1 university hospital. Seventeen experimental group subjects were matched with control group subjects in sex and age. Data were analysed with the SPSS window program. Homogeniety between experimental and control group pretest data was tested by x$^2$ and t-test. There were no significanct differences in general characteristics, illness history, specific self-efficacy and self-care between the two groups. The differences of general self-efficacy of two groups were tested with the Repeated Measure ANCOVA because of significant differences of pretest data of general self efficacy between two groups. The differences of self-efficacy and self-care of two groups were tested with Repeated Measure ANOVA and the differences of physiologic indecies including blood potassium level and blood phosphorus level and interdialytic weight gain were tested by t-test. The results were as follows: 1. There was no significant difference in general self-efficacy between the two groups over four different time, and no interaction by groups and by time. 2. There was significant difference in specific self-efficacy between the two groups over four different time, and interaction by groups and by time. 3. There was significant difference in self-care between the two groups over four different time, and interaction by groups and by time. 4. There were no significant differences of blood potassium level and blood phosphorus level, but there was significant difference of interdialytic weight gain between the two groups. From the results above, it can be concluded that the self-efficacy promotion program for hemodialysis patients was effective to improve degree of specific self-efficacy and self-care and to decrease interdialytic weight gain. Considering results, the followings are recommended: 1) Repeated studies are needed for another hemodialysis patients. 2) This program can be used for improving degree of self-efficacy and self-care of hemodialysis patients by nurse practitioner and nurse educator.

The purposes of this study are 1) to modify a self-help program for patients having fibromyalgia, 2) to revise instruments to measure the self-efficacy and impact of fibromyalgia; and 3) to test the effects of the program in terms of self-efficacy, physical activities, and clinical symptoms. The subjects of this study were persons diagnosed as fibromyalgia at a university hospital. For the first two purposes, six patients were selected. Twenty three subjects for the third purpose were selected and assigned to experimental and control group on the base of their residence. Thirteen were assigned to the experimental group, while 10 to the control group. Instruments selected for revision were self-efficacy scale and fibromyalgia impact profile. On the basis of the text developed by Arthritis Foundation, a program for patients with fibromyalgia was tentatively developed. Instruments for measurement of self-efficacy and impact of fibromyalgia were revised to show high reliabilities. Results obtained by utilization of the program were as follows : 1) There were no increase of self-efficacy and physical activities. 2) There were no improvement of the number of tender points and pain. 3) There were improvement of depression, fatigue and sleep impairment. These findings indicate the needs for modification of the program with emphasis of exercise for relaxation of tender points, increases of enactive action and vicarious learning.
Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of a self growth program through MBTI on interpersonal relationships, and the career identity of nursing college students. Methods: A randomized controlled pre-post test experimental design was used for this study. The 24 nursing students were randomly assigned into two groups: 12 for the experimental group, and 12 for the control group. The subjects were junior nursing students, who were randomly selected from an undergraduate nursing program at K university located in Daegu, Korea. The data was collected from March 18 to April 1, 2002. The MBTI self growth program used in this study was based on the one developed by Shim and Kim (1997). The 12 experimental group students received the group self growth program through MBTI for 15 hours, while the 12 control group students received no treatment, except a series of tests. The Korean version MBTI test used in this study was developed and verified for reliability and validity by Kim and Sim (1990). Change in inter-personal relationships was measured using the Relationship Change Scale developed by Schlein and Guerney (1971), and modified by Lee and Mun (1982). Career identity was measured using the My Vocational Situation developed by Holland. Daiger and Power (1980), and revised by Kim (1997). The data were analyzed with the SPSS Win 10.0 program, through which the 2 test, t-test, and Repeated measures ANOVA were examined. Results: 1) The first hypothesis, 'the experimental group that received the self growth program through MBTI will obtain a higher interpersonal relationship score than the control group', was supported (F=5.295. p=.031. Interaction: p=.000). 2) The second hypothesis, 'the experimental group that received the self growth program through MBTI will obtain a higher career identity score than the control group', was supported (F=28.575, p=.000, Interaction: p=.000). Conclusion: The results showed that the ready planned self growth program through MBTI had positive effects on improving the interpersonal relationships, and the career identity of nursing college students.
Purpose: This study examined the effect of a self-help management program which strengthens self-efficacy on the self-efficacy and the activities of daily living(ADL) in stroke patients. Methods: A quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group, pre and post design was used. The subjects consisted of 47 stroke patients. Twenty-six patients were assigned to the experimental group and 21 patients were assigned to the control group. The data was collected before and 5 weeks after the program. All subjects were questioned about the self-efficacy and ADL before and after the program. Results: The scores of the self-efficacy and ADL in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group. Conclusion: The self-help management program by strengthen self-efficacy is effective in increasing the self-efficacy and ADL. Therefore this program may be a useful intervention to increase the ADL in stroke patients.
This thesis aims to examine the influences of self-regulatory group counseling on self-regulation and school life satisfaction of the higher grade students in Elementary school. To achieve this aim, the following research questions were posed: First, What kind of influence does the self-regulatory group counseling have on the self- regulation of the higher grade students in Elementary school. Second, What kind of influence does the self-regulatory group counseling have on school life satisfaction scale of the higher grade students in Elementary school. In order to verify these research questions, the self-regulation test and school life satisfaction scale were conducted to both the experimental group and control group in pre-test, next, self-regulatory group counseling was practiced to the experimental group. And finally, a post-test was given to both the experimental group and control group. For this study, 200 students from 6th-grader of S Elementary school located in Incheon were given the self-regulation test and chosen 50 students who received low marks. Then, 50 students were researched into the school life satisfaction scale and chosen 16 students who got average-below score again. It was two matching groups through consideration of their score of the school life satisfaction scale, 8 students were arranged to the experimental group and the rest to the control group. The Self-Regulatory Group Counseling program developed by Eun Hyuck-gi(1999). The program was based on the following three programs: "The development. of the Cognitive-Behavioral Counseling therapy and their reports" by Kim HyeSuk(1996), Group counseling" by Brigman and Early(1991) and the study on the improving program in human relation" by Park KyeongAe(1998). The Self-Regulatory Group Counseling program activity was conducted during 6 weeks. Each session was 60 minutes and it continued for 8 sessions. The data collected to find out a difference in self-regulation and the degree of school life satisfaction between the experimental and control groups were processed by means of SPSSWIN program, and the post-test between both the groups were comparatively analyzed through t-test, a mean difference test. The following conclusions were drawn from the results of this study. First, the self-regulatory group counseling program has obvious effect of improving the self-regulation of the higher grade students in Elementary school. Second, the self-regulatory group counseling program has obvious effect of improving the school life satisfaction of the higher grade students in Elementary school. Particularly, this study shows statistical significance in cognitive facts of the self-regulation and the degrees of satisfaction with general school life, teacher, friend and facilities. Since the self-regulatory group counseling program has positive effects on self-regulation and satisfaction with their school life, It is required to utilize the structured self-regulatory group counseling program in school more widely to help students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to verify effects of the Empowering A Self-Efficacy (EASE) program on self-efficacy, self-management, and child attitude toward illness in children with epilepsy. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group pre-post test design. Participants were 10 to 15 year old children with epilepsy (11 in the experimental group and 10 in the control group) who were registered at one hospital in S city. The experimental group received the EASE program for 3 weeks. In the first week, a group meeting lasting 570 minutes was conducted on a single day. Over the next two weeks, telephone counselling was conducted twice a week. Data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0. Results: There was a significant difference of pre-post evaluation of the epilepsy self-management scores in the experimental group. However, differences between the experimental group and the control group for seizure self-efficacy and child attitude toward illness were not significant. Conclusion: This is the first study in Korea to develop and evaluate an intervention program for children with epilepsy. Further studies are needed to confirm the effects of the EASE program.
