  • Purpose: This study was done to apply a PBL module for students' practice in maternity nursing. Method: Two PBL module scenarios were made for clinical cases in antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum nursing care. A total of 70 senior nursing students of S university were enrolled in this module for their scheduled 3 weeks of practice. A structured questionnaire and subjective statements were collected for evaluation. Result: The students' perceptions of PBL were found to be effective in encouraging motivation and interest in studying, absorbing practical knowledge better, and learning through interaction with tutors. They became more confident, active, and positive throughout the PBL experiences while a lack of time for learning was a limitation. Conclusion: PBL is considered a method that can strengthen nursing students' abilities to adjust to clinical situations in maternity areas. It is recommended to expand PBL in nursing practice courses and develop various scenarios and qualified tutors.

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify the preferences for learning style and the degree of self-directed learning and influencing factors on it among nursing students working on a Bachelor of Science in a nursing program at Suwon. Methods: The study sample included 156 nursing students. A self-report questionnaire was used to assess the data. The data was analyzed using the SPSS/WIN program for descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: Most of the students preferred lectures rather than discussion or team projects as a teaching method. Students preferred deliberating, sensing, and the use of visuals for their learning style. In addition, they favored sequential learning over comprehensive learning. Self directed learning had better outcomes in 3rd and 4th year students than 1st or 2nd year students. Additionally, active learners and high achievers who had a good GPA showed higher self directed learning than the others. Conclusion: In order to maximize students' self-directed learning, study guidance will be necessary for freshmen and for some who experience difficulties in studying nursing courses. Nursing faculty members should pay close attention to facilitate student's self directed learning, and encourage more discussions in the classes.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the level of importance, difficulty, satisfaction, and needs of biological nursing science courses-pathophysiology and pharmacology- among students of Advanced Practice Nursing Programs. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study using a self-report questionnaire has been adopted. Participants in this survey were 436 graduate students enrolled in an Advanced Practice Nursing Program. Using SPSS WIN 18.0 program, descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and t-test were conducted. Results: In a pathophysiology course, the students taught by nurse lecturers presented a higher level of importance and satisfaction than those were taught by non-nurse lecturers, but the difference was not significant statistically. In a pharmacology course, the students were taught by nurse lecturers expressed a higher level of satisfaction than those were taught by non-nurse lecturers, but the difference was not significant statistically. The students wanted to improve the quality of courses. Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, we should try to improve the quality of classes and to increase the number of courses taught by nurse-lecturers.

  • Purpose: Sexuality is a fundamental element of human life and is closely related to mental health. This study was conducted to understand domestic research trends on gender, mental health, and psychological well-being through an integrated review. Methods: Through four domestic databases, 15 papers were finally selected using the search terms 'sex', 'mental health', and 'psychological well-being'. Results: Fifteen papers have been published since 2000 and 10 documents have been published since 2010. A majority of the studies were basic research and reviews, and these included four qualitative studies. Depending on the subject, we classified five articles into three themes by the developmental stages (youth, married women, and the elderly), eight sexual minority studies, and two other studies (right to sexual self-determination, and dating for people with disabilities). Conclusion: A more open social concern and approach to sex, the most basic human need, is warranted. The field of nursing practice requires more attention.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review the curriculum on biological nursing: structure and function of the human body, clinical microbiology, pathophysiology, and function and effect of drugs. Methods: Data was collected by searching and reviewing internet websites of 102 nursing schools or universities which provide 4 years nursing education in the Republic of Korea. The 74 curriculum on biological nursing science were available and analyzed by title, credits, hours, types of major (core or selective), offering semester, and laboratory practice. Results: The titles of 4 courses were diverse and were offered as core major (core requisites) or selective major. Structure and function of human body was offered in priority with more credits. Laboratory practice was poorly established in most courses. Biological nursing science courses were mostly taught in the second semester of the first year and the first or second semester of second year nursing education courses. Conclusion: There is a need to standardize the curriculum on biological nursing science and to expand the use of titles proposed by academic society. Also further research is necessary to identify curriculum details and to reflect the needs of professors.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify the characteristics of doctoral dissertations in nursing science submitted since 2000. Method: Three-hundred and five dissertations of six schools of nursing published from 2000 to 2006 in Korea were analyzed with the categories of philosophy, method, body of knowledge, research design, and nursing domain, Result: In philosophy, 82% of all dissertations were identified as scientific realism, 15% were relativism, and 3% were practicism. Two-hundred and fifty dissertations (82%) were divided into a quantitative methodology and 55 dissertations (18%) were qualitative methodology. Specifically, 45% were experimental, 23% methodological, 13% survey and 17% qualitative designed researches. Prescriptive knowledge was created in 47% of dissertations, explanatory knowledge in 29%, and descriptive knowledge in 24%. Over 50% of all research was studied with a community-based population. In the nursing domain, dissertations of the practice domain were highest (48.2%). Conclusion: Dissertations since 2000 were markedly different from the characteristics of the previous studies (1982-1999) in the increase of situation-related, prescriptive and community-based population studies. A picture of current nursing science identified in this study may provide a future guideline for the doctoral education for nursing.

There were positive relationships among all three variables, transformational leadership, nursing competency and organizational commitment. There was a mediating effect of nursing competency between transformational leadership and organizational commitment. Conclusion. The results of the study indicate that strategies which could enhance the nursing competency of nurses should be developed by mangers in hospitals. Further study is needed on other factors which may influence nurses' nursing competency and organizational commitment especially in hospitals.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to propose and test a predictive model that could explain and predict nursing productivity. Methods: A survey using a structured questionnaire was conducted with 360 nurses in Korea. The data were analyzed using SPSS Windows 18.0 and AMOS 19.0 program. Results: Based on the constructed model, burnout and organizational commitment were found to have direct effects on nurses' turnover intention and nursing productivity. While nursing work environment was found to have indirect effects on nurses' turnover intention and nursing productivity. Conclusion: This structural equational model is a comprehensive theoretical model that explains the related factors and their relationship with nursing productivity. Comprehensive organizational interventions to improve nursing productivity should focus on improving the nursing work environment. Findings from this study can be used to design appropriate strategies to decrease nurse turnover in Korea. Further studies are needed to prospectively verify these causal relationships with larger samples.
