  • In this lysimeter experiment, temporal changes of water percolation rate, irrigation requirement and ${No}_3$--N leaching were investigated under different cultural practices that were no-till direct seeding on flooded paddy (NTDSF), till direct seeding on flooded paddy (TDSF), and transplanting. The highest water percolation rate of 3,001 l/$m^2$ was measured in NTDSF. Others were 2,551 l/$m^2$ and 2,210 l/$m^2$ in TDSF and transplanting. Water percolation rate in NTDSF and TDSF was increased by 36% and 15% compared to transplanting. Water percolation rates in all cultural practices were increased remarkably from the reproductive growth stage and relatively large amount of water loss through percolation was measured even after the reproductive growth stage. A total irrigation requirement was 3,469 l/$m^2$ in NTDSF and 2,898 l/$m^2$ in TDSF. That was equivalent to 45% and 21 % of increase compared to 2,389 l/$m^2$ in transplanting. The largest ${No}_3$--N leaching through the entire rice growing period was 701 mg/$m^2$ in NTDSF and was followed by 494 mg/$m^2$ in TDSF and 465 mg/$m^2$ in transplanting. The ratios to the total amount of ${No}_3$--N leaching at the vegetative growth stage, reproductive growth stage and ripening stage were 31 %, 41 % and 28% in NTDSF; 21 %, 48% and 31 % in TDSF; and 18%, 48% and 35 % in transplanting.

  • Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) is one of the highest maintained turfgrass but often problematic especially for Kentucky bluegrass fairway. Mesotrione is one of selective herbicide that is firstly registered for corn (Zea mays L.) and provides preemergence and postemergence control of broadleaf and annual grassy weeds. Although mesotrione is effective to eradicate area contaminated by creeping bentgrass, protracted time is required to recover damaged area by rhizome extension of Kentucky bluegrass. Overseeding is typically used to fill bare or damaged areas using appropriate turf species to create a uniform turfgrass surface. The objectives of this study were to evaluate mesotrione and seeding rate effects to recover Kentucky bluegrass contaminated by creeping bentgrass. Six treatments consisted of three mesotrione rates and two Kentucky bluegrass seeding rates. The mesotrione rate were 0, 0.05 and 0.10 m $ml^{-2}$. Two seeding rate of to Kentucky bluegrass 'Midnight' were 15 and 30 g $m^{-2}$. Mesotrione application and Kentucky bluegrass overseeding at the same time is helpful to damage creeping bentgrass but not for establishment of Kentucky bluegrass to refill damaged area. To maximize mesotrione effects, temperature above $20^{\circ}C$ would be recommended based on this study.

  • This study was carried out to determine the effect of seed method and seeding rate on the desirable agronomic characteristics and yield of forage barley(Hordeum vuigare) at paddy field, National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Suwon from October 2001 to May 2003. The experiment was arranged in a spilt plot design with three replications. Main plots consisted of tow seed method; Broadcasting and drilling, Sub-plots consisted of seeding rates; 130. 160, 190 and 220 kg/ha. The results obtained were summarized as fellows ; The resistance of cold, disease and lodging of barley for the seeding method and seed rate were not different. And dry matter percentage of barley for a seeding method of 130 kg/ha at the broadcasting was the lowest of $32.0\%$, and that for the drilling at 130 kg/ha was $32.7\%(P<0.05). Fresh yield of barley for a seeding method of drilling at 130 kg/ha was the highest of 32,073 kg/ha, and that for a seeding method of broadcasting at 130 kg/ha was the lowest of 20,944 kg/ha(P<0.05). Dry matter yield of barley for a seeding method of drilling at 160 and 130 kg/ha were the highest 9,170 and 9,138 kg/ha, and that fur a seeding method of broadcasting at 130 kg/ha was the lowest of 5,710 kg/ha(P<0.05). Based on the results of this experiment, it appears that the seeding method and rate of barley could be enhanced by drilling from 130 to 160 kg/ha, and broadcasting from 190 to 220 kg/ha. respectively.

  • This study was conducted in 2014 in the Gangjin area of Jeonnam province for the purpose of confirming the potential of Kenaf as an alternative feed crop of rice. The weather and soil conditions were favorable and there was no adverse effect on the growth of Kenaf. The amount of seeding was given at 10 kg, 15 kg and 20 kg. As the seeding volume increased, plant height and dry matter yield increased, and stem diameter and number of nodes decreased. The highest growth rate was observed between 75 and 90 days from the date of planting(p<0.05). As the growth progressed, stem rate increased and leaf rate decreased(p<0.05). Increased amount of seeding and growth resulted in decreased CP and TDN and increased ADF and NDF, which resulted in the decreased economic value of Kenaf as a feed crop. The result of increasing the use of organic fertilizer to 20 kg and 30 kg was similar to increasing the amount of seeding. As organic fertilizer usage increased, dry matter yield and growth rate improved(p<0.05).

  • This study was carried out to investigate the change of endosperm substance and seedling growth in rice seedlings for machine transplanting with use of two rice varieties, which Samgangbyeo (Indica${\times}$Japonica) and Dogjinbyeo (Japonica) were sown on May 8 with five levels of seeding density. 1. The total dry matter weight, leaf area, length of the longest root, number and length of new roots were negatively correlated with seeding density, and the plant height had the similar tendency to them from 20 days after sowing(DAS). 2. The rooting ability was negatively correlated with seeding density and decreased from 35 DAS in Dongjinbyeo. 3. The endosperm substance were exhausted at 25 to 30 DAS in Samgangbyeo and at 25 DAS in Dongjinbyeo. 4. The leaf area was more useful than the ratio of plant height to dry matter weight for judging the constitution of seedlings. 5. The reducing sugar contents in the endosperm were the greatest among parts of rice seedlings followed by leaf and root. The contents in leaf, root and endosperm reached maximal at 10 DAS, and varied with plant parts, seedling growth and varieties in different levels of seeding density. 6. The protein contents in leaf and root of rice seedlings became decreased with seedling growth., and were minimal values at 15 DAS. The content in endosperm was decreased soon after seeding, and minimal at 4 DAS with showing some fluctuation of protein content after then.

  • This study was conducted to find out the appropriate rates of mixed-seeding of native woody and herb species. It was carried out in greenhouse from 1994 to 1995. The early days germination individuals were $60no./m^2$ in case of woody species for mixed seeding treatment and the treatments were fertilization, soil surface treatment, seeding amount. The investigation factors are the number of individuals of woody and herb species, biomass, height, number of tillers, etc. The mean individuals of Lespedeza bicolor and Amorpha frutzcosa were investigated $1.14no./m^2$, $0.496no./m^2$ in 1995, and Spiraea prunifolia var. simpliciflora and Alnus hirsuta were withering to death. In 1995, the Individuals of Oenothera odorata, Themeda triandra var. japonica, Cymbopogon tortilis var. goeringii, Miscanthus sinensis, Artemisia princeps var. orientalis, Lespedeza cuneata, and Arundinella hirta were investigated $5.06no./m^2$, $1,072no./m^2$, $0no./m^2$, $412.53no./m^2$, $88.6no./m^2$, $8.9no./m^2$, $57.46no./m^2$, respectively, in case of herb species. The height and biomass of Lespedeza bicolor and Amorpha fruticosa showed very fast growth, and those of Themeda triandra var. japonica, Miscanthus sinensis had a similar tendency. For the changes in woody species, according to the seeding amount, there was no significant relationship between species, but It was highly significant in 1995. In case of the herb species, the relationship between the number of individuals and seeding amount was significant for both 1994 and 1995. The most number of tiller was Miscanthus sinensis(21), and showed Themeda triandra var. japonica, Arundinella hirta in descending order. For the mixed seeding of wood and herb species, the number of individuals, height, biomass, tiller of herb species diminished as the seeding amount of herb species increased. It can be concluded that using Lespedeza bicolor and Amorpha fruticosa for woody species and like Arundinella hirta in herb species will be efficient for revegetation measures. It seems, therefore, that the plants of revegetation methods will be used to Lespedeza bicolor, Amorpha fruticosa and Arundinella hirta, and further study is needed on the seeding amount.

  • This study was conducted to find out the effect of sodding and seeding time and rate of seed mixtures on the establishment of cool-season turfgrasses by evaluating the turf coverage rates for two years. In fall planting, the required establishment period of full coverage($100\%$) was 1.5 months with a rolled turf sodding(Kentucky bluegrass $100\%$, Kentucky bluegrass $80\%$+perennial ryegrass $20\%$). The $100\%$ turf establishment was achieved in 7 months with Perennial ryegrass $100\%$, and 7.5 months by seeding with Kentucky bluegrass $100\%$(KB 100), Kentucky bluegrass $80\%$+perennial ryegrass $20\%$(KB80+PR20), Kentucky bluegrass $70\%$+perennial ryegrass $30\%$(KB70+PR30). In spring planting, the establishment periods far sod with KB 100 or KB80+PR20 were taken one month. However, in the case of seeding, the establishment periods were 3 months, 3.5 months, 3.5 months and 4 months with PR100, KB80+PR20, KB70+PR30, and KB 100, respectively Comparing the turf establishment vigor between fall and spring planting, the vigor was higher In spring planting than in fall planting in both sodding and . seeding. In the case of spring planting, the most proper time for turf establishment was tested on April, May, and June trials. The effect was significant in establishment vigor. The result showed highest on April planting. On May and June trials, establishment vigors were decreased gradually As the mixture rate of PR increased, ryegrass, establishment vigor was decreased with the rates. These results indicated that perennial ryegrass has relatively less tolerant to summer heat than Kentucky bluegrass. Number of shoots in 95 days after seeding was higher in KB100 by 16,600 per $m^2$ than in PR100 by 12,400 per $m^2$, while the lowest number showed in KB50+PR50 by 3,300 per $m^2$. Those in KB80:PR20, KB70:PR30 were 6,700 and 4,900 per $m^2$, respectively. The ratios of tillers according to mixture rates between Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass were KB80:PR20=87:13, KB70:PR30=78:22, and KB50:PR50=48:52. According to results in this study, Ideal seeding time might be spring (April) than in fall (September), and proper mixture rate was $80\%$ of Kentucky bluegrass with $20\%$ of perennial ryegrass.

  • The effects of $CO_2$ enrichment on growth of maize (Zea mays L.) were examined. Parameters analyzed include growth characteristics, yields, photosynthetic rates, evaporation rates and photosynthesis-related characteristics under elevated $CO_2$. The plants were grown in growth chambers with a 12-h photoperiod and a day/night temperature of $28/21^{\circ}C$ at the seedling stage and $30/23^{\circ}C$ from the silking stage. The plants were exposed to two elevated $CO_2$ of 500, 700ppm and ambient levels (350 ppm). Chalok 1 and GCB 70 germinated three days after seeding, and germination rates were faster in the elevated $CO_2$ than the control. Germination rates displayed significant differences among the $CO_2$ treatments. At the seedling stage, leaf area, top dry weight, and photosynthetic rates, and plant height indicated positive relationship with elevated $CO_2$ concentrations. At the $5{\sim}6$ leaf stage, $CO_2$ concentration also indicated positive relationship with plant height, leaf area, top dry weight, and photosynthetic rates. At the silking stage, increased plant height of Chalok 1 was noted in the $CO_2$ treatments compared to the control. No significant differences were noted for GCB 70, in which leaf area decreased but photosynthetic rates increased progressively with $CO_2$ concentration. Stomatal aperture was a little bigger in the elevated $CO_2$ than the control. $CO_2$ concentration was negatively related to stomatal conductance and transpiration rates, resulting in high water use efficiency.
