  • This study investigated the level of academic passion for pre-service elementary teachers' science pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and the factors that influence the passion. To this end, 182 first to fourth grade students in advanced non-science majors who were taking science-related courses in the second semester were selected, and two tests were then administered to evaluate their academic passions for science subject matter knowledge and science pedagogical knowledge. Individual in-depth interviews were also conducted with some of the participants. It was found that the factors such as "importance" and "harmonious passion" for learning science subject matter knowledge and science pedagogical knowledge were found at a high level. On the other hand, the factors such as "like" and "investment of time and energy" were slightly higher than normal, and the factor such as "obsessive passion" was slightly lower than normal. The differences in academic passion for science subject matter knowledge and science pedagogical knowledge were greater according to the high school track than the grade. The pre-service elementary teachers selected more often the factors such as "individual interests", "high school track", "contents of science-related courses at the university of education", "characteristics of professor in charge of science-related courses at the university of education", and "experience in teaching practicum" as the factors that influenced their academic passion for science subject matter knowledge and science pedagogical knowledge. However, there was a slight difference in the selection ratio depending on the high school track.

  • This study has a goal to read a trend of language research by analysing evaluation tools and methods that researchers have used for assessing young children's language abilities. Thus the study has chosen 237 language ability evaluation methods out of 121 young child's language ability evaluation researches. The treatises were selected from 4 types of early childhood education journals registered on the Korea Research Foundation. The data analysis was employed for processing the frequency and percentage of the collected data. The results were as follows: First, of single age groups the subject group most selected was five-year-olders and of mixed-age groups the subject group most selected was from three to five, and the number of subjects in researches were mostly below fifty children. The researches were sorted into an 'experimental/ investigational researching' type that has been frequently re-utilized by others, an 'interview type' using a data collection method, and a 'difference verification' type using a data analysis method which has been used in majority of studies. Second, the number of treaties that required data analysis has increased since 1996. Concludingly, the analysis of young child's language ability evaluation tools shows that the purposes of many researches were concentrated on studying children's knowledge about language, children's language functions such as speaking, reading, writing and listening, while evaluation contents were focused on speaking and writing.

  • BCI (Brain-Computer Interface) is a system that transforms a subject's brain signal related to their intention into a control signal by classifying EEG (electroencephalograph) signals obtained during the imagination of movement of a subject's limbs. The BCI system allows us to control machines such as robot arms or wheelchairs only by imaging limbs. With the exact same experiment environment, activated brain regions of each subjects are totally different. In that case, a simple approach is to use as many channels as possible when measuring brain signals. However the problem is that using many channels also causes other problems. When applying a CSP (Common Spatial Pattern), which is an EEG extraction method, many channels cause an overfitting problem, and in addition there is difficulty using this technique for medical analysis. To overcome these problems, we suggest an optimal channel selection method using a BPSO (Binary Particle Swarm Optimization), BPSO with channel impact factor, and GA. This paper examined optimal selected channels among all channels using three optimization methods and compared the classification accuracy and the number of selected channels between BPSO, BPSO with channel impact factor, and GA by SVM (Support Vector Machine). The result showed that BPSO with channel impact factor selected 2 fewer channels and even improved accuracy by 10.17~11.34% compared with BPSO and GA.

The study conducted a feasibility assessment through on-site surveys such as the suitability of the candidate sites, location analysis, and possibility of damage to the forest, before developing recreation forest sites in Gwangju-si and, based on the result, selected appropriate subject sites. The candidates for this study were 5 forest sites such as one site in the Mokheon-dong area, two in the Docheok-myeon area, and one in the Toechon-myeon area. For this study, the current status of the natural recreation forest was surveyed, its feasibility index and assessment process were investigated, and the local status and related regulations of Gyeonggi-do and Gwangju-si were reviewed. The final subject sites were selected after feasibility assessment utilizing assessment index in order to evaluate the candidate sites. The feasibility assessment was conducted after three separate on-site surveys for each candidate site between October 2018 and January 2019 utilizing "The Feasibility Assessment Criteria for Natural Recreation Forest (Notification 2018-71)" of the Korean Forest Service. The items instrumental to the feasibility assessment were classified into landscape, location, water system, induction of recreation, and development condition; the assessment was made after redefining each item into detailed items. Through this process, the Usan-ri area was selected as the final site for developing natural recreation forest, having obtained more than 100 points according to "The Feasibility Assessment Criteria for Natural Recreation Forest" of the Korean Forest Service. In order to develop natural recreation forest in the Usan-ri area in the future, further discussion is necessary with the relevant departments in consideration of the degree of ecological zoning map.

  • In this research, we investigated the historical development and ways of improvement of the teacher employment test (TET, hereafter) in Korea. This paper consists of three parts. The first part details the secondary science teacher education system in Korea. The second part elaborates upon the development of the TET since 1990's. The third part provides conclusion by addressing ways to improve science teacher education and employment systems in Korea. After all, the keen competition for teacher education and the demanding entry test ensure that secondary science teachers are selected from a pool of candidates with high academic achievement. Korean teacher employment system in general places more weight on subject knowledge. Although we cannot simply conclude that Korean science teachers must have profound knowledge in the subject matter and are competent in pedagogy, it stands to reason that the teachers could be more competent in performing their roles than those of many western countries with an acute shortage of teachers. We also suggested future directions and ways of improvement regarding teacher education and the TET in Korea.
