  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to construct a structural equational model to explain and predict burnout in family caregivers of patients with cancer. The study was based on the Stress-Appraisal-Coping Model of Lazarus and Folkman (1984) and Family Stress Theory (Hill, 1958). Methods: Data were collected from July 10 to September 30, 2012 through direct interviews and a self -report questionnaire survey. Participants in this study were 206 family caregivers providing care for patients with cancer in In-patient or Out-patient departments of three different general hospitals located in Busan. Measured variables were exogenous variables (social support and perceived health status) and endogenous variables (perceived stress, hope and burnout). Results: Goodness of fit in the hypothetical model was ${\chi}^2=174.07$, TLI=.95, CFI=.97, RMSEA=.08. Perceived health status, perceived stress, and hope showed statistically significant direct effects on burnout of family caregivers. Social support affected burnout of family caregivers indirectly. These variables explained 68.5% of total variance in burnout. Conclusion: The results from this study suggest that perceived stress, perceived health status, and hope should be considered as major influential factors when developing nursing interventions to control burnout of family caregivers (of patients with cancer).

  • The purpose of this study was designed to test and develope the structural model that explains health promoting behaviors among college students in Korea. The hypothetical model was constructed on the Pender's Health promotion Model(l996) and the inclusion of some influential factors for life satisfaction. The conceptual framework was built around eight constructs. Exogenous variables included in the model were self-esteem, perceived health status, self-efficacy, internal locus of control, chance locus of control. powerful other locus of control. Endogenous variables were health promotion behaviors and life satisfaction. The results are as follows; 1. The overall fit of the hypothetical model to the data was moderate <$x^2$=4.18(df=11. p=0.041), GFI= 0.99, AGFI= 0.76, RMR= 0.019, CFI= 0.99, CN= 248.50> 2. Path and variable of the model were modified by considering both its theoretical implication and statistical significance of parameter estimates. Compared to the hypothetical model. the revised model has become parsimonious and had a better fit to the data expected in a chi-square value <$x^2$=8.43( df= 16, p=0.21), GFI= 0.99, AGFI= 0.92., RMR= 0.024, CFI= 0.99, CN= 312.01> 3. Some of the predictive factors. especially self efficacy. self esteem. powerful others locus of control. perceived health status revealed the direct effects on health promoting behaviors. Of these variables. self-efficacy was the most signigicant factor. These predictive variables of health promoting behaviors explained 59% of total variances in the model. 4. Health promoting behaviors, self-esteem. and perceived health status revealed direct effect on the life satisfaction. Self-efficacy was identified as an important variable that contributed indirectly to improve life satisfaction by enhancing health promoting behaviors. These predictive variables of life satisfaction explained 42% of total variances in the model. In conclusion. the derived model in this study is considered appropriate in explaining and predicting health promoting models and life satisfaction among college students in Korea and could effectively be used as a reference model for further studies by suggesting a direction in health promoting nursing practices.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the health promotion behavior(HPB) of the labor workers at the cement manufacturing company based on the Health Promotion Model by Pender(1996). Data were collected by self-reported questionnaire from 180 blue workers at the 2 cement factories under the permission of data collection and cooperation with managers in the factories. For data analysis, Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, Multiple regression with SPSS/PC + 10.0 version were used. The results were as follows: 1. The average scores for the HPB, consisted of 6 subdimensions was 2.74. The highest mean score was 2.88 in 'Exercise' and the lowest on was 2.58 'Responsibility of health'. 2. The score of the HPB was statistically different according to educational level(p<.00l), perceived health status(p<.00l) and satisfaction of working environment(p<.05). 3. HPB was positively related to age(p<.05), perceived health status(p<.00l), job satisfaction(p<.05), and satisfaction of working environment(p<.05), while it showed negative correlation with educational level(p<.01). 4. According to the results of multiple regression analysis, factors affecting HPB were perceived health status and education level explained 20.3% of variance. From this research findings, we need to different approach in develop health promotion program of Cement manufacturing company workers and focusing on improvement to job satisfaction and satisfaction of working environment.
