  • In the secondary refining process for the production of high-grade steel, the proper composition is maintained by alloying elements, and non-metallic inclusions are controlled for high cleanliness. Complex reactions occur simultaneously between the molten steel, slag, inclusions, refractories, and alloying elements during the secondary refining process. Previous works have reported simulation models based on kinetics to predict the compositional changes in molten steel, slag, and inclusions in actual processes. Analytical reviews are required for the models to predict the process accurately. In this study, we reviewed and analyzed simulation models based on the coupled reaction model for the secondary refining process.

  • Molten steel level information of ladle is very important for process control in steelmaking process. At secondary refining process, measuring lance and snokel have to keep constant thier depth from molten steel surfaces. But, there is much slag on the molten steel surface. Besides, not only the thickness of slag is varied with refining condition, but also molten steel level is largely affected by firebrick errosion. Then, optical measuring method and/or by human eyes cannot detect true molten steel surface, but slag surface. This slag thickness is 300mm at maximum, then huge diameter eddy current sensor will be needed if that type sensor is applied. In addition to, cooling system is necessary because the molten steel and slag temperature is high. This is not practically. To solve this problem, immersion type levelmeter is developed. This sensor is made up from primary and secondary cylindrical coils. High frequency current is applied to primary coil. Electro-motive force from secondary coil is measured, which is varied with molten steel level. This complete set is installed within stainless steel long capsule and attached to top of lance. This sensor is immersed into molten steel bath of ladle or tundish with protection of expendable paper sleeve.

  • Lead is one of the common non-ferrous metals used in modern industry. The usage of lead continues to increase and has risen from 5 million tonnes per year worldwide in the 1970s to 11 million tonnes in the 2010s. In principle lead is virtually 100 % recyclable as an element without loss of quality. The recycling of lead scrap reduces the energy consumption and environmental burden, comparing to the primary metal production. Therefore production of secondary lead from scrap has been steadily growing and at present it meets approximately 60 % of usage worldwide. Lead scrap (mainly lead-acid battery) is smelted in primary and secondary smelter. Most secondary lead smelting were performed in a shaft-type furnace (blast furnace), rotary furnace and reverberatory furnace. The lead bullion is either cast into ingots and re-melted in refining kettles or refining is performed on the hot lead bullion immediately after production. This work provides an overview of the primary lead production and recycling process.

  • The suitability of pivalic acid was confirmed as a secondary temperature standard material. Triple-point cells of pivalic acid were obtained by using combined process of vacuum distillation with zone refining. A detailed description of the purification process was given. The melting curves were used as criteria for determination of purities of pivalic acid. Triple points of these cells with purity of 99.9997% were measured to be $35.956\pm 0.003^{\circ}C$ by using the melting plateau curves. Thus the triple point cells of pivalic acid appear to be able to use for the calibration of thermistor thermometers with moderate precision.

  • Copper is one of the first metals utilized by humankind about 11,500 years ago. But copper is not plentiful metallic element in the earth's crust. Copper has a high thermal and electric conductivity and is relatively corrosion resistant. In principle copper is virtually 100 % recyclable as an element without loss of quality. The recycling of copper scrap reduces the energy consumption and environmental burden, comparing to the primary metal production. Currently, approximately 30% of the global copper supply provides by recycling. Copper scrap is smelted in primary and secondary smelter. Type of furnace and process steps depend on the quality and grade of scrap. Depending on copper content of the secondary raw material, refining is required, which is usually done through electrorefining. This work provides an overview of the primary copper production and recycling process.

  • Silicon is the most abundant metal element in the Earth's crust. Metallurgical-grade silicon (MG-Si) is an important metal that has wide industrial applications, such as a deoxidizer in the steelmaking industry, alloying elements in the aluminum industry, the preparation of organosilanes, and the production of electronic-grade silicon, which is used in the electronics industry as well as solar cells. MG-Si is produced industrially by the reduction smelting of silicon dioxide with carbon in the form of coal, coke, or wood chips in electric arc furnaces. MG-Si is purified by chemical treatments, such as the Siemens process. Most single-crystal silicon is produced using the Czochralski method. These smelting and refining methods will be helpful for the development of new recycling processes using secondary silicon resources.

  • This study analyzed surface-chemical transitions in manufacturing process of traditional acupuncture as proposed method by Dongeuibogam. The manufacturing process of traditional acupuncture from a used iron for a long time was divided by primary medicinal herbs treatment, secondary medicinal herbs treatment and tertiary treatment using by dog meat. The traditional acupuncture research process was measured according to the characteristics and changes of the specimens at each processing step of the manufacturing process. The following devices were used to Surface analysis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS), X-ray diffraction analyzer (XRD). As a result, medicinal herbs removed impurities on the surface and raised the antibacterial effect in the manufacturing process of traditional acupuncture. Furthermore, the ingredients of medicinal herbs were coated on the surface of the iron. Dog meat influenced to prevent surface corrosion, reduce friction when the acupuncture was inserted. Although the process empirically obtained, a glimpse of the wisdom of our ancestors was revealed. These ancestral wisdom can be expected to apply today, when used in manufacturing process of a modern stainless steel acupuncture to compensate for the defective part.

  • Aluminum is the most abundant metal and the second most plentiful metallic element in the earth's crust, after silicon. Aluminum is a light, conductive, and corrosion resistant metal with strong affinity for oxygen. However, the primary aluminum production process is highly energy intensive. The recycling of aluminum scrap reduces the energy consumption and environmental burden, comparing to the primary metal production. However, the amount of the recovered metal from scrap is limited because of the difficulties to remove the impurities in the scrap. This work provides an overview of the aluminum production and recycling process, from the preparation of alumina to the scrap upgrading and the melting process.

However, the amount of recovered metal from scrap is limited because of the difficulties to remove the impurities in the scrap. • This study is aimed to study combustion characteristics of low $NO_X$ burner using petroleum cokes as fuel. The petroleum coke, which is produced through the oil refining process, is an attractive fuel in terms of its high heating value and relatively low price. But petroleum coke is a challenging fuel because of its low volatile content, high sulfur and nitrogen content, which give rise to undesirable emission characteristics and low ignitability. The petroleum cokes burner is operated at fuel rich condition, and overfire air are supplied to achieve fuel lean condition. The low $NO_X$ burner is designed to control fuel and air mixing to achieve air staged combustion, in addition secondary and tertiary air are supplied through swirler. Air distribution ratio of triple staged air are optimized experimentally. The result showed that $NO_X$ concentration is lowest when overfire air is used, and the burner function at a fuel rich condition.
