This study aims to show how scientifically gifted students think in terms of Thinking Style Inventory based on Sternberg's theory of mental self-government and to examine the relationships between their thinking styles, intelligence and creativity. Two hundred and sixty-six middle school students (169 boys, 97 girls) who enrolled in a gifted education program participated in this study. Results indicated that scientifically gifted students prefer legislative, liberal, judical thinking styles, in comparison to general students, known to be related to creative and critical thinking rather than executive and conventional styles. There was no significant correlation between any of thinking style sub measures and Raven' Matrices and Scientific Aptitude Test, but some correlations were found among the sub measures of thinking style and TTCT. Whereas liberal students gained high originality scores, conventional students gained low fluency scores. Also, judical thinking style showed significant correlations with originality and flexibility TTCT sub scores. In sum, this study showed the characteristics of thinking styles of scientifically gifted students and provided implications for gifted education based on the findings presented.
The purpose of this study is to develop learning materials and teaching model for the gifted, and to examine the improvement of creativity of them in middle schools. Subjects were 126 gifted students, who were the 7th or 8th graders and have been taught in gifted classes of the adjacent Education Institute for the gifted of Boryeong Education Districts, Chungnam Province Office Of Education. Divisions of gifted Classes were logical reasoning, mathematics, foreign language, science. After the instruction of project-based task, gifted students had improved creativity. Especially, instruction using project-based task was more effective on scientifically gifted students. Most gifted students were satisfied with the instruction using project-based task, and attractive in it. Finally, it was suggested that the instruction using project-based task should be actively used for the gifted students.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of SSC(Small-Scale Chemistry) lab program applying to scientifically gifted students' classes. The participants were 15 the middle school scientifically gifted students selected and enrolled in science-gifted education center of university. SSC lab program was applied for 3 month with 5 topics. The research design was one group pretest-posttest design, the data were analyzed using the PASW 18 statistics program. The results of this study were as follows: First, the scientific attitude of scientifically gifted students was improved significantly(p<.01) after applying SSC lab program. Especially, there were significant difference between pre-test and post-test in the scores of cooperativity, spontaneity, perseverance, which were the sub-region of scientific attitude. Second, the creative personality characteristics of scientifically gifted students showed statistically significant improvements(p<.01) after applying SSC lab program. Especially, there was significant difference between pre-test and post-test in the scores of adhesion, which was a sub-region of the creative personality characteristics. Third, there were no significant differences in the science inquiry skills between before and after applying the SSC lab program in the scientifically gifted students' classes(p>.05). The results suggest that SSC Lab program is an effective program in scientifically gifted students' classes.

In this study, literatures concerning the scientifically gifted/talented were identified through exploration of ERIC(Education Research Information Center) and then categorized. Existing educational programs for the scientifically gifted/talented were analyzed to aid in development and progress of education program of the scientifically gifted/talented. The followings are the results of this study 1. Exploration of ERIC from 1981 to 1997 showed 150 documents related to the scientifically gifted/talented and of those found there were 63 scientifically gifted/talented education program documents which accounts for 42.0%. 2. 42.0% of documents related to the scientifically gifted/talented and 65.1% of education program for the scientifically gifted/talented were in the publication type of journal articles. 3. 60.0% of documents related to the scientifically gifted/talented and 68.3% of education program for the scientifically gifted/talented were in the type of paper of reports. 4. 71.4% of education programs for the gifted/talented was centered around scientifically gifted/talented students in middle or high school. 5. 52.4% of education programs for the scientifically gifted/talented was being carried out as an supplementary enrichment education program such as summer programs or short term projects. Education programs for the scientifically gifted/talented carried out as a regular class accounted for 38.1%. 6. Systems like Mentorship System and Internship System is being well carried out due to good interrelationships between universities and institutions. There were many programs encouraging majors and careers in science related fields. 7. Individualized education, which is effective in teaching the scientifically gifted/talented whose abilities, interests, and attitudes differ, is being well carried out.

The purpose of this study was to investigate research trends in the area of science education for the gifted through the analysis of articles published from 1999 to 2009. The articles were analyzed by subjects, topics and study method. In the analysis according to year, we discovered that the number of articles has increased since 2005. Most research subjects were middle school students. Other research subjects included elementary and high school students. The first topic that was researched in general was the characteristics of the scientifically gifted. The second topic was the curriculum and program of science education for the gifted. It was also found that the method most employed was surveys, followed by experimental study.
The Purpose of this study is to investigate the general trends of research on gifted education in Korea, by analyzing the articles published during the last thirty years. A total of 347 articles from 14 academic journals which are registered were yearly and synthetically analyzed. The articles were examined in terms of their topics, domains, and age and grade. The most widely researched topic was the cognitive characteristics of the gifted followed by curriculum and affective characteristics of the gifted. Studies on scientifically, generally and mathematically gifted students occupied 86% of total researches. Researches utilized elementary students as their subjects more than middle school or high school students. There is a lack of research on the problems that the gifted students face and on the assessment of gifted education institutes. Moreover, there is hardly any longitudinal study.
Korean 7th national curriculum gave the right to elect the advanced subject such as physics II, chemistry II. Students could elect the subject by their aptitude and interest. But, actually, the choice was constrained by school circumstances such as the number of teacher and the number of class. high school students. We investigated the demand about school science and perception about scientifically specialized high school in which the students could have all advanced science subjects by the survey of 336 middle school students including 148 students in the science education center for the gifted, 220 high school students, and 70 science teachers in capital region. As results of this study, most of the high school opened chemistry and biology advanced subjects, but only 37.1% of them opend physics advanced subject. This constrained students' right of elect the subject by their interest. While most of middle school and high school students normally demanded the more experiment in the class and the easier science content, the students in the science education center for the gifted demanded more science class time. The students who wanted to have science career had very positive recognition of scientifically specialized high school and science teachers agreed to running the scientifically specialized high school.
This study examined the thinking styles of scientifically gifted students on the basis of Sternberg's theory of mental self-government, and the relationship between thinking styles and self-regulated learning ability of the students and their scientific inquiry ability by the different types of thinking styles. 110 middle school students who belonging to the university science-gifted education center participated in this study. 13 thinking styles were postulated that fall along 5 dimensions which are functions, forms, levels, scopes and leanings of the mental self-government. Scientifically gifted students responded to the Thinking Style Inventory (TSI) that standardized Korean version, Self-regulated Ability Inventory and Test of Science Inquiry Skills Inventory (TSIS). The results indicated that scientifically gifted students prefer legislative, liberal, external, hierarchical and judical thinking styles, rather than conservative style. This result also showed that subscales of thinking styles were significantly correlated with self-regulated learning ability and scientific inquiry ability. The legislative style, hierarchical style, local style and liberal style were significant predictors of self-regulation learning ability. The legislative style was significant predictor, whereas oligarchic style was negative predictor of scientific inquiry ability. The results of k-means clustering analysis and MANOVA showed that the self-regulated learning ability and scientific inquiry ability were significantly correlated with the pattern and level of thinking style.
Scientifically gifted students' argumentation characteristics in science instruction using the internet messenger was investigated. Participants in this study were five 9th grader in middle school in Seoul. They attended a program offered by the Science-Gifted Education Center, Seoul National University. Internet messenger (instant messenger) was used for instruction, and data were collected by saved messages. Toulmin's argument model was used as a tool for analyzing students' argumentation, and the argumentation patterns were categorized by sequence of argument operations. The results showed that in case of learner-centered instructions, there were lots of relatively higher-level argumentations appeared. On the contrary, teacher-centered instruction ended up with few or lower-level argumentation. Also there were four types of argumentation patterns emerged throughout the whole instructions. Findings suggest that the development of an instruction models and the selection of an appropriate topic be necessary for promoting the interaction between teacher and students as well as enhancing the students' ability of argument.
