Present work was conducted to investigate the combined effects of gamma-radiation and chemical treatment on the inhibition of sprouting and decay of potato tubers. Irish Cobbler, Apollo and Shimabara potato tubers were immersed in 1000, 2000 and 3000 ppm solution of salicylic acid for 2 minutes, and then irradiated at doses of 5, 10, and 15 krad using an indoor gamma room of approximately 10,000 Ci of $^{60}Co$. Treated tubers were stored for 8 months at room temperature. The results of this work are summarized as follows: 1. Moisture content of irradiated potato tubers was changed less than the control, and decreased gradually along with an extended storage period. Ascorbic acid content was remarkably decreased by gamma-radiation and an extended storage period. 2. Reducing sugar content of irradiated potato tubers tended to increase greatly compared with unirradiated potato tubers, however, starch content of irradiated potato tubers decreased compared with the control. Reducing sugar and starch content of all groups also decreased gradually along with an extended storage period. 3. The storageability of Irish Cobbler variety was best among three varieties and Shimabara variety was worst among them when gamma-radiation is treated singly or in combination with the chemical. Sprouting of potato tubers was more suppressed in combination treatment than single treatment. 4. Decay of potato tubers was more reduced in combination treatment than single treatment. Chemical treatment or gamma-radiation followed by chemical treatment had no influence on decay or spronting of potato tubers. 5. Weight loss of potato tubers was considerably increased as storage period became extended. Shrinkage was, more serious in Shimabara than in rish Cobbler.

A study was conducted to determine the effects of pig slurry application on forage yield and growth of fazing Hanwoo heifer in a mixed pasture. To each of three treatments 1.4ha were alloted a control applied with only chemical fertilizer (N-P-K=150-150-120kg/ha), two pig slurry lots applied with the amount to allow 100% (150 kg/ha) or 150% (225 kg/ha) of N used in the control. A randomized block design was used without replication. Cattle were allowed to graze continuously during the experimental period. Results obtained were as follows: Total dry matter yield was 16,291, 15,632 and 16,320 kg/ha for chemical fertilizer. pig slurry 100% and 150%, respectively. The pasture was dominated by perenial ryegrass during the first gazing season, but by orchard grass and perenial ryegrass (60∼70%) and red clover (20∼30%) during the second grazing season. Average gazing rate per ha was 2.75∼2.76 animal units and daily weight gain of grazing cattle was not different among treatments ranging from 0.563 to 0.580 kg. Total weight gain of grazing cattle per ha during the grazing period was 541, 541 abd 555 kg for chemical fertilizer, pig -slurry 100 and 150%, respectively. RBC, WBC, total protein and albumin etc. concentrations in blood were normal in all treatments.
The applicability of photostimulated-luminescence (PSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) for the detection of 12 food materials (potato, onion, garlic, dried pumpkin, black mushroom, black soybean, Cheongkukjang powder, sea mustard, pepper powder, Ramyun soup, corn tea, and green tea powder) irradiated with an electron beam, gamma ray, and X ray at a range of 0.15 to 10 kGy was investigated. For PSL, negative results (less than 700 photon counts (PCs)) were observed from non-irradiated foods while the irradiated foods showed intermediate (879 to 2,414 PCs) and/or positive (19,951 to 65,919,035 PCs) values. In all irradiated samples, the maximum peak of the TL glow curve was observed between 150 and $250^{\circ}C$. Our findings demonstrate the successful application of PSL and TL to determine whether food items were irradiated or not. However, there were no significant differences among the radiation sources.
Studies on suspected endocrine disrupting pesticide (EDP) residues in agricultural products were carried out in 2016 in Busan, Korea. Twelve different EDPs, ranging in concentration between 0.003-2.049 mg/kg, were detected in 19.5% of 462 samples. About 0.2% of agricultural product samples exceeded the maximum residue limits (MRLs). Risk indices of all of the EDPs were less than 10% of the acceptable daily intake (ADI). The outcomes indicated that the risk groups at highest risk of exposure to diazinon (found in Korean cabbages) and carbendazim (found in apples) were females aged 40 to 49 and young males less than 10 years old, respectively. Based on the stochastic assessment at $95^{th}$ percentile (P95), risk index in these risk groups accounted for 8.38 and 2.98% of ADIs. The results showed that the occurrence of EDP residues in agricultural products could not be considered a public health problem.
In order to develope a new kind of fermented milk, basic studies on several lactic acid bacteria and yeasts were conducted, 8 kinds of alcohol fermented milk were manufactured and sensory evaluation was undertaken. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Four kinds of lactic acid bacteria were isolated, among which Y-2 strain was strongest in acid productivity and it was elucidated that acid productivity of all strains was stornger in synthetic medium than in milk medium. 2. The pH in milk medium inoculated with Y-2 strain and incubated at $30^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours was dropped from 5.8 to 3.8 and fluctuation in amino nitrogen content was found during incubation. 3. The pH in milk medium inoculated with K. fragilis and incubated at $30^{\circ}C$ for 7 days was dropped from 6.2 to 5.2 and amino nitrogen content was in the range of $0.12{\sim}0.27mg/ml$. Alcohol productivity of K. fragilis was stronger than E-2 and E-4 strain but no difference in alcohol productivity was found between milk medium and synthetic medium. 4. The repression in growth and acid productivity of lactic acid bacteria was recongnized if inoculated after inoculating yeast firstly. 5. Alcohol productivity was increased rapidly at the end of acid production of lactic acid bacteria if lactic acid bacteria if lactic acid bacteria and yeast were inoculated simultaneously. 6. Sensory evaluation showed that the product that alcohol content and acidity were 1% and 0.8% respectively had the best palatability(p<0.01). 7. Chemical composition of final product was similar to that of milk koumiss in ash, protein and moisture content.

As the interest on the air-pollution is gradually rising up at home and abroad, automotiv e and fuel researchers have been working on the exhaust emission reduction from vehicles through a lot of approaches, which consist of new engine design, innovative after-treatment systems, using clean (eco-friendly alternative) fuels and fuel quality improvement. This research has brought forward three main issues : evaporative, performance, air pollution. In addition, researcher studied the environment problems of the bio-ethanol, bio-butanol, bio-ETBE (Ethyl Tertiary Butyl Ether), MTBE (Methyl Tert iary Butyl Ether) fuel contained in the fuel as octane number improver. The researchers have many dat a about the health effects of ingestion of octane number improver. However, the data support the con clusion that octane number improver is a potential human carcinogen at high doses. Based on the bio-fuel and octane number improver types (bio-ethanol, bio-butanol, bio-ETBE, MTBE), this paper dis cussed the influence of gasoline fuel properties on the evaporative emission characteristics. Also, this p aper assessed the acceleration and power performance of gasoline vehicle for the bio-fuel property. As a result of the experiment, it was found that all the test fuels meet the domestic exhaust gas standards, and as a result of measurement of the vapor pressure of the test fuels, the bio - ethanol : 15 kPa and the biobutanol : 1.6 kPa. thus when manufacturing E3 fuel, Increasing the biobutanol content reduces evaporation gas and vapor pressure. In addition, Similar accelerating and powering performance was shown for the type of biofuel and when bio-butanol and bio-ethanol were compared accelerated perf ormance was improved by about 3.9% and vehicle power by 0.8%.

This study was conducted to analyze the antioxidant activity and xanthine oxidase inhibitory effect of hot-water extracts from Elaeagnus multiflora Thunb. to provide fundamental data for the development of functional materials. The antioxidative activities of hot-water extracts from E. multiflora Thunb. were analyzed by electron donating ability (EDA) using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) -like activity by pyrogallol and nitrite scavenging ability. EDA of extracts from unripe, ripe, and overripe fruits were 77.7%, 36.0%, and 23.7% at 100 ${\mu}g/mL$, respectively, and EDA of extract in unripe fruits was higher than those of others. At 1,000 $\mu$g/mL, the SOD-like activities were 32.8%, 11.2% and 5.0% for unripe, ripe, and overripe fruits, respectively. The SOD-like activity was increased along with the increase of unripe and ripe extract concentrations. The nitrite scavenging ability of unripe fruit extracts in 100, 300, 500 ${\mu}g/mL$ of extraction solution in pH 1.2 and 3.0 was higher than those of others. The nitrate scavenging ability of all extracts was decreased according to the increase of pH. Xanthine oxidase inhibitory activities of unripe, ripe and overripe fruits were 30.0%, 28.2%, and 18.2% at 1,000 ${\mu}g/mL$, respectively.
Allele information from the analysis of the 13 microsatellite (MS) markers, were classified into the $F_0$, $F_1$ and $F_2$ generations, and probabilities of the same individual emergency in each generation was calculated. As a result, the 13 MS markers showed an estimate of $3.84{\times}10^{-23}$ on the premise of the randomly mated group of $F_2$, which implies that the same individuals may emerge by the use of 37 kinds of SNP markers. In this study, the experimental pigs were intercross between only 2 breeds (Korean native pig and Landrace). In addition, the success rate of paternity tests was analyzed on the whole group, by the use of the 13 MS markers and 37 SNP markers. As regards the exclusionary power of the second parent ($PE_{pu}$), MS markers and SNP markers showed 0.97897 and 0.99149, respectively. In relation to the parent exclusion power of both parent (PE), MS markers and SNP markers showed 0.99916 and 0.99949, respectively. In the case of the estimate to identify parental candidates that had the highest probability ($PNE_{pp}$), the two showed 1.00000 all. The Korean pig industry tends to mass produce hogs with limited numbers of alleles in limited parents. Such being the case, there is a need to organize a marker, for which it is imperative to find markers with high efficiency and high economic feasibility of the characteristics of DNA markers, sample size, the accuracy and expenses of genotyping cost, the manageability of data and the compatibility among analysis systems.
This study was carried out to investigate changes in physicochemical and sensory properties of cooked sausages replaced sodium chloride (NaCl) to potassium chloride (KCl) or magnesium chloride ($MgCl_2$) during storage for 30 days under $4^{\circ}C$. All sausages were prepared with different combination of salts as follow; CTL (1.5% NaCl), KCL (0.9% NaCl+0.6% KCl), MCL (0.9% NaCl+0.6% $MgCl_2$), KML (0.9% NaCl+0.3% KCl+0.3% $MgCl_2$) and PST (1.5% PanSalt). Among sausages moisture content in KML was the highest (p<0.05). Lightness and redness in CTL were lower than those of other treatments, but MCL and KML containing $MgCl_2$ showed higher CIE $L^*$ and $a^*$ values than CTL. The pH in CTL was the highest during storage, however, no significant difference was determined between two treatments, MCL and KML (p>0.05). Crude fat content and water holding capacity (WHC), hardness and cohesiveness of MCL sausages were higher than those of CTL. In sensory characteristics of cooked sausages, saltness in MCL was the lowest during 10 and 20 days of storage (p<0.05). Yellowness in PST was lower than other treatmeants. Gumminess and chewiness of texture property of sausages from MCL and KML were higher than CTL. The results indicate that the replacement of NaCl by KCl improved texture, but meat color was not improved as expected. In contrast, the replacement of NaCl by $MgCl_2$ enhanced color, texture and WHC, whereas partial replacement of NaCl by $MgCl_2$ must reduce bitter taste as compared to sausages manufactured with a NaCl only. Therefore, $MgCl_2$ may be a salt replacing NaCl in cooked pork sausages.
Heteropappus arenarius Kitam., an autumn-flowering biennial belonging to wild chrysanthemums, is found to be native in southeastern coastal area and Jeju island of Korea. It could play a good role for ground cover plants on a large-scale landscape area, especially, barren soil or sloping hillside. This study was initiated to screen optimum germination temperature influenced by local strain and harvesting stage of H. arenarius. The following was the response of seed germination between local strain and temperature. The average of final germination percentage (FG) was the highest in 'Guryongpo' (89.7%) among four local strains, followed by 'Gujwa' (87.3%), 'Gampo' (87.3%), and 'HKNU-I' (71.5%). The average of $T_{50}$ was shorter in 'Gujwa' (3.6 d) and 'Guryongpo' (4.0 d) than the others. The average of FG and $T_{50}$ was the highest as 76.2% and shortest as 3.6 d in $20^{\circ}C$, respectively, followed by $30^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, and $15^{\circ}C$. In case of 'Gujwa', however, FG and T50 was higher in $20^{\circ}C$ and shorter in $15^{\circ}C$ than others. In the relationship between harvesting stage and temperature, the average of FG was greatly higher in Stage III (90.7%) and Stage IV (88.6%) than the others including Stage II (35.7%) and Stage I (26.0%). The average of $T_{50}$ was shorter in Stage IV (3.7 d) and Stage III (4.3 d) than the others, which showed less than 50% of FG. Nevertheless, the available range of seed harvesting stage was from Stage I to Stage IV because H. arenarius seeds could germinate at all stages. In conclusion, it was recommended that the optimum temperature and harvesting stage was $20^{\circ}C$ and Stage $III{\sim}IV$, respectively, for seed germination of H. arenarius.
