  • According to the national space program in Korea, is satellites will be launch into space up to 2015. Especially, KARI is going to develope of its own a high resolution camera of less than 1m to be mounted on next Multipurpose Satellite. When performing testing of large spacecraft or hardware that will be launched into orbit, it is necessary to conduct a testing with space-simulated environment. To achieve this requirement, thermal vacuum chamber is generally used. KARI has been developed a very Large Thermal Vacuum Chamber(LTVC) from 2003 to accomodate future space program, such as KOMPSAT, COMS, and Launch vehicles. This new facility will be used to qualify the first self developed High Resolution Camera, which will be loaded on KOMPSAT-3. To perform an optical test for space camera, it is necessary to provide vibration free environment. Thus the vibration responses on the optical table due to external vibration should be minimized by using a special isolation system. In this paper, we propose the concept design of vibration isolation system for the development of the high resolution camera.

  • To estimate presumptive local ground subsidence area near Abandoned Under ground Coal Mine(AUCM) at Samcheok city in Korea, the geological properties of existing ground subsidence area and the geophysical prospecting data were analyzed using GIS. The electrical resistivity survey and seismic reflection survey database were constructed from investigation reports and factors which are related with ground subsidence such as geological map, topological map, land use map, lineament map, groundwater level, RMR (Rock Mass Rating), mining tunnel map and slope database were constructed also to make a comparative study of each parameters. As a result of the spatial analysis of existing ground subsidence area, 9 major factors causing ground subsidence were extracted and a connection between the structure of underground and the ground subsidence was determined from the analysis of geophysical prospecting data. The estimation of presumptive ground subsidence area was performed using the correlation between the result from neural network analysis of 9 factors and the scrutiny of geophysical prospecting data.

  • An approximate analysis is presented for multi-story setback buildings subjected to ground motions. Setback buildings with mass and stiffness discontinuities are common in modern architecture and quite often they are asymmetric in plan. The proposed analysis provides basic dynamic data (frequencies and peak values of base resultant forces) and furthermore an overview of the building response during a ground excitation. The method is based on the concept of the equivalent single story system, which has been introduced by the author in earlier papers for assessing the response of uniform in height buildings. As basic quantities of the dynamic response of elastic setback buildings can be derived by analyzing simple systems, a structural layout of minimum elastic rotational response can be easily constructed. The behavior of such structural configurations, which is basically translational into the elastic phase, is also examined into the post elastic phase when the strength assignment of the various bents is based on a planar static analysis under a set of lateral forces simulating an equivalent 'seismic loading'. It is demonstrated that the almost concurrent yielding of all resisting elements preserves the translational response, attained at the end of the elastic phase, to the post elastic one.

  • The dynamic responses of a rocking wall-moment frame (RWMF) with a post-tensioned cable are investigated. The nonlinear equations of motions are developed, which can be categorized as a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) model. The model is validated through comparison of the rocking response of the rigid rocking wall (RRW) and displacement of the moment frame (MF) against that obtained from Finite Element analysis when subjected ground motion excitation. A comprehensive parametric analysis is carried out to determine the seismic performance factors of the RWMF systems under near-fault trigonometric pulse excitation. The horizontal displacement of the RWMF system is compared with that of MF structures without RRW, revealing the damping effect of the RRW. Frame displacement spectra excited by trigonometric pulses and recorded earthquake ground motions are constructed. The effects of pulse type, mass ratio, frame stiffness, and wall slenderness variations on the displacement spectra are presented. The paper shows that the coupling with a RRW has mixed results on suppressing the maximum displacement response of the frame.

  • The use of energy concepts in seismic analysis and design of structures requires the understanding of the input energy response of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) systems subjected to strong ground motions. For design purposes and non-time consuming analysis, however, it would be beneficial to associate the input energy response of MDOF systems with those of single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems. In this paper, the theoretical formulation of energy input to MDOF systems is developed on the basis that only a particular portion of the total mass distributed among floor levels is effective in the nth-mode response. The input energy response histories of several reinforced concrete frames subjected to a set of eleven horizontal acceleration histories selected from actual recorded events and scaled in time domain are obtained. The contribution of the fundamental mode to the total input energy response of MDOF frames is demonstrated both graphically and numerically. The input energy of the fundamental mode is found to be a good indicator of the total energy input to two-dimensional regular MDOF structures. The numerical results computed by the proposed formulation are verified with relative input energy time histories directly computed from linear time history analysis. Finally, the elastic input energies are compared with those computed from time history analysis of nonlinear MDOF systems.

  • Servohydraulic shaking tables are being increasingly used in the field of earthquake engineering. They play a critical role in the advancement of the research state and remain one of the valuable tools for seismic testing. Recently, the National Earthquake Engineering Research Center, CGS, has acquired a 6.1m x 6.1 m shaking table system which has a six degree-of-freedom testing capability. The maximum specimen mass that can be tested on the shaking table is 60 t. This facility is designed specially for testing a complete civil engineering structures, substructures and structural elements up to collapse or ultimate limit states. It can also be used for qualification testing of industrial equipments. The current paper presents the main findings of the experimental shake-down characterization testing of the CGS shaking table. The test program carried out in this study included random white noise and harmonic tests. These tests were performed along each of the six degrees of freedom, three translations and three rotations. This investigation provides fundamental parameters that are required and essential while elaborating a realistic model of the CGS shaking table. Also presented in this paper, is the numerical model of the shaking table that was established and validated.

  • We investigate physical properties of the nearby (∼ 7.5 pc) astrometric binary μ Cas in the context of standard evolutionary theory. Based on the spectroscopically determined relative abundances ([α/Fe] ≳ +0.4 dex, [Fe/H] ∼ −0.7 dex), all physical inputs such as opacities and equation of state are consistently generated. By combining recent spectroscopic analyses with the astrometric observations from the HIPPARCOS parallaxes and the CHARA array, the evolutionary model grids have been constructed. Through the statistical evaluation of the χ2-minimization among alternative models, we find a reliable evolutionary solution (MA, MB, tage) = (0.74 M, 0.19 M, 11 Gyr) which excellently satisfies observational constraints. In particular, we find that the helium abundance of μ Cas is comparable with the primordial helium contents (Yp ∼ 0.245). On the basis of the well-defined stellar parameters of the primary star, the internal structure and the p-mode frequencies have been estimated. From our seismic computation, μ Cas is expected to have a first order spacing ∆ν ∼ 169 μHz. The ultimate goal of this study is to describe physical processes inside a low-mass star through a complete modelling from the spectroscopic observation to the evolutionary computation.

  • It follows from the basic principles of mechanics of deformable solids relating to the strength, stability and propagation of elastic waves that the Earth's inner core cannot exist in the form of a spherical structure in the assumed thermobaric conditions and calculation values of physico-mechanical parameters. Pressure level reaches a value that is significantly greater than the theoretical limit of medium strength in the model approximations at the surface of the sphere of the inner core. On the other hand, equilibrium state of the sphere is unstable on the geometric forming at much lower loads under the influence of the "dead" surface loads. In case of the action of "follower" loads, the assumed pressure value on the surface of the sphere is comparable with the value of the critical load of "internal" instability. In these cases, due to the instability of the equilibrium state, propagation of homogeneous deformations becomes uneven in the sphere. Moreover, the elastic waves with actual velocity cannot propagate in such conditions in solid medium. Violation of these fundamental conditions of mechanics required in determining the physical and mechanical properties of the medium should be taken into account in the integrated interpretations of seismic and laboratory (experimental) data. In this case, application of the linear theory of elasticity and elastic waves does not ensure the reliability of results on the structure and composition of the Earth's core despite compliance with the required integral conditions on the mass, moment of inertia and natural oscillations of the Earth.

  • The vibration exciter with the accurate calibration requires a low distortion along a single axis over a wide range of frequency. The fabricated piezoelectric exciter was composed of a base, piezoelectric element(Venitron PZT 5A), electrode and seismic mass. Its performance characteristics is evaluated the Mach-Zehnder optical fiber interferometer. The phase of the optical wave passing through the optical fiber around the piezoelectric element was related the vibrational amplitude with a change of the applied sinusoidal voltage on the piezoelectric element. The dynamic characteristics of vibration exciter can be obtained by measuring the vibrational amplitude with a sinusoidal applied voltage on the piezoelectric element. The sensitivity of the fabricated piezoelectric exciter had a 0.4 nm/V which was uniform up to 20 kHz.
