  • A new analytical derivation of the elastodynamic point load solutions for an isotropic multi-layered half-space is presented by means of the precise integration method (PIM) and the approach of dual vector. The time-harmonic external load is prescribed either on the external boundary or in the interior of the solid medium. Starting with the axisymmetric governing motion equations in a cylindrical coordinate system, a second order ordinary differential matrix equation can be gained by making use of the Hankel integral transform. Employing the technique of dual vector, the second order ordinary differential matrix equation can be simplified into a first-order one. The approach of PIM is implemented to obtain the solutions of the ordinary differential matrix equation in the Hankel integral transform domain. The PIM is a highly accurate algorithm to solve sets of first-order ordinary differential equations and any desired accuracy of the dynamic point load solutions can be achieved. The numerical simulation is based on algebraic matrix operation. As a result, the computational effort is reduced to a great extent and the computation is unconditionally stable. Selected numerical trials are given to validate the accuracy and applicability of the proposed approach. More examples are discussed to portray the dependence of the load-displacement response on the isotropic parameters of the multi-layered media, the depth of external load and the frequency of excitation.

  • By using the generalized Riccati transformation and the inequality technique, we establish some new oscillation criterion for the second-order nonlinear delay dynamic equations $$(a(t)(x^{\Delta}(t))^{\gamma})^{\Delta}+q(t)f(x({\tau}(t)))=0$$ on a time scale $\mathbb{T}$, here ${\gamma}{\geq}1$ is the ratio of two positive odd integers with $a$ and $q$ real-valued positive right-dense continuous functions defined on $\mathbb{T}$. Our results not only extend and improve some known results, but also unify the oscillation of the second-order nonlinear delay differential equation and the second-order nonlinear delay difference equation.

  • The nonlinear aerodynamic instability of a tensioned plane orthotropic membrane structure is theoretically investigated in this paper. The interaction governing equation of wind-structure coupling is established by the Von $K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n's$ large amplitude theory and the D'Alembert's principle. The aerodynamic force is determined by the potential flow theory of fluid mechanics and the thin airfoil theory of aerodynamics. Then the interaction governing equation is transformed into a second order nonlinear differential equation with constant coefficients by the Bubnov-Galerkin method. The critical wind velocity is obtained by judging the stability of the second order nonlinear differential equation. From the analysis of examples, we can conclude that it's of great significance to consider the orthotropy and geometrical nonlinearity to prevent the aerodynamic instability of plane membrane structures; we should comprehensively consider the effects of various factors on the design of plane membrane structures; and the formula of critical wind velocity obtained in this paper provides a more accurate theoretical solution for the aerodynamic stability of the plane membrane structures than the previous studies.

  • We study a maximum principle for a uniformly elliptic second order differential operator in nondivergence form. We allow a bounded positive zeroth order coefficient in a certain type of unbounded domains. The results extend a result by J. Busca in a sense of domains, and we present a simple proof based on local maximum principle by Gilbarg and Trudinger with iterations.

  • Some annulus oscillation criteria are established for the second order damped elliptic differential equation $$\sum\limits_{i,j=1}^N D_i[a_{ij}(x)D_jy]+\sum\limits_{i=1}^Nb_i(x)D_iy+C(x,y)=0$$ under quite general assumption that they are based on the information only on a sequence of annuluses of $\Omega(r_0)$ rather than on the whole exterior domain $\Omega(r_0)$. Our results are extensions of those due to Kong for ordinary differential equations. In particular, the results obtained here can be applied to the extreme case such as ${\int}_{\Omega(r0)}c(x)dx=-\infty$.

  • Let f(z) be an entire function. Then the order $\rho(f)$ of f is defined by $$ \rho(f) = \overline{lim}_r\to\infty \frac{log r}{log^+ T(r,f)} = \overline{lim}_r\to\infty \frac{log r}{log^+ log^+ M(r,f)}, $$ where T(r,f) is the Nevanlinna characteristic of f (see [4]), $M(r,f) = max_{$\mid$z$\mid$=r} $\mid$f(z)$\mid$$ and $log^+ t = max(log t, 0)$.

  • We give sufficient conditions that the homogeneous differential equations : for $t{\geq}t_0$(> 0), $$x^{{\prime}{\prime}}(t)+q(t)x^{\prime}(t)+p(t)x(t)=0,\\x^{{\prime}{\prime}}(t)+q(t)x^{\prime}(t)+F(t,x({\phi}(t)))=0$$, are oscillatory where $0{\leq}{\phi}(t)$, 0 < ${\phi}^{\prime}(t)$, $\lim_{t\to{\infty}}{\phi}(t)={\infty}$. and $F(t,u){\cdot}sgn$ $u{\leq}p(t)|u|$. We obtain comparison theorems.

  • This study investigates axisymmetric fractional vibration of an isotropic hyperelastic semi-linear thin disc with a view to examine effects of finite deformation associated with the material of the disc and effects of fractional vibration associated with the motion of the disc. The generalized three-dimensional equation of motion is reduced to an equivalent time fraction one-dimensional vibration equation. Using the method of variable separable, the resulting equation is further decomposed into second-order ordinary differential equation in spatial variable and fractional differential equation in temporal variable. The obtained solution of the fractional vibration problem under consideration is described by product of one-parameter Mittag-Leffler and Bessel functions in temporal and spatial variables respectively. The obtained solution reduces to the solution of the free vibration problem in literature. Finally, and amongst other things, the Cauchy's stress distribution in thin disc under finite deformation exhibits nonlinearity with respect to the displacement fields whereas in infinitesimal deformation hypothesis, these stresses exhibit linear relation with the displacement field.

  • This paper is concerned with integral type boundary value problems of second order singular differential equations with quasi-Laplacian on whole lines. Sufficient conditions to guarantee the existence and non-existence of positive solutions are established. The emphasis is put on the non-linear term $[{\Phi}({\rho}(t)x^{\prime}(t))]^{\prime}$ involved with the nonnegative singular function and the singular nonlinearity term f in differential equations. Two examples are given to illustrate the main results.

  • Lee and Lim (2009) state three characterizations of Loamax, exponential and power function distributions, the proofs of which, are based on the solutions of certain second order non-linear differential equations. For these characterizations, they make the following statement : "Therefore there exists a unique solution of the differential equation that satisfies the given initial conditions". Although the general solution of their first differential equation is easily obtainable, they do not obtain the general solutions of the other two differential equations to ensure their claim via initial conditions. In this very short report, we present the general solutions of these equations and show that the particular solutions satisfying the initial conditions are uniquely determined to be Lomax, exponential and power function distributions respectively.
