그물코쥐치, Rudarius ercodes의 생식주기 (Reproductive Cycle of Small Filefish, Rudarius ercodes)

  • 1982년 9월부터 1983년 8월까지 일본국 정강현 빈명군 빈명호입구 연안에서 채집된 그물코쥐치, Rudarius ercodes를 대상으로 생식생태를 파악하기 위하여 연간 생식소숙도지수(GSI)와 간숙도지수(HSI)의 변화를 조사하였고 이들 생식소발달과정을 광학 및 전자현미경적 방법에 의해 조사하였다. GSI는 일장이 길어지며 수온이 상승하는 3월부터 상승하기 시작하여 6월에서 8월까지 년중 최대값을 나타내고, 9월부터 하강하여 11월부터 이듬해 2월까지 변화없이 연중 최저값을 나타냈다. GSI의 연간변화는 수컷의 경우 뚜렷하지 못하고 암컷의 경우는 GSI와 역상관 관계를 가지고 변하고 있다. 즉 생식소가 발달하는 하계에는 HSI값이 떨어지고, 생식소가 퇴화되는 동계에는 HSI값이 최대로 높아진다. 난소는 많은 난소소낭으로 구성된 1쌍의 낭상형 구조를 이루고 있고, 이들 난소소낭 상피에서 난원세포가 분열증식되고 있다. 초기 난모세포는 세포질이 호염기성이고 핵막을 따라 여러 개의 분산인을 가진다. 완숙 난모세포는 $300{mu}$ 내외로 핵이 동물극으로 이동되면서 핵막이 소실되고, 원형질구성이 극히 한정되며, 대부분의 세포질은 난황과 유구에 의해 충만된다. 배란후 난소소낭에 잔존하는 여포성장중인 난모세포들은 퇴화흡수되나, 아직 여포가 형성되지 못한 초기 주변인기 난모세포들은 퇴화되지 않고 이듬해 난소활성과 함께 성장되어 간다. 난모세포가 성숙되고 난황 축적이 활발해지면서 mitochondria와 과립성소포체가 급격히 증가하는데 이들은 난모세포의 성숙과 난황 축적에 기능적으로 관계가 있는 것 같다. 성숙난모세포의 미세융모의 홈에 뻗은 여포돌기 선단에 난황전구물질로 생각되는 $5{\sim}6$ 층의 원반상고전자밀도 구조물이 나타나고 있다. 정소는 좌우 1 쌍의 엽상구조를 가지며 후방에서 합일되어 저정낭을 이룬다. 정소의 피질층은 정자형성이 일어나는 정소소낭으로 구성되어 있고 수질층은 이들 소낭과 연결된 여러 갈래의 수정관이 분포한다. 성장중인 정소의 간질에는 소관상 cristae가 발달된 대형 mitochondria와 다수의 소포체를 가진 steroid 계 hormone 생성분필세포가 존재한다. 정자의 두부는 핵중앙에 깊이 함입된 중심강이 있어 U 자형을 이루고 첨체는 극히 빈약하다. 중편의 mitochondria는 커다란 구형의 부핵을 형성하고 있으며, 미부의 axoneme을 이루는 미세소관은 9+9+2형을 나타낸다. 생식연주기는 3월부터 7월에 걸친 성장기 5월부터 9월까지의 성숙기, 5월중순부터 10월 초순까지의 산란기, 그리고 10월부터 이듬해 2월까지의 휴식기 등 연속적인 주기로 구분할 수 있었고 산란성기는 6월부터 8월까지였다.

암 환자의 혈장 Transforming Growth Factor-$\beta$1 농도 (Plasma Transforming Growth Factor-$\beta$1 Levels of Cancer Patients)

  • 한국인의 대표적인 성인 고형 종양인 위암, 간암, 유방암과 소아 백혈병 및 2종의 소아 고형 종양 환자로부터 혈장 transforming growth factor-$\beta$1 (TGF-$\beta$1) 농도를 sandwich ELISA 분석법을 이용해 측정함으로써 TGF-$\beta$1을 이 질환들에 대한 새로운 종양표지자 (tumor marker)로 사용할 수 있는지 검토하였다. 토한 연령 및 성별에 따른 혈장 TGF-$\beta$1 농도의 정상치를 조사하였다. 신생아에서 70대까지 혈장 TGF-$\beta$1 농도의 차이는 없었고 남녀간의 차이도 없었다. 위암 환자의 혈장 TGF-$\beta$1 농도는 16.0$\pm$6.8 ng/ml (평균$\pm$표준편차)로 정상 대조군의 TGF-$\beta$1 농도 (8.3$\pm$5.0 ng/ml) 보다 유의하게 높았으나 간암, 유방암 환자의 혈장 TGF-$\beta$1 농도는 대조군과 차이가 없었다. 그리고 위암 환자 16명 ,간암 환자 8명, 유방암 환자 7명 중 각각 7명 (43.7%), 1명 (12.5%), 1명 (14.3%)에서만 혈장 TGF-$\beta$1 농도가 증가되었다. 5명의 소아 백혈병 환자에서는 관해 (remission)여부와 상관없이 혈장TGF-$\beta$1농도가 모두 정상 범위에 있었으나 2명의 소아 고형암 환자에서는 종양 절제 전에는 혈장 TGF-$\beta$1농도가 높았다가 절제 후 정상으로 떨어졌다. 결론적으로 1)정상인의 혈장 TGF-$\beta$1 농도는 연령 및 성별에 따른 차이가 없다는 것을 알 수 있었고, 2)성인 고형암인 위암, 간암, 유방암에서는 낮은 민감도로 인해 TGF-$\beta$1을 진단을 위한 선별 검사로 이용하기에는 부적절한 것으로 판단되었으며, 3)정상 대조군보다 혈장 TGF-$\beta$1 농도가 높았던 위 암 환자와 종양 절제 전후로 혈장 TGF-$\beta$1 농도가 민감하게 변했던 소아 고형암 환자에 대 해서는 향후 표본 수를 늘려 부가적인 연구를 해야 할 것으로 사료된다.

설비공학 분야의 최근 연구 동향 : 2013년 학회지 논문에 대한 종합적 고찰 (Recent Progress in Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Research : A Review of Papers Published in the Korean Journal of Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering in 2013)

  • This article reviews the papers published in the Korean Journal of Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering during 2013. It is intended to understand the status of current research in the areas of heating, cooling, ventilation, sanitation, and indoor environments of buildings and plant facilities. Conclusions are as follows. (1) The research works on the thermal and fluid engineering have been reviewed as groups of fluid machinery, pipes and relative parts including orifices, dampers and ducts, fuel cells and power plants, cooling and air-conditioning, heat and mass transfer, two phase flow, and the flow around buildings and structures. Research issues dealing with home appliances, flows around buildings, nuclear power plant, and manufacturing processes are newly added in thermal and fluid engineering research area. (2) Research works on heat transfer area have been reviewed in the categories of heat transfer characteristics, pool boiling and condensing heat transfer and industrial heat exchangers. Researches on heat transfer characteristics included the results for general analytical model for desiccant wheels, the effects of water absorption on the thermal conductivity of insulation materials, thermal properties of Octadecane/xGnP shape-stabilized phase change materials and $CO_2$ and $CO_2$-Hydrate mixture, effect of ground source heat pump system, the heat flux meter location for the performance test of a refrigerator vacuum insulation panel, a parallel flow evaporator for a heat pump dryer, the condensation risk assessment of vacuum multi-layer glass and triple glass, optimization of a forced convection type PCM refrigeration module, surface temperature sensor using fluorescent nanoporous thin film. In the area of pool boiling and condensing heat transfer, researches on ammonia inside horizontal smooth small tube, R1234yf on various enhanced surfaces, HFC32/HFC152a on a plain surface, spray cooling up to critical heat flux on a low-fin enhanced surface were actively carried out. In the area of industrial heat exchangers, researches on a fin tube type adsorber, the mass-transfer kinetics of a fin-tube-type adsorption bed, fin-and-tube heat exchangers having sine wave fins and oval tubes, louvered fin heat exchanger were performed. (3) In the field of refrigeration, studies are categorized into three groups namely refrigeration cycle, refrigerant and modeling and control. In the category of refrigeration cycle, studies were focused on the enhancement or optimization of experimental or commercial systems including a R410a VRF(Various Refrigerant Flow) heat pump, a R134a 2-stage screw heat pump and a R134a double-heat source automotive air-conditioner system. In the category of refrigerant, studies were carried out for the application of alternative refrigerants or refrigeration technologies including $CO_2$ water heaters, a R1234yf automotive air-conditioner, a R436b water cooler and a thermoelectric refrigerator. In the category of modeling and control, theoretical and experimental studies were carried out to predict the performance of various thermal and control systems including the long-term energy analysis of a geo-thermal heat pump system coupled to cast-in-place energy piles, the dynamic simulation of a water heater-coupled hybrid heat pump and the numerical simulation of an integral optimum regulating controller for a system heat pump. (4) In building mechanical system research fields, twenty one studies were conducted to achieve effective design of the mechanical systems, and also to maximize the energy efficiency of buildings. The topics of the studies included heating and cooling, HVAC system, ventilation, and renewable energies in the buildings. Proposed designs, performance tests using numerical methods and experiments provide useful information and key data which can improve the energy efficiency of the buildings. (5) The field of architectural environment is mostly focused on indoor environment and building energy. The main researches of indoor environment are related to infiltration, ventilation, leak flow and airtightness performance in residential building. The subjects of building energy are worked on energy saving, operation method and optimum operation of building energy systems. The remained studies are related to the special facility such as cleanroom, internet data center and biosafety laboratory. water supply and drain system, defining standard input variables of BIM (Building Information Modeling) for facility management system, estimating capability and providing operation guidelines of subway station as shelter for refuge and evaluation of pollutant emissions from furniture-like products.

  • This article reviews the papers published in the Korean Journal of Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering during 2014. It is intended to understand the status of current research in the areas of heating, cooling, ventilation, sanitation, and indoor environments of buildings and plant facilities. Conclusions are as follows. (1) The research works on the thermal and fluid engineering have been reviewed as groups of heat and mass transfer, cooling and heating, and air-conditioning, the flow inside building rooms, and smoke control on fire. Research issues dealing with duct and pipe were reduced, but flows inside building rooms, and smoke controls were newly added in thermal and fluid engineering research area. (2) Research works on heat transfer area have been reviewed in the categories of heat transfer characteristics, pool boiling and condensing heat transfer and industrial heat exchangers. Researches on heat transfer characteristics included the results for thermal contact resistance measurement of metal interface, a fan coil with an oval-type heat exchanger, fouling characteristics of plate heat exchangers, effect of rib pitch in a two wall divergent channel, semi-empirical analysis in vertical mesoscale tubes, an integrated drying machine, microscale surface wrinkles, brazed plate heat exchangers, numerical analysis in printed circuit heat exchanger. In the area of pool boiling and condensing, non-uniform air flow, PCM applied thermal storage wall system, a new wavy cylindrical shape capsule, and HFC32/HFC152a mixtures on enhanced tubes, were actively studied. In the area of industrial heat exchangers, researches on solar water storage tank, effective design on the inserting part of refrigerator door gasket, impact of different boundary conditions in generating g-function, various construction of SCW type ground heat exchanger and a heat pump for closed cooling water heat recovery were performed. (3) In the field of refrigeration, various studies were carried out in the categories of refrigeration cycle, alternative refrigeration and modelling and controls including energy recoveries from industrial boilers and vehicles, improvement of dehumidification systems, novel defrost systems, fault diagnosis and optimum controls for heat pump systems. It is particularly notable that a substantial number of studies were dedicated for the development of air-conditioning and power recovery systems for electric vehicles in this year. (4) In building mechanical system research fields, seventeen studies were reported for achieving effective design of the mechanical systems, and also for maximizing the energy efficiency of buildings. The topics of the studies included energy performance, HVAC system, ventilation, and renewable energies, piping in the buildings. Proposed designs, performance performance tests using numerical methods and experiments provide useful information and key data which can improve the energy efficiency of the buildings. (5) The field of architectural environment was mostly focused on indoor environment and building energy. The main researches of indoor environment were related to the evaluation of work noise in tunnel construction and the simulation and development of a light-shelf system. The subjects of building energy were worked on the energy saving of office building applied with window blind and phase change material(PCM), a method of existing building energy simulation using energy audit data, the estimation of thermal consumption unit of apartment building and its case studies, dynamic window performance, a writing method of energy consumption report and energy estimation of apartment building using district heating system. The remained studies were related to the improvement of architectural engineering education system for plant engineering industry, estimating cooling and heating degree days for variable base temperature, a prediction method of underground temperature, the comfort control algorithm of car air conditioner, the smoke control performance evaluation of high-rise building, evaluation of thermal energy systems of bio safety laboratory and a development of measuring device of solar heat gain coefficient of fenestration system.

Streptozotocin으로 유발된 당뇨병성 Wistar Rat 정자의 첨체반응 및 수 변화 특성 (Spermatozoa Characteristics of Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Wistar Rat: Acrosome Reaction and Spermatozoa Concentration)

  • 당뇨병은 생식내분비 조직의 구조나 기능 변화를 유발하여 호르몬 합성 및 분비량의 변화를 야기하고, 정자의 운동성 등에 영향을 미치는 것으로 알려져 왔다. 그러나 부정소와 수정관내 정자의 농도 변화나 수정능력 획득 및 침체반응에 미치는 영향은 잘 알려져 있지 않다. 본 실험에서는 Wistar 쥐에 streptozotocin을 투여하여 당뇨병을 유발시킨 후 3일과 14일에 부정소 각 부위와 수정관내 정자 농도 변화를 조사하고 부정소 꼬리와 수정관내 정자의 침체반응 유도 실험 (acrosome reaction to ionophore challenge test, ARIC test)을 이용하여 정자의 수정 능력을 평가하였다. Streptozotocin을 주사한 후 혈액내 인슐린 및 포도당 농도는 당뇨병 경과 기간이 길어짐에 따라 반비례 관계를 보였다. 부정소 머리와 몸통내 정자의 농도는 3일군에서부터 감소하기 시작하나 꼬리에서는 14일군 $(15.2{\pm}2.1)$에서 대조군 $(28.1{\pm}4.0)$이나 3일군에 $(24.8{\pm}2.9)$비해 유의하게 감소하였다. 수정관내 절자 농도는 14일군이 $0.025{\pm}0.013$으로 대조군과 $(0.108{\pm}0.03)$ 3일군에 $(0.067{\pm}0.046)$ 비해 유의하게 감소하였으며, 3일군도 대조군에 비해 유의한 차이를 보였다. 자발적 첨체반응율은 대조군의 부정소 꼬리정자는 $37.1{\pm}2.4$이고 수정관내 정자는 $49.3{\pm}2.4$로 두 부위간 유의한 차이를 보였다. 3일군과 14일군의 부정소 꼬리와 수정관내 정자의 자발적 첨체반응율은 대조군에 비해 유의하게 증가하였다. 한편 14일군의 수정관내 정자의 자발적 첨체반응율은 대조군이나 3일군에 비해 유의하게 증가하였다. ARIC test 결과 대조군과 3일군에서는 20%이상 차이를 보였으나 14일군에서는 약 8.4% 차이를 보였다. 위의 결과가 부정소의 성숙 조절기능 이상 또는 정자형성 이상에 기인한 것인지는 더 연구되어야 하나 당뇨병 병력이 길어짐에 따라 정자의 수적인 감소, 자발적 침체반응의 증가나 침체반응의 약화가 유발되어 생식능력의 감소 원인으로 작용하는 것으로 사료된다.

한 대학병원에서 비결핵항산균의 분리 및 동정 실태 (Recovery Rate and Characteristics of Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Isolates in a University Hospital in Korea)

  • 연구배경 : 최근 국내에서도 NTM 분리율 및 감염 빈도가 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 본 연구는 국내 한 삼차의료기관에서 1년 동안 항산균 검사가 의뢰된 호흡기 검체에서 NTM의 배양양상 및 분리비율을 살펴보고 그 임상적 의의에 대해 알아보고자 하였다. 방 법 : 2002년 1년간 서울아산병원에서 미생물검사실로 항산균 검사가 의뢰된 호흡기 검체를 대상으로 도말, 배양 및 동정 결과를 확인하고 그 임상적 의의를 분석하였다. 결 과 : 총 9,821명의 환자에서 26,820건의 항산균검사가 시행되었다. 결핵균이 동정 된 건수와 환자수의 비율은 각각 5.7%, 6.3%였고, 비결핵항산균은 각각 2.2%, 2.8% 이었다. 도말양성, 배양양성 중 결핵균 및 NTM의 비율은 각각 87.8%, 12.2%이었다. NTM 중 오염의 가능성이 높은 암색소성-저집락군은 31.8%(186/584 균주)에서 분리되었다. 암색소성-저집락군을 제외한 NTM 중 MAC, M. fortuitum complex의 분리비율이 42.1%(138/328), 19.5%(64/328)로 가장 높았다. 암색소성-저집락군을 제외한 NTM이 분리된 275명 중 미국 및 영국 흉부학회 진단기준을 만족하는 NTM 폐질환은 각각 8.4%(23명), 17.8%(49명)이었다. 결 론 : 국내 한 대학병원에서의 항산균 검사 결과 NTM의 분리 비율이 높고 일부는 NTM 폐질환의 원인이어서 항산균 도말 및 배양 양성의 경우 국내에서도 반드시 NTM의 가능성을 고려하여야 하겠다.

고정성 보철물과 연관된 합병증과 실패에 관한 조사 (Complication and Failure Analysis of Fixed Restorations)

  • 고정성 보철물의 장기적 예후를 보장하고자 하는 많은 노력에도 불구하고, 아직도 임상에서는 부적절한 제작 및 유지 관리로 인한 다양한 고정성 보철물의 합병증이 관찰되고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 고정성 보철물의 임상적 상태를 조사하여 보철 진료의 임상적 참고 자료와 연구의 기초 자료로 도움이 되고자하였다. 2009년 1월에서 2009년 12월까지 12개월간 부산대학교병원 치과 보철과에 내원한 환자 중 기존의 고정성 보철물을 철거하고 치료를 시행한 환자를 대상으로 고정성 보철물과 지대치에 연관된 임상적 상태를 조사 평가하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1. 전체 고정성 보철물의 추정 수명은 10.0년이었고, 평균 장착 기간은 $10.3{\pm}5.5$년이었다. 2. 악골에 따른 수명의 차이는 없었으나 (P>.05), 전후방 위치에서는 전치부 또는 구치부에 비해 전치부와 구치부를 포함하는 보철물의 수명이 가장 길었다 (P<.05). 3. 고정성 보철물의 재료별 수명은 금속관이 가장 길었고 (P<.05), 다른 재료들 간에는 유의한 차이가 없었다 (P>.05). 4. 고정성 보철물의 크기는 보철물 수명에 영향을 미치지 않았다 (P>.05). 5. 대합치 조건별 고정성 보철물의 수명은 자연치와 고정성 보철물, 가철성 국소 의치, 총의치 순으로 길었다 (P<.05). 6. 고정성 보철물의 생물학적 합병증은 치주 질환 (37.5%), 치아 우식증 (19.0%), 그리고 치수 질환 (10.8%) 순이었고, 기계적 문제점은 변연 결함 (18.4%), 보철물 파절(4.2%), 유지력 상실 (3.9%), 치아 파절 (3.6%), 그리고 식편 압입 (2.6%) 순이었다. 보철물을 철거한 후 치대치의 33.1%는 재수복이 불가능한 상태였다.

크리핑 벤트그라스 훼어웨이에서 관수회수.예지물과 질소시비수준이 엽조직 및 토양 질소함유량에 미치는 효과 (A Three-year Study on the Leaf and Soil Nitrogen Contents Influenced by Irrigation Frequency, Clipping Return or Removal and Nitrogen Rate in a Creeping Bentgrass Fairway)

  • Responses of 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass turf to various fairway cultural practices are not well-established or supported by research results. This study was initiated to evaluate the effects of irrigation frequency, clipping return or removal, and nitrogen rate on leaf and soil nitrogen con-tent in the 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) turf. A 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass turf was established in 1988 on a Sharpsburg silty-clay loam (Typic Argiudoll). The experiment was conducted from 1989 to 1991 under nontraffic conditions. A split-split-plot experimental design was used. Daily or biweekly irrigation, clipping return or removal, and 5, 15, or 25 g N $m-^2$ $yr-^1$ were the main-, sub-, and sub-sub-plot treatments, respectively. Treatments were replicated 3 times in a randomized complete block design. The turf was mowed 4 times weekly at a l3 mm height of cut. Leaf tissue nitrogen content was analyzed twice in 1989 and three times in both 1990 and 1991. Leaf samples were collected from turfgrass plants in the treatment plots, dried immediately at 70˚C for 48 hours, and evaluated for total-N content, using the Kjeldahl method. Concurrently, six soil cores (18mm diam. by 200 mm depth) were collected, air dried, and analyzed for total-N content. Nitrogen analysis on the soil and leaf samples were made in the Soil and Plant Analyical Laboratory, at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, USA. Data were analyzed as a split-split-plot with analysis of variance (ANOVA), using the General Linear Model procedures of the Statistical Analysis System. The nitrogen content of the leaf tissue is variable in creeping bentgrass fairway turf with clip-ping recycles, nitrogen application rate and time after establishment. Leaf tissue nitrogen content increased with clipping return and nitrogen rate. Plots treated with clipping return had 8% and 5% more nitrogen content in the leaf tissue in 1989 and 1990, respectively, as compared to plots treated with clipping removal. Plots applied with high-N level (25g N $m-^2$ $yr-^1$)had 10%, 17%, and 13% more nitrogen content in leaf tissue in 1989, 1990, and 1991, respectively, when compared with plots applied with low-N level (5g N $m-^2$ $yr-^1$). Overall observations during the study indicated that leaf tissue nitrogen content increased at any nitrogen rate with time after establishment. At the low-N level treatment (5g N $m-^2$ $yr-^1$ ), plots sampled in 1991 had 15% more leaf nitrogen content, as compared to plots sampled in 1989. Similar responses were also found from the high-N level treatment (25g N $m-^2$ $yr-^1$ ).Plots analyzed in 1991 were 18% higher than that of plots analyzed in 1989. No significant treatment effects were observed for soil nitrogen content over the first 3 years after establishment. Strategic management application is necessary for the golf course turf, depending on whether clippings return or not. Different approaches should be addressed to turf fertilization program from a standpoint of clipping recycles. It is recommended that regular analysis of the soil and leaf tissue of golf course turf must be made and fertilization program should be developed through the interpretation of its analytic data result. In golf courses where clippings are recycled, the fertilization program need to be adjusted, being 20% to 30% less nitrogen input over the clipping-removed areas. Hardware Approach to Fuzzy Inference―ASIC and RISC―

  • This talk presents the overview of the author's research and development activities on fuzzy inference hardware. We involved it with two distinct approaches. The first approach is to use application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) technology. The fuzzy inference method is directly implemented in silicon. The second approach, which is in its preliminary stage, is to use more conventional microprocessor architecture. Here, we use a quantitative technique used by designer of reduced instruction set computer (RISC) to modify an architecture of a microprocessor. In the ASIC approach, we implemented the most widely used fuzzy inference mechanism directly on silicon. The mechanism is beaded on a max-min compositional rule of inference, and Mandami's method of fuzzy implication. The two VLSI fuzzy inference chips are designed, fabricated, and fully tested. Both used a full-custom CMOS technology. The second and more claborate chip was designed at the University of North Carolina(U C) in cooperation with MCNC. Both VLSI chips had muliple datapaths for rule digital fuzzy inference chips had multiple datapaths for rule evaluation, and they executed multiple fuzzy if-then rules in parallel. The AT & T chip is the first digital fuzzy inference chip in the world. It ran with a 20 MHz clock cycle and achieved an approximately 80.000 Fuzzy Logical inferences Per Second (FLIPS). It stored and executed 16 fuzzy if-then rules. Since it was designed as a proof of concept prototype chip, it had minimal amount of peripheral logic for system integration. UNC/MCNC chip consists of 688,131 transistors of which 476,160 are used for RAM memory. It ran with a 10 MHz clock cycle. The chip has a 3-staged pipeline and initiates a computation of new inference every 64 cycle. This chip achieved an approximately 160,000 FLIPS. The new architecture have the following important improvements from the AT & T chip: Programmable rule set memory (RAM). On-chip fuzzification operation by a table lookup method. On-chip defuzzification operation by a centroid method. Reconfigurable architecture for processing two rule formats. RAM/datapath redundancy for higher yield It can store and execute 51 if-then rule of the following format: IF A and B and C and D Then Do E, and Then Do F. With this format, the chip takes four inputs and produces two outputs. By software reconfiguration, it can store and execute 102 if-then rules of the following simpler format using the same datapath: IF A and B Then Do E. With this format the chip takes two inputs and produces one outputs. We have built two VME-bus board systems based on this chip for Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The board is now installed in a robot at ORNL. Researchers uses this board for experiment in autonomous robot navigation. The Fuzzy Logic system board places the Fuzzy chip into a VMEbus environment. High level C language functions hide the operational details of the board from the applications programme . The programmer treats rule memories and fuzzification function memories as local structures passed as parameters to the C functions. ASIC fuzzy inference hardware is extremely fast, but they are limited in generality. Many aspects of the design are limited or fixed. We have proposed to designing a are limited or fixed. We have proposed to designing a fuzzy information processor as an application specific processor using a quantitative approach. The quantitative approach was developed by RISC designers. In effect, we are interested in evaluating the effectiveness of a specialized RISC processor for fuzzy information processing. As the first step, we measured the possible speed-up of a fuzzy inference program based on if-then rules by an introduction of specialized instructions, i.e., min and max instructions. The minimum and maximum operations are heavily used in fuzzy logic applications as fuzzy intersection and union. We performed measurements using a MIPS R3000 as a base micropro essor. The initial result is encouraging. We can achieve as high as a 2.5 increase in inference speed if the R3000 had min and max instructions. Also, they are useful for speeding up other fuzzy operations such as bounded product and bounded sum. The embedded processor's main task is to control some device or process. It usually runs a single or a embedded processer to create an embedded processor for fuzzy control is very effective. Table I shows the measured speed of the inference by a MIPS R3000 microprocessor, a fictitious MIPS R3000 microprocessor with min and max instructions, and a UNC/MCNC ASIC fuzzy inference chip. The software that used on microprocessors is a simulator of the ASIC chip. The first row is the computation time in seconds of 6000 inferences using 51 rules where each fuzzy set is represented by an array of 64 elements. The second row is the time required to perform a single inference. The last row is the fuzzy logical inferences per second (FLIPS) measured for ach device. There is a large gap in run time between the ASIC and software approaches even if we resort to a specialized fuzzy microprocessor. As for design time and cost, these two approaches represent two extremes. An ASIC approach is extremely expensive. It is, therefore, an important research topic to design a specialized computing architecture for fuzzy applications that falls between these two extremes both in run time and design time/cost.   • This study was conducted to identify the effects of caffeine on the lipid and protein components or blood chemistry levels of the serum as well as the total homogenate, mitochondrial and microsomal fraction of the rat(Sprague-Dawley, female) liver. Acute test were conducted to determine those effects. The acute test was conducted by dividing rats into 7 groups according to the time lapsed after a single oral administration of 100mg/kg caffeine(that is control, 2hrs, 4hrs, 8hrs, 24hrs, 48hrs and 72hrs lapsed group). The concentrations of glucose, urea nitrogen, uric acid, creatinine, total protein, albumin, A/G ratio, triglyceride, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, free fatty acid, phospholipid as well as the activities of alanine aminotransferase(ALT), aspartate aminotransferase(AST) and alkaline phosphatase(ALP) were measured in the serum of each experimental groups. The concentrations of the carbonyl group, malondialdehyde(MDA) and the patterns of the SDS-PAGE(Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate-Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis) were analyzed to determine the oxidative damages and metabolic changes on the lipid and protein components in the serum, and total homogenate, mitochondrial and microsomal fractions of the rat liver. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows; 1. The concentrations of serum glucose were significantly higher(p<0.01) between 4(143.0mg/dl) and 8hrs(138.0mg/dl) in comparison to that of the control(101.1mg/dl) after a single oral administration of caffeine(100mg/kg). While on the other, there were no significant differences in the concentrations of urea nitrogen, uric acid, creatinine, total protein, albumin and albumin/globulin(A/G) ratio in comparison to those of the control. 2. The concentrations of total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol in serum were significantly higher(p<0.01) between 4(77.4mg/dl, total cholesterol) and 8hrs(64.7mg/dl, HDL-cholesterol) in comparison to those of the control(62.8, 46.7mg/dl) after a single oral administration of caffeine(100mg/kg). On the other hand, the concentrations of triglyceride in serum were significantly lower(p<0.01) after 8hrs(38.8mg/dl) in comparison to that of the control(66.5mg/dl). 3. The activities of AST in serum was significantly higher(p<0.05) from 2hrs(149U/L) to 8hrs(178U/L) in comparison to the control(112U/L) after a single oral administration of caffeine(100mg/kg). The activities of ALT in serum were significantly higher(p<0.01) at 4(45.5U/L), 24(49.3U/L), 48(46.8U/L) and 72 hrs(42.3U/L) in comparison to that of the control(39.7U/L) after a single oral administration of caffeine(100mg/kg). On the other hand, there were no significant differences in the activities of ALP in comparison to that of the control. 4. The concentrations of free fatty acid in serum were significantly higher(p<0.01) at 8hrs(65.0mg/dl) in comparison to that of the control(37.6mg/dl) after a single oral administration of caffeine(100mg/kg). However, there were no significant differences in the concentrations of carbonyl group and malondialdehyde within serum, and liver homogenate, mitochondrial and microsomal fractions in comparison to that of the control. 5. The patterns of SDS-PAGE in serum, mitochondrial and microsomal fraction of the liver showed no significant differences.
